    PC Action 01/2000

Elind

    [Bild: kay.png]

    Spoiler:(zum lesen bitte Text markieren)
    Kai Rosenkranz (19), Musiker

    Rebell.at: Wer spricht eigendlich Xardas?

    Drogen sind was schlimmes...

KaiRo: Lass mich kurz nachdenken.

    The Man

    Gothic III Q&A; [ Feature ]

Piranha Byte are hoping its third time lucky for Gothic in the UK and N America...

Author: Derek dela Fuente | Date Added: 26/10/2005

If you read through a list of most wanted games, especially throughout Europe, there is one name constantly appearing. It’s not one of those blockbuster games but one that is a growing brand that has a fanatical fan base, especially in Germany, one that is a sleeper, slow grower, in Europe.

Gothic, RPG, may be on it’s third instalment but there are plenty of surprises in store as Derek dela Fuente found out when he spoke with both Stefan Berger, Brand Manager for Gothic 3, and Kai Rosenkranz, from the development team Piranha Byte’s, who is the in-house composer and sound designer. In addition to his main area of responsibility, he's also in charge of visual effects, 2D graphics and the official website.

Would it be fair to say that in terms of sales and expectations so far Gothic has not fared as well as you’d hoped, particularly outside of Germany? The UK and USA market are ones you wish to crack so how will this be achieved with Gothic 3?

Kai: In contrast to the German market, the Gothic series could admittedly not grow beyond the ‚sleeper hit’ status in the UK/US. When Gothic 2 hit stores in the USA, it was already more than one year old and could hardly compete with visually impressive state-of-the-art-titles. Due to the poor marketing and the significant trouble we had with our distribution partners, only a small group of players knew the game existed at all, whereas in Germany we have a loyal and devoted fan community. They enthusiastically spread the word about the game and thus make up for the little marketing budget. Even though the Gothic series is still not exactly widely known and popular in the US/UK, the international fan community keeps growing. We support this development as much as we can. Gothic compilations such as the ‚Collectors edition’ (which contains all the previous Gothic products) will be available worldwide before the third part's release. Apart from that, the mere product quality will rise considerably and thus enable the game to compete with the international market.

For those not particularly au-fait with Gothic can you bring us up to date with the aspirations and inspirations for the series, along with some of the fundamental changes and new ideas for Gothic 3?

Kai: From the very beginning, it was our goal to establish a unique and fresh game world. We focused on our very own vision rather than rehashing stereotypes and clichées. But still we cannot fully steer clear of indirect influence, particularly from pen-and-paper-RPGs and fantasy movies. For Gothic 3 we tried to maintain the original look-and-feel and at the same time add some innovative features where it makes sense. For those game players who are familiar with the predecessors, the third part will feel like home, but with some fresh and appropriate changes. One of the most significant alterations will be the reinvented combat/skills-system. We have overhauled the original approach and replaced the handful of skills from Gothic 2 with a huge amount of mini-talents. While the game players could do nothing but increase the numerical value of their skill up to 100% back then, they will now be able to form their very own talents by combining their preferred mini-talents.

Please tell us about the Piranha Bytes team, what they have worked on before and what do you feel the team have to bring to the RPG genre?

Stefan: Until yet Piranha Bytes made Gothic 1, Gothic 2 and the Gothic 2 Add On ‚Night of the Raven’. Piranha Bytes was founded in the year 1998. The office of Piranha Bytes is in a small house (not an office… it’s a real one-family-house) in Essen, Germany. With the Gothic series the team is developing a huge game with a believable world. So during the game the NPCs will hear stories from you (do you work together with the Orcs, are you a friend of person xyz…). Then they will decide if they want to work / speak with you or not… So when you kill some guys from the militia you will get problems with them during the whole game (in other RPG games they will forget the happenings). Also they will speak with other characters about you. So when they speak in a good way about you it may help you…

What makes the Gothic world unique and compelling and can you give the backdrop story to the game and how pivotal throughout the game the story is?

