A crucial thing to consider is why you are starting a clan. Many (often young) people who start a clan do so because they want to experience a sense of power over others, which often results in clans with despotic structures, giving them absolute command over all others. These people often end up getting frustrated because nobody wants to join their clans. People looking for clans are looking for a group of likeminded gamers see the problem? People who like despotic clans are those looking for power, and most of them would rather create their own clan than be dominated by somebody else.
So, you need something that will interest other people. You don't have to be a nice person, or for that matter a nice clan to be succesful. No doubt a Diablo 2 PK Clan doesn't make many friends, but that doesn't mean it can't be succesful it's just a matter of having something in common.
It does pay off to be nice though, and if people online generally like your clan, you'll have an easier time keeping your clan alive.
