Beta-Test report from RPGrpgplay.ru
( Original Report )
Thanks to Voland for the translation into german, here is the english version:
- The developers canceled most of the typical gameplay elements from the old series
- The character developement doesn't remind on gothic, more on Diablo
- You can brew potions everywhere now, via the menu, even if you are *knee deep in the swamp*
No alchemy table is needed
- Although there are beds, you can't sleep in them
- No thief skills, you are opening crates via minigame
- People don't react when you enter their houses or slaughter their pets
- NPC's with a green edge are immortal, you can't hit them
- The world seems sterile. One cannot interact with many things
- Fighting system is pretty easy. Opponents aren't able to block and if they are making heavy hits, they are shining blue ( as a warning ) and it lasts pretty long till they hit
- level of Difficulty doesn't change the AI of the opponents, just the damage and the resistant force
- *Manual shooting with the bow* works just like in Gothic 3
- As a mage he tested lightening and fireball and perceived them as poor ( whatever he means with that )
- The first locked crate was found in Stewark
- You can ( only? ) walk fast when you use a special rune
- Graphics are nice, but the ISO-perspective while fighting sucks
- The quests are easy
- The author tested the game on a Core 2 Duo, 3 GHz, 4GB RAM, GeForce 9800 GT, but it lagged because of the bad optimization.
- The author liked the music.
- The author thinks that ArcaniA has nothing then old names and faces in common with Gothic.

Hated those non killabele NPC's in G1..
-
Can't really judge the game based on this. If the game is playable and has a nice story (he makes no reference to neither of those things) then we could cope with the details (even though these little details contribute to the Gothic-feeling).

Sad news.
Hopefully the reviewer is wrong, but from what I've seen so far I'm thinking he's probably right. Sucks.

Ever played a game based on a book or a movie you liked? Most times the story in game matches the one from the book/movie. And most times the game play sucks so bad the story can't compensate for how horrible the game play is. And I don't view everything on that list as just being a little detail.
It's an action RPG. And yet they take out certain RPG elements, and reduce the action, which will comprise about 50% of your game time if not a lot more, to mindless hack and slash. Damn story better be on par with Lord of the Rings in order to make up for these "small" details.

don`t know what to say anymore. i just hope that jowood won`t sell this piece of crap and the circus will end here .
-
Oh but JoWooD will. I thought that I might try the demo but after reading Forenperser's post, I think that it'll probably turn out to be a waste of time and money (to the ISP) for me.

A nice story makes no nice game.
A game is meant to be *played*.
If I only want a good story, then I read a book.
And playable, well, obviously the game is well optimized.

is playable and has a nice story
_
And yes in that list above there are references to some gameplay elements BUT not major ones.
Anyway I don't expect something good either.
-
Yes, and I posted that it is obivously * not * playable, look at the post above.
And yes in that list above there are references to some gameplay elements BUT not major ones.
Then what is major for you?
-
Well, does it really matter to know? My opinion is that even without these elements a game could be fun if the rest of it is developed, let's say, in the right direction.
When G3 came out previews were far worse but I really enjoyed it when I played it. So you never know.
In general don't trust reviews/previews etc. If you gonna play G4 and you think like "this is gonna be a bad game", then you definitely won't enjoy it. Prejudice is not a good thing.

They most probably played the demo. Interesting thing is that the demo was playable at the GamesCom, and ever since no reviewer complained about some of those things.

Yes they did.
In the german section there are more then 10 threads of people who played it at the gc and only 2 reports were positive.
And *no* he didn't just play the demo, it was a *beta-test*.

This, I agree with. Takes a few hours at most to d/l it and a few minutes to a few hours to give it a quick spin and you'll be all the wiser for it afterwards.

The fact that reviewers didn't complain should ring alarm bells in your ears. There is a high chance this game will not resemble Gothic the slightest. It can be a good / decent game, but it won't be Gothic. And that's what the beta tester said basically.
-
Come on! You can't even sleep in beds?! How are we supposed to advance the time of the day? Exploring during night time is almost impossible. And you don't have to use alchemy tables for potions? What kind of Gothic is this?

I remember seeing the hero lie in a bed, but I don't know if a sleep routine can be involved.
