Greetings and welcome! This is a Dungeon Lords modification created by File Read Error from Game Banshee. This mod is the result of tons of hours of work, and it adds lots of new monsters, allows them to drop a wider variety of items, and generally increases the fun factor of this game by a whole lot. Hope you'll enjoy it.
This mod is for the Collectors Edition (1.5) version of Dungeon Lords only. It will not work on any other version!
Installation:
- Whatever you do, make a backup of your old files! If you fail to do so, you won't be able to go back if something goes wrong (unlikely, but not impossible) or if for some obscure reason you want to remove my mod. To make a backup of old files, just copy them to another folder.
- The files D6MONS.dat, D6TREAS.dat and D6TRLIST.dat are essential, you'll have to copy all three of them into your installation folder of Dungeon Lords, overwriting the already existing ones. These three files contain information about the monsters and the items they can have. If only one or two of these files are installed, the game will not work properly and is very likely to crash at some point.
- The iname.dat, pname.dat and mname.dat files actually are essential too, they contain the names of new items and monsters, so they should also go into the installation folder, overwriting the existing files. If this is not done, new monsters may display no name at all in the game, or maybe even crash the game.
- Optional: the folder "grn_model" contains a few selected animation changes and a fix for the Urgoth Bug where that fat guy cannot climb a certain tower. Additionally it contains replacers for bushes which will simply make the annoying bushes disappear from the game (they were always annoying me). The animation changes have no effect on gameplay, but they enable Human and Elf characters to throw a kick when armed with a light or medium melee weapon. This applies both for player characters and human/elf enemies. The tower fix is also optional but highly recommended because it makes getting ordained favor harder for all characters, essentially adding a real meaning to the term "ordained favor"! And the bush animation changes will remove a lot of annoying plants from the game which were previously impeding player movement and obscuring vision. To install all of these, copy the contents of the "grn_model" folder into the existing "grn_model" folder of the game, overwriting the existing files.
- Optional: the folder "maps" contains a few graphical changes to the automap on the bottom left hand corner. What this does is improving the map's readability. Just copy the contents of this folder into the existing "maps" folder of the game if you want, overwriting the existing files.
- Optional: the folder "sprites" contains changes to plants and similar stuff that is usually obscuring the player's view in the wilderness. These new files are supposed to get rid of the annoying plants, and this has two positive effects: Less graphical load which means the game runs faster, and less obscuring graphics making it easier to actually see the monsters. However, on some occasions this doesn't work right, and the player might still see graphics where the plants were. This can be fixed by either reloading the game or entering an interior. If you want to have this change in the game, copy the contents of the "sprites" folder into the existing "sprites" folder of the game, overwriting the existing files.
Playing:
Simple... just start the game and create a new character. Existing characters of unmodded versions should still work, but it is highly recommended to start a new character and enjoy this mod from the beginning. You will encounter new enemies along the way (most of them only appear in more difficult regions of the game, like Forbidden Lands, Vale of Ruin and such) and bigger groups of enemies in general. Recommended settings: Hard difficulty and More monster spawns! This mod has not been tested on any other settings, so I don't even know if it will work with other settings. The player can also find new weapons and spells - I could not enable the "broken" spells like Fire Mines, Urth's Wrath, Divine Grace or Cloud of Death, but all the working spells should be findable now. This especially applies if the player is fighting Wylvan Renegade, Demonic Bladewitch or Twisted Sylph enemies, they all get a chance to drop rare spells now, with the Twisted Sylphs being able to drop the best spells (even Cataclysm! But it's very rare to get that spell from the Twisted Sylphs). Quite a lot of NPC enemies (Thief Brigands, Drey Elves, Ninjas, Bladewitches etc.) are capable of wielding other weapons now, so it's possible (with a little luck) to find "rare" weapons like Golden Shuriken, Golden Fumata-Yaris, Radiant Swords or War Bows of Fire when killing certain enemies. Even some weapons that were previously unfindable can now be found on enemies, like Bladerelics, Demonblades and the Hammer of Thoronir. Chests can drop a wider variety of items, too. Some high-level chests (namely the ones from Irynthabl maze, but a few others as well) can now produce such weapons as well, and they are also capable of dropping many more different spells.
By the way, using the bargain skill will put the lie to all of the increased difficulty of this mod. If there is any honor in you at all, don't use the bargain skill. This mod is very much possible to play without it. If a player uses the bargain exploit to clone the cataclysm 2000 times, he will be able to kill everything no matter how much harder I try to make the game. Using bargain will simply ruin this mod. You have been warned.
Troubleshooting:
If anything goes wrong, contact me at GameBanshee forums, my account name is "file read error". Actually there should be no more bugs in this mod but two types of bugs might be possible if I screwed something up when making this mod:
- Game crashing with no message, probably in the exact moment when monsters are supposed to appear. This can happen if I made a mistake with their item drops, and if it does, please tell me where it happened so I can try to find out which monster is causing the error.
- A monster that was killed gives a very high amount of experience, way more than it should. This is because of a malfunction of my hex editor, once I had zombie warriors that give 300'000 EXP when killed! Now this is fixed of course, but maybe there are more monsters with the same bug, so if you see a monster giving way more experience than it should do, tell me about it, including the name of the monster!
Actually these bugs should already be fixed, so don't worry too much about them. You should not encounter them when playing the game. But if you do, make sure to tell me about it. The same applies if you find any other bugs. I'll do my best to fix them.
And now, have fun with my mod! :-)