Stefan Story: Gothic 1 and 2 played on the island around the city Khorinis. Mankind is at war with the Orcs. On the island around Khorinis there are a lot of ore mines which are needed for the war against the Orcs. Without them victory is impossible. At the end of the 2nd part you see the hero going on the ship back to the mainland. In the intro of Gothic 3 you will see the ship shortly before the arrival on the mainland. You see burning cities and humans which are running away from the Orcs. Then you know: The Orc army has won the war against humankind. Humans are now slaves of the Orcs…

Unique Elements: The unique elements of Gothic 3 are the believable world and the different solutions for the different adventures (freedom during the whole game).

What kind of technology focus does the team have and can you tell us a little about the game’s 3D engine and one feature they are proud of so far?

Stefan: For Gothic 3 we are using a complete new game engine called Genome Engine. We will support all new graphic features but we are focusing NVIDIA graphic chips as they have a lot of opportunities for us. For the trees we will use speed tree. As you can see we are using the newest technique to create the most fascinating RPG world ever. Gothic is well known for the unique graphic setting (Gothic is not just the game title). So in the third part of the game we will have much more possibilities for the characters, animations and buildings. In Gothic 2 a character had around 1.200 polygons. In Gothic 3 a character has 12.000 polygons.

Negative feedback from the fans has centered around the fact that the games interface and controls have been somewhat clunky. So how will this be changed/rectified for Gothic 3?

Stefan: I can promise there will be a lot of changes for the interface and the controls. The interface of Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 focused for a console version. But as we all know we never released a console version of the game. We made a lot of control improvements from the 1st to the 2nd part of the game. For part 3 we will again make the controls much easier. So we will have a drag and drop inventory (inventory was one of the most criticized things from G1 and G2).

How impressed should we be with the game’s AI? Will actions and the way you interact have a real effect on the way people respond and regard you?

Stefan: That is one of the biggest strengths of Gothic: the believable world. Here the AI is very important. In the Gothic series every action has its reaction. Also the people will remember your action during the whole game AND they will tell stories of you to other characters… Short example: When you kill a sheep and a farmer watches you he will tell anyone that you have killed one of the sheep… So no farmer would help you until you clear the situation out with the farmers (pay them money, fulfill a mission for him)… P.S.: If you would kill the farmer after you have killed the sheep no one would know that you killed them… Except another person has seen you…

Another example is the whole story… As the Orcs have won the war against humankind the player can decide on which side he would like to play… Would he like to help the humankind against the Orcs or stay on the side of the Orcs?? Maybe a gamer would like to stay in the middle… When you help the Orcs the humans will not be happy with you… When you help the humans and you kill some Orcs the Orcs will pay bounty for you…

Actions and the way you interact will not be a part of a small mission… It will be part of the full game… and you have to decide which way you want to go…

Tell our readers about some of the creatures/enemy players will confront and the types of quests involved in the game.

Stefan: There will be around 30 different monsters and dozens of human enemies in the game. As you play now on the mainland and not on the island anymore there are newer, bigger enemies like the huge T-Rex - check out these links who will attack you when they can. But there are also peaceful creatures in the world of Gothic 3 like the horn rammers. But be aware: When you attack them they will also attack you… And then you might have huge problems.

What cross over/continuation does the game have from say Gothic 2? Will it have the same characters, what is new and can you import previous characters?

Stefan: Again you play the nameless hero from the first and second parts. Also you will meet some of your friends again. Maybe they will be able to help you on your way… We will see the people from the mainland and the Orcs will also remember you… They heard a lot of stories about the nameless hero… So you are not an unknown person anymore…

Final comments please on the size of the game and anything gamers should know.

Stefan: The world in Gothic 3 will be 3 to 4 times bigger then the world in Gothic 2. We will have around 20 cities in the game… most of them occupied by the Orcs. Gamer has also to fight against around 30 different monsters and dozens of human enemies. Over 50 different powerful spells will help him on his way.

TVG would like to thank for sharing some of the wisdom that has made Gothic a popular brand across Europe; whether or not success is finally recognized in the UK and North America remains to be seen however we’ll have further coverage of the title soon…

Derek dela Fuente

Speed Tree.

Games Convention

World of Gothic посетил GC, чтобы посмотреть и сообщить о текущей версии Gothic 3.

