G1: In Extremo Lyrics?
I haven't the foggiest if this has been discussed to the death already:
Currently I'm playing Gothic1 again and marvel at the performance of «In Extremo» in chapter two.
However, for the love of God, I'm unable to work out what the heck they are singing about. I can't even recognize the language! Is it some sort of "Middle High German" or somesuch or is it a contemporary language such as Swedish [wild guess]? Or is it gobbledegook completely made up for the game?
-
It is called "Herr Manelig" and is a Scandinavian fary tale in an ancient language - translated:
Once in the early morning before sun rise
Before the dawn chorus sounded
The mountain troll woman proposed to a knight
She spoke with a forked tongue
Knight Mannelig, Knight Mannelig
Please marry me
For I can give you everything
Your answer can only be "yes" or "no"
If you want it that way
I will give you twelve fine mares
Which are grazing in the shady grove
They have never felt a saddle
Never a bridle
I will give you twelve mills
Situated between Tillö and Ternö
The mill stones have the finest red gleam
And the wheels are made of silver
I will give you a golden sword
Which sounds with 15 gold rings
And in battles fights as you wish
On the battle field you will be victorious
I will give you a shirt, so new
The most beautiful that you have every seen
Not sewn with needle and thread
Crocheted from the finest white silk
Gifts such as these I would love to accept
If you were a Christian woman
But you are an evil mountain troll woman
From the species of the water trolls and the devil
The mountain troll ran out through the door
She walled and wept loudly
If I had got the handsome man
I would be freed from my pain
Knight Mannelig, Knight Mannelig
Please marry me
For I can give you everything
Your answer can only be "yes" or "no
If you want it that way
-
Thanks, Sowilo, that was a great help - and surprisingly swift, too.
What "ancient language" is it exactly? Do you know?
-
Well, since German, Dutch, English, Dannish, Swedish, Icelandish and Norweggian all came from the same language, my guess is that it's a language (or dialect) that was spoken before it swedish, dannish and norweggian split into different languages.
-
I heard that it is old-Swedish.
-
 Zitat von Sowilo
I heard that it is old-Swedish.
Hah, that fills my heart with joy. It shows I'm not a lost cause when it comes to languages.
Is it some sort of "Middle High German" or somesuch or is it a contemporary language such as Swedish [wild guess]?
I always thought I suck at this because I am one of those people who can't understand a thing in operas even if the opera in question is supposedly performed in your native language.

Really? Swedish? I'd like to hear that, I'm from Sweden! The names dont sound swedish though ...
-
Even if you have the English version, surely there is some way to activate the "In Extremo" song.
I know it was left out for copyright reasons, but it is still there. Somewhere hidden deep inside the bowels of the programming codes.
-
My guess is that you'll need to know the script name and how to activate it.
Inserting the band itself doesn't help much. (though it's fun to see them play with no music)
Normally they appear after you kill the minecrawler queen.
You walk into the old camp and grim comes running up to you saying that "In Extremo has arived!" then he goes to the other fans and joins them.
Really? Swedish? I'd like to hear that, I'm from Sweden! The names dont sound swedish though ...
That's because it'll be at least 100 years old, and possibly as old as 800 years.
The languages back then looked way different.
Also, the english version posted isn't the exact translation. :P
It's accually quite simple if you know a bit swedish, danish, norweggian, english, german, dutch... though the latter isn't really used at all.
"Early in the morning, before the sun rose.
Before the birds sang."
Etc. I can't be arsed to translate it entirely.

