Occasional freezes & crashes
Hi everybody. Been playing Gothic 3 about 17 hours by now. I´m using the 1.73 community patch because the newer one gave me bad shadow problems and for some reason fps was much lower than on 1.73. Real issue is occasional freezes (mostly when I load a game) and crashes after playing awhile. Yesterday I finally got an error message, can someone look at this and maybe tell what is going on in the background and maybe find a solution? Should I increase the amount of virtual memory or something like that? Oh and my computer specs are:
Athlon x2 +4400
3gb ram
Ati HD 4650 1gb DDR3
Win7 32 bit
Cheers

Hmh, it could be. Now I have given admin rights and compatibility mode is on XP SP3. Let´s put it to the test.. Thanx for the tip, why didn´t I try that before.
Edit: Tested and no help there.. Got an "Where´s guru" message once again.. Any other ideas? I have increased the amount of virtual memory already. Could it be my HD 4650?

Maybe it's simply an out of memory issue.
I don't have experience with Win 7, so I'm not sure if there still is a boot.ini file that could be edited to inlcude the following line:
bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 2990
After editing, you'll have to reboot your PC.
If this addition causes trouble (BSOD, in the worst case), change it to
bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 2890
and try again.
-----------
All in all, it could help if you set the texture quality from "high" to "medium".

I´m thinking also that the reason is some kind of out of memory issue. Had few crashes and noticed that memory usage was almost 100%. I lowered the resource cache from the detail settings from optimal to high and that have helped a lot.
For some reason game is much smoother, even the stuttering is almost gone and I had only one crash after 3 hours of playing (this happened when I loaded a save). That was without "Where is guru" message, it was pure Gnome..exe stopped working. Before, the game was crashing from 2 min to 1 hour. I will try your tip also, thanx for that. Such a great game and I feel bad for picking it up in such a low price.
edit: Forgot to say that I googled earlier today and found out some old fix from 2006. Back then the ge3.ini included command line "ResourceCache.u32SpeedTreeMaxMemUsage_High=100000" which was bugged and caused memory leaks. It seems that community patch has taken away that command line and newer ge3.ini doesn´t seem to have specific commands lines for optimal setting. I thought to change the resource cache from optimal to high so memory usage would maybe stop in some point. So far so good...

Be careful with boot.ini in Win7. It's heavily guarded and I still haven't figured out how to edit that by hand.
And I'm not sure if the bcdedit part exists in msconfig.exe or not.

Just a small update.. Well the changes I made didn´t work that much. Few evenings I played without crash, but then it started again. In 5 minutes 2 Wheres guru crashes, when I was exploring new places so I decided to try your tip. I used 2890 value for starters and now the game gets little hangups, but doesn´t crash. Before, those hangups were there times when game crashed. Game feels stable now so thank you for your tip. I hope this time this small problem is solved! *fingers crossed*

No.
Well, I don't actually know about yours, but I've played Gothic 3 on a HD 4650 in the past pretty flawlessly.
And small hang ups are normal in Gothic 3, even completely patched up. After all it's a streaming world on an engine which is not so great and your RAM or HDD might not always be able to keep up.