At the highly visible Deep Silver stand of Koch Media and JoWood in Hall 3 beside a lot of other game highlights Gothic 3 has been presented. Piranha Bytes was represented by Kai Rosenkranz and JoWood was on-site with Brand Manager Stefan Berger. In two seperate rooms it was possible to test diverse games for XBox and PC among others Spellforce 2, Pancer Elite Action and of course Gothic 3.

    [Bild: oGAIotZaq01.jpg]
    The Koch Media/JoWooD-stand from outside

Kai commented on the state of the playable version "We have no special version available for the GC - what you are seeing and playing is just the current status or development which we have recorded and took to Leipzig. As a result, the game did not run completly stable. "The game is, at this time, not optimized at all" explained Kai. That's the reason why there were some lags.

    [Bild: 02w.jpg]
    KaiRo is explaining

In the playable version the little village Montera is accessible. The city gate is secured by an ork, in the inner city people are working or following their activities (as already implemented). During the presenation Kairo explained "Montera is one of the first settlements, that was conquered by orcs, consequently" he continued "life goes on quite normally here". The inhabtitants have so to speak adapted to the circumstance that now they are working for the orcs instead of the king. Stone houses and cottages are motley situated, everywhere are boxes and barrels, here and there a NPC is working. One or two orc-guards are watching out that everything keeps running. In the current version the dialogue system has not been implemented yet. As a consequence it hasn't been possible to speak to anyone. Any kind of menu is still missing and it's not possible to fight. Everything you can do is to run through the city which is equipped with some NPC's and to enjoy the graphics. The main character that could be seen in this version is not the hero from the predecessors but any NPC as the hero is not completely disigned yet. By the way the functions to circuit the hero with the camera have been added; consequently it's possible to watch the front and the profile of the character.

    [Bild: Y03.jpg]
    Stefan Berger is operating

Kai also commented on the perks and on the functionality of the skilling system: "In Gothic 2 you have had skills quoted in percentages: 10% one-handed weapons, 50% crossbow and so on. The skilling system in Gothic 3 is so to speak digitised "That means you can carry out a special move - or you can't", he exemplified the new concept and continued "This means, that the single skills are seperated in many little steps that can be leraned seperately."

For example concerning the “one-handed” skill there could be special attacks against orcs or moves against certain monsters. The degree of detail is extremly high. At the wayside in front of Montera's gates there is an Innos-shrine that is modelled much more detailed than in Gothic 2. Stefan Berger also activated the Wireframe-Mode at the computers for the presentation in order to demonstrate how many polygones even the figures consist of. Despite the larger and more detailed areas there won't be any loading times. As already in the predecessors the whole world is loaded into the memory. To realise this process the developpers resort to ressource-saving techniques. Areas in the distance, for example, are displayed more simply. Kai confirmed that the world of Gothic will be four times larger than the accessible parts of the world in gothic 2 and addon together.

    Question:
Will there be any postponements concerning the release?
    KaiRo:
No, we said, that we focus on the first quarter 2006 and this month, it looks like, as we would be able to accomplish our target. At the moment, Gothic 3 won't be postponed.
    Question:
Will there be a city, that is not occupied by orcs?
    KaiRo:
Yes, to find such a city, the player has to go to Vangard, the capital city of the kingdom Myrtana. There are still human beings dominating and resisting against orcs.
    Question:
In Gothic 3, will be used the speedtree-technology. Will there be used something different than "speedgrass" ( Speedgrass has the function, that the polygones of the plants (leaves) are always rotating to the beholder).
    KaiRo:
No Speedtree yes - Speedgrass no.
    Question:
Will there be bater trade or a "valuta"?
    KaiRo:
That's a good question. Probably it will boil down to a kind of "valuta".
    Question:
In Gothic 1 appeared the middle ages-band "In Extremo". Will that be repeated in Gothic 3?
    KaiRo:
There will be an appearance of an middle ages-band, thats planned. But we have no concrete intentions wich band it will be...

Was kannst du uns darüber berichten?

    A: 2009

    ingame.de: Geht es etwas genauer?

    A: Nein (lacht)

A: Könnte durchaus möglich sein.

Musstet Ihr sparen?

A: Ja.

    A: Ja, unter anderem.

Living Games

Living Games 04.06.09

    [Bild: 58202.jpg]
Living Games

    ingame.de: И дешевле.

