Ok, seems like this is turning into another "go-to-hell-with-oblivion" and "oblivion-is-good" thread, and the thread creator has dissapeared in the meantime
    Not yet disappeared.

I checked videos of recommended games - Gothic 3 and Risen so far are closest imo. Witcher, Two Worlds and Ultima 9: Ascension is also looks interesting. Oblivion is too far from what I call Gothic game, but still worth a look. I don't like those hand-heldiing GPS compass thing tho.
I'm packed more than enough so far. Thanks for recommendations.

If you give Ultima 9 a try you should know that it has many frustrating bugs, but in the end it's a rewarding experience.
Also the game will start in an unexpected way, but you will enter the medieval-fantasy world soon enough. The variation of terrain and areas is amazing but the world is extremely small.

While not exactly Gothic-like, I would imagine that someone who enjoys Gothic, and can live with having rather dated graphics in their games:
Ultima underworld 1-2 (in particular 2, which is an amazing game that deserves to be played by everyone).

Also, Ultima 9 has a surprising amount of similarities to Gothic (1 & 2). It has this semi-linear structure in an open world, and there are a few fan fixes for the game (get the dialogue patch).

Also, if you want something along the line of gothic 3, take a look at Two worlds (PC version, avoid the console version like the plague!)

    Gothic-like games?

    Risen
    Arcania
    TES
    TW
Fable (sadly doesn't have free roam)
The Witcher is also a very good game...but again no free roaming
    Gothic 3 with CM Patches

Also there are other countless ones.Just look around and google.
Oh and Arcania has free roam as opposed to Fable and The Witcher?

ON: Try Risen, it is indeed the closest thing to Gothic I and II... You could also go for Gothic III but be sure to install the latest COmmunity Patch ;-)

Oh, and if you're looking for a gothic-like difficulty game, really nice atmosphere and quite a bit of Roleplay and Development with your Characters, spiced with some of the best Turn-Based Strategy, then you MUST try Jagged Alliance 2!... It is a bit of a stretch from ur average action-RPG but the atmosphere and the general feel it gives you while playing it, at least in my case, makes u think of Gothic. I guess this is why these 2 games are among my all-time favourites... maybe even top 2.

    Your opinion, but still, why?
It's an awesome game in my opinion, one of the best RPG's I know. The spell system is just... Great! The melee and ranged aren't as intuitive but still pretty good. The story is great aswell. It's got atmosphere, that's for sure.

    Mount & Blade!
This game doesn't have any equals to the gothic games.
But i'ts has something gothic doesn't. Mounted battles with horses!!
    Awesome!

the game is a litte bit hard and slow at the begining, but once you start gaining some levels it's getting better and better!

It's a good waste of time.
For you who havent played it. Try it!

Oh another one of those threads, we have so many threads that ask about similar games to gothic, they usually end up not giving any viable results; there's no equal to Gothic

Lolz why do people keep saying TES:4 is similar to Gothic. It is complete dog crap. The quests are boring, characters are dull, the fighting/RPG system is the most dumbed down I've ever seen, ever, and people still call an obvious action adventure game and RPG because it has 'stats' in it.

Nothing wrong with people thinking that Oblivion is like Gothic. Opinions are allowed.

Well, there aren't very many single character rpg's with shooter movement controls (move forwards, bacwards, sideways and turn with camera), realtime action based combat and actually an rpg (not some hack&slash).
Many seem to adopt the consolish controls, where you only move forwards, and down and sideways means you move (forwards) in that direction, and the mouse just turns your camera.
Of course such controls would be silly in shooters, but the controls in shooters allows for high precision, and the feeling that you're actually directly in control. Even though camera is placed behind, much of the feeling is the same.

I wouldn't say character development in Oblivion is dumbed down. I'd rather say it's very flawed, and it encourages grinding (like jumping up and down for an hour, just to raise minor skill, so you can get better attribute bonus). The fact that enemies scales to your level just makes it even more flawed.

Try Nehrim. It's an Oblivion "mod". In reality it's a completely new game using much of the same resources and the same game engine. It's made more gothicish. Not in the direction of G3, but the others. It's a more story driven game (Oblivion was very sandbox), and the handcrafted enviroments are quite stunning. They've done a really good job. It might crash a few times, but I haven't encountered any other bugs (maybe some very minor ones), and restarting and loading save is atleast quite a bit faster than G3

Such differences can be easily argued in a fashionable manner. Like duels with swords, where you bow to your opponent, even though you're gonna drive a sword into him a few minutes later. It's all about protocol.

I will back that. Though you still have the awful Oblivion combat and mana regen, etc. Still it isn't a bad experience though I wish that certain mods would be ported over to Nehrim.

So it seems we're not allowed to say, "Go f*** yourself!" but we're allowed to say "Go f*** yourself, sir!"

What Tratos says is true. Before duelling or fighting, fencers and martial artists bow to each other before the fight.