Guide: "Activate" In Extremo (G1)
 Zitat von Sowilo
Introduction
Quotation of Whailor:
OK, I managed to find it finally. To make "In Extremo" work in international release, need to:
1) On stage: insert all band members.
InExtremo_DrPymonte
InExtremo_TheFlail
InExtremo_ThomasTheForger
InExtremo_Unicorn
InExtremo_YellowPfeiffer
InExtremo_Lutter
InExtremo_Flex
2) Off the stage: insert other people.
Charlotte
IEFan1
IEFan2
IEFan3
IEFan4
3) And last: insert announcer (MUST be last!)
IE_397_Announcer
In general the concert starts right after you enter the announcer, may have to rest for a night to get all the people moving.
There was also a trigger, I forgot it but it's written on paper at home, can check later. I didn't need the trigger, at least the concert started as soon as I entered the announcer. Charlotte, the girl, did not dance right away, but when I slept and came back, she was dancing. Grim, one of the diggers, told me that "In Extremo is here, come over and watch it" or something to that extent, but I forgot to check whether Grim will say so anyway after I enter these NPC's, or whether I need to activate the trigger. I did activate the trigger anyway, just in case, even when the concert started.

Bittida en morgon innan solen upprann
Innan foglarna började sjunga
Bergatroliet friade till fager ungersven
Hon hade en falskeliger tunga
:Herr Mannelig herr Mannelig trolofven i mig
Ej heller betsel uti munnen
Eder vill jag gifva de qvarnarna tolf
Som stã mellan Tillö och Ternö
Stenarna de äro af rödaste gull
Och hjulen silfverbeslagna
Eder vill jag gifva förgyllande svärd
Som klingar utaf femton guldringar
Och strida huru I strida vill
Stridplatsen skolen i väl vinna

are you kidding me? No way thats 800 years old, I understand every word, it's pure swedish, it is nearly the same spelling as the one we have today.. 100 seems plausable, but the old swedish poetry I read from 300 years ago is even harder to understand. Anyway i can hardly see any likenesses to dutch/german/norwegian/danish, possible the two last ones but its more like modern swedish
-
Well, I could post some old dutch and the current dutch version of it and you'll see how much it has changed.
And I merely suggested that it *could* be 800 years old for all I know.
I showed the text to a couple of swedish guys I know and they could hardly read it at all.
Ok, here's the poem from roughly 1200-1300 writen by Hadewijch:
Ghi alle die avontuere;
- Si dixero, non satis est - (latin)
Wilt Doghen om minnen natuere.
That was the original, now for the current version, though it still uses some words that have more modern versions:
If there are any dutch people reading this, then they should understand the latter, though they might not understand the former, even though it's the same language.

how could they not understand this? maybe your swedish friends aren't very intellectual and bright -.- just to illustrate how very similar it is to todays swedish:
*Bittida en morgon innan solen upprann*
Bittida(?) en morgon innan solen gick upp
*Innan foglarna började sjunga
Innan fåglarna började sjunga
*Bergatroliet friade till fager ungersven
Bergstrollet friade till fagra ungersven
*Hon hade en falskeliger tunga
Hon hade en falsk tunga
*Herr Mannelig herr Mannelig trolofven i mig
Herr Manneligg Herr mannelig trolovad i mig
thats it.. ok some sentences should have other word orders to sound better, but if u translate it word after word u see how very similar to modern swedish it is.. anyway what is all this that we are talking about? I havnt played gothic 1 so i have no clue.. would be nice if you could let me in on this one
-

I havnt played gothic 1 so i have no clue..
It is never too late. Use the time until G3 for Gothic 1. You'll love it.
It seems, from January 2006 onwards, a fully localised (text & speech) Gothic 1 is available here. And they ship it to Sweden for € 10,- plus shipping costs (sadly, they take higher charges for Sweden than for Denmark).
Edit: the guys from WoG recommend this retailer. It's good in answering questions via email - especially for overseas customers.

What is the problem? Do you mean the savegame? Put it into savegame-folder.
Please try to explain what the problem is.

He is referring to your post from yesterday, Werner.
He is looking for the little detail you neglected to tell us when you posted how we can prompt "In Extremo" to perform in the English version of G1.
On stage: insert all band members.

Are these commands entered via the Marvin console?

Yes they are.
When you are in game, hit B (the hero stats) and type MARVIN, then hit again B. After this you should see in the upper left corner "Marvin-Mode". Then hit [F2] to open the console and type in there the insert command and the desired code.
To deactivate the Marvin Mode, hit B type 42 and hit B again.
If you still have probs, ask