    Ice Bucket Piranha

    Gothic II Interview
    28 August 2002 00:02 - John [JCal] Callaham

Piranha Bytes fantasy RPG Gothic became a cult success when it was first released thanks in part to its dark setting and solid fantasy gameplay. Now the developer is working on the full-fledged sequel to the game and hopes that players will appreciate the changes they are making to the Gothic universe. HomeLAN got a chance to chat with team members Kai Rosenkranz and Stefan Kalveram to find out more about their plans for Gothic II.

HomeLAN - First, what did you think of the reaction that the original Gothic received from players and reviewers?

Kai Rosenkranz - It was overwhelming. We derived most of the ambition and enthusiasm to create Gothic II from the feeling that people liked our first baby. We still get lots of mail from passionate players, writing just to praise our work. As you can imagine, that’s more valuable than anything else.

Stefan Kalveram - Even though the original Gothic was received very well, we know we can make it better . Much better. And we will make it better.

HomeLAN - What are the team's main goals in creating Gothic II?

Stefan Kalveram - We want to create a game not just for hardcore gamers. Gothic II is a great adventure that tells the story of the Isle of Myrtana.

Kai Rosenkranz - We want to take the world of Gothic to the next level while simultaneously maintaining the Gothic “feel.” Gothic II’s story contains lots of new ideas and innovations, but still forms a plausible sequel to the first game’s plot. The same holds true for the visuals. The new world looks much better due to an improved engine and the addition of an incredible amount of detail. However, Gothic II still radiates the same atmosphere found in Gothic I.

Overall, we added a lot of new features, reworked the AI, and overhauled the interface. In a lot of aspects Gothic II outshines the original game, but it’s still “Gothicish”.

HomeLAN - What can you tell us about the storyline for the sequel?

Stefan Kalveram - The story is set in the mine valley of Khorinis. The glorious days of the once productive mines in this small seaside region are long over. Instead, the mines are now akin to a natural prison that is surrounded by an impenetrable magic barrier where slaves eked out their miserable existence.

However, one brave man has managed to burst the bonds of his imprisonment. Following his own call to freedom, he ventures deep into the subterranean temples, where he is willing to do whatever it takes to banish Evil and destroy the magic barrier forever. He succeeds and the prisoners stream trough their only pass to freedom, spurred by the hatred of men long-suppressed,.

No one in Khorinis had been prepared for this. They had lived too long under the deceptive notion of security granted by the apparently indestructible magical dome. Even Khorinis’ small militia garrison did not have enough men to fight against the onrush of prisoners. After numerous bloody clashes, many civilian captives succeeded to escape and found safety in the woods or rugged mountains of the surrounding countryside.

The steadily escalating number of raids in the town’s vicinity and the bandits' ever-increasing boldness seemed to paralyse Khorinis. Angered by the militia's inability to protect their farms, some of the farmers were unwilling to pay allegiance to the king and instead formed an alliance with the prisoners.

Khorinis is facing an uncertain future. Due to the farmers' decreasing production, more and more of the food deliveries are not taking place, and the stocks diminish continuously. The militia's strength ends at the town gate. Outside the town wall, nobody is safe from the bandits' armed raids.

There is war in Khorinis. A civil war.

But there is something else that could not be foreseen. Evil is not dead, but is rearing its ugly head again. But this time it is set on delivering a deathblow to humanity, and no one can stop it.

    No one?

HomeLAN - How will character generation be handled for Gothic II?

Stefan Kalveram - At the beginning of the game, there is no character generation. You start with the player from the Gothic I.

Kai Rosenkranz - There is no particular character generation. Instead, you slip into the role of the nameless hero you got to know in Gothic I. When you start the game, you enter the world straightaway without enduring a time-consuming character generation. The way your character evolves depends on your decisions during gameplay.

HomeLAN - What kinds of characters and professions will the player have a choice from in the game?

Stefan Kalveram - You can become a warrior, a paladin or a magician, You will become one of these characters by joining their guilds.

Kai Rosenkranz - You can become a paladin, a dragon slayer or a mage. As a paladin, you honourably fight for the public’s safety and lend your allegiance to the king. As a dragon slayer, you can not satisfy your thirst for adventure, and you measure your achievements by the amount of blood dripping from your sword’s blade. As a mage, you’ll be initiated into the secrets of magic, and you choose the path of diplomacy… well, and fireballs, if necessary.

HomeLAN - What sorts of levels and settings will Gothic II take place in?

Kai Rosenkranz - In contrast to the first game, this world is not gloomy and dark throughout the whole game. Around the former colony, the land is green and lush, and the kingdom’s capital is a splendid city. In the course of the game you’ll be able visit the colony, but (of course) there are some stifling dungeons waiting for you.

HomeLAN - What sorts of enemies and NPC will be encountered in the sequel?

Kai Rosenkranz - All of the creatures you dissected in Gothic I will stage a comeback in the sequel. We have also added some new menacing species. This time, we have dragons. During your adventure, you’ll meet all different kinds of NPCs. Many of these characters are not as dowdy as they were in the original Gothic, especially in the city where you’ll meet civilized men and women.

HomeLAN - What sort of new weapons and items will be featured in Gothic II?

Kai Rosenkranz - We don’t want to give too much away, so we won’t enumerate on every single new item. Generally speaking, however, there are loads of new items and weapons. Right now, we’re balancing their values.

HomeLAN - What other new gameplay features will be in the sequel?

Kai Rosenkranz - You can forge your own sword, if you desire. All you need to do is to learn how to handle the blacksmith and get the raw material. We made a timid first step in that direction in Gothic I, but it’s been fully developed in the sequel. By the way, the same principle goes for the creation of your own magic runes.

HomeLAN - At the moment, what is the current status of the game's progress and when do you expect it to be completed?

Kai Rosenkranz - Well, since we have only a few more weeks to go, I sincerely hope we’re close to completion . Right now, we have a playable German version with outstanding (and almost completed) visuals, but some parts of the story still need to be implemented. The game is scheduled to release in November in the U.S.

    Gothic 2 Interview

    Available: 29 November, 2002
    Article by Andreas "Interman" Misund

Gothic 1 was actually one of the few pc role-playing games I didn’t instantly try. Instead I tried it a while after its release, mainly because I was bored with the currently released games. I didn’t have huge expectations, but it’s great to see that I can be really wrong just by looking at screenshots. My first impressions were fairly decent, but it wasn’t until I had played it a bit that I understood the greatness of Gothic. Finally you could play in an environment where the NPCs actually had their own lives and things happened. Sadly I got stuck very near the end, but I can assure you that the story, the characters and the setting of Gothic 1 is something I recommend to anyone. It could of course use improvements, and luckily Piranha Bytes are well under way with the sequel, Gothic II. I can assure you, this time it will be reviewed as soon as absolutely possible.
    -Andreas ‘Interman’ Misund

The game will be published by Jowood and here is what Stephan Berger and Kai Rosenkranz have to say about it:

Hello there. Please introduce yourself and your role in the development of Gothic II.

    KaiRo: My name is Kai Rosenkranz, and I’m mainly working as a composer and sound designer for Piranha Bytes. I’ve done the music and sound effects for Gothic I, and right now I’m tinkering around at the game audio for Gothic II;

(Stefan Berger is the Product Manager for the title)

Gothic II seems to have an intriguing story. Please delve on it.

Stefan: The mine valley of Khorinis. The glorious days of the once productive mines in this small seaside region were long over. Surrounded by the impenetrable magical barrier, the slaves eked out their miserable existence in this apparently natural prison.

One brave man managed to burst the bonds of imprisonment. Following his own call to freedom, he ventured deep into the subterranean temples. Willing to do whatever was necessary, he went out to banish Evil and destroy the magical barrier forever. Spurred by the hatred of men long-suppressed, the prisoners streamed trough the only pass to freedom.

No one in Khorinis had been prepared for this. Too long had they lived under the deceptive notion of security granted by the apparently indestructible magical dome. The small militia garrison could not put up enough forces against the onrush. After numerous bloody clashes, many captives succeeded to escape and found safety in the woods or rugged mountains of the surrounding countryside.

The steadily escalating number of raids in the vicinity of the town wall and the bandits' ever-increasing boldness seemed to paralyze the whole town. Angered by the militia's inability to protect their farms, some of the farmers formed an alliance with the refugees, no longer willing to pay allegiance to the king.

Khorinis is facing an uncertain future. Due to the farmers' decreasing production, more and more of the food deliveries do not take place, and the stocks diminish continuously.
The militia's might ends at the town gate. Outside the town wall, nobody is safe from the bandits' armed raids.

There is war in Khorinis. A civil war.

But there is something else that could not be foreseen.
Evil is not dead, rearing its ugly head again.
But this time it is set on delivering the deathblow to humanity, and no one can stop it.

    No one?

There has been a great amount of role-playing games this year alone. How will Gothic II stand out from the competition?

Stefan: Gothic II will have a much better

    • Graphic
    • Speech and sound system
    • Artificial Intelligence
    • World (around 25km² landscape)
    • More items and weapons
    • Big monsters
    • ...

So you see we have a lot of things they are much better than in other games. But the most important thing is that we tell the gamers a story. A game can have thousand of features, but when it has no story it is not good….

KaiRo: Pointing out one or two aspects necessarily means discriminating the others, but I personally put the emphasis on the brilliant story and AI. The game enthralls you through it’s captivating plot and the NPCs’ lifelike behavior, and I’m positive that we’ll beat any other game in terms of that.

What kind of world will Gothic II take place in and how large is it?

KaiRo: Now that the barrier doesn’t enclose the scenery, you’ll be able to explore the entire island of Myrtana. The extent of the new world is three times as large as the colony that formed the setting of Gothic I, which comes to approximately 25km².

What type of characters will you be able to play? Any “unique” characters?

KaiRo: Generally speaking, you slip into the role of the nameless hero that you’ve become very attached to in Gothic I. Once again, you have to decide which guild to join, either the paladins, the mages or the dragon slayers.

How effective is the artificial intelligence? Will your actions make a large difference on how people treat you?

KaiRo: Well, the AI is so extensive and complex we could almost write a book about it. To state at least one major consideration: we focused on the NPCs’ daily routines and their reactions to the player. Depending on how you treat people, you’ll either get to know their friendly or their nasty side. If you’ve really spoilt your chances with someone, he’ll remember that and behave accordingly.

What kind of graphics engine will Gothic II use? Will it be able to support low-end computers?

KaiRo: Gothic II is based on the technology used for the first part, but we added some new features and effects. Early indications regarding the system requirements point to a 800MHz machine with 256 MB RAM and a 32MB graphic card, but please don’t nail be down to that…

Please briefly digress on some of the monsters that you will fight.

KaiRo: Unfortunately, the minor detail that there are dragons in the world of Gothic II leaked out before, so there’s no need to make such a big secret out of it anymore. Meanwhile, you can even see dragons in the official trailer.

Beyond that, the fauna comes up with some new species, and once again, we tried to give them a natural, animal-like but yet menacing appearance.

Also please describe some of the weapons and other items that you will able to use.

KaiRo: You’ll be able to find all kinds of weapons that somehow fit into the medieval scenery. I don’t want to give too much away by enumerating them, but you can rest assured we added some new and powerful weapons.

    What about the interface?

KaiRo: Well, we drastically simplified the controls. Easy access is guaranteed for those who just couldn’t get used to Gothic’s interface, since you can configure almost everything concerning the controls in Gothic II. We recommend to use both the mouse and the keyboard, as for the current version, the interface is designed to be easy-to-handle and transparent for that combination of input devices.

Will there be a multiplayer component, and if so, comment on some of the features.

Stefan: There will be no Multiplayer mode in the game.

How far is in the game in development and when will it hit stores?

Stefan: The game will hit the stores Q4.

    Please add any final comments.

KaiRo: As you can see, our upcoming project has a “II” at the end of the name. In many cases, economic and financial reasons lead to the decision to make a sequel, as the developers consider it to be profitable. But believe it or not, that’s not the same with us. We couldn’t foresee the popularity of Gothic, and we were overwhelmed by the praise from both the players and the editors. Highly motivated by this success, we gathered to discuss a possible sequel to Gothic. These discussions turned out to be very creative and productive, and we came up with new ideas and concepts in piles. For us, developing another addition to the series is a great pleasure. Hopefully we’ll succeed in making Gothic II as enjoyable as the first part.

    1. Erst einmal "Hallo"!

*schwitz*
