Gothic 3, want to update to 1.74 patch, but to still keep my patched 1.60 save games.

I have the Steam version of Gothic 3 and I love it, but I do want to update the patch to the new 1.74. The problem is, I have the 1.60 patch currently installed, which is currently the main patch the comes with the Gothic 3 PC game when you purchase it, the patch is auto installed when you install the game.

The problem is, I had no idea there was a better patch out there before I started to play and I am now at the part where I finally found Xardas, and spoke to Chris, etc, and just finally got to Cape Dun, which I know is still fairly close to the start of the game.

But even though I may only be in day 9 and have already reached level 19, I have so many items that I have gained just by looking around all over the place and just built up to quite a bit of gold. I really do not wanna lose all the work I have already done.

But I really do wanna install the new 1.74 community patch, but I don't wanna have to restart the game from scratch. So what I am asking is, if anyone knows any idea at all, where I am able to install the 1.74 community patch, but still being able to keep my current save games.

I read on Steam's Gothic forum, and on the patch release notes, that when patching up to 1.74, if your current patch version is 1.60, which mine currently is, then you cannot use your save games. But I am sure there must be some kind of work around that will allow me to keep them and continue playing.

I am sure that there must be someone who has been able to succeed at what I am asking, and if so, then can someone pretty please with a cherry on top, please tell me how.

PS: For tech reasons, I thought to add some System info of my computer that might be able to help me with my request.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo (Duel Core Processor)
    Additional CPU Stuff: E7500 @ 2.93 GHz
    RAM: 10 GB
    HARD DRIVE: 1.5 TB
GRAPHICS CARD: NVIDIA GeForce GT 240
SOUND CARD: No info needed here.
DTV TUNER CARD: Just a basic Digital TV Tuner card with Video capture, etc.

I think this is more than enough tech specs on my computer that you need, but I hope this will help you all out with my problem.

Thanks in advance for any and all help provided.

Unfortunately, you want the impossible thing: to transfer incompatible savings from version 1.60 on 1.7x. However, you can try to rename these files manually:
    Spoiler:(zum lesen bitte Text markieren)
    *.g3sav-> *.g3savcp, *.g3savdat-> *.g3savcpdat

But because of a large quantity of the changes imported to Gothic 3 world by CP 1.7x, these savings will be unworkable or will cause a heap of various errors during gameplay. Therefore don't try to combine incompatible things and after applying of the last patch begin game anew.

P.S.: Welcome to the forum, newbie!

    First and foremost §welcome

    Now, on to the matter.

While I prefectly understand your concern, I strongly recommend you installing latest patch (Community Patch 1.74), which will basically present you Gothic 3 in a manner you couldn't have imagined. It makes the game what it should have been right from the start.

Check CPT 1.74 changelog Right Here and while scrolling down to the 1.60 patch notes, read later changes to the game, and decide for yourself if it's worth the effort of ruining the game by renaming savedgames, which will definitely bring up a lot of problems. Should you decided installing it, make sure you read Game Manual installer pops during instalation.
You can download CPT 1.74 from here.

    I hope this helped. Regards.

Thanks to everyone for you help. My internet speed has just been reset for this month and I have just began to be able to download the 1.74 patch to install it. It will take me 38 minutes to download, but that is better than 2 days, which the server would have reset and needed to restart, but now, I can download it fully and faster, because I went over my 50 GB download limit.

Anyway, I am downloading it now and will install it soon. I just needed to ask that if I do not happen to like the new patch and wish to remove it, back to the older 1.60 version. So could someone please explain to me how I would be able to delete the patch if I don't like it. I know about the logs that tell you about all of the changes made, but the heck if I actually understand what it all means. lol.

I also need to ask, about, that I do currently have the 1.60 Steam Game Downloaded version, which I play on steam, but they have listed the 1.73 patch, so will this 1.74 patch work on my Steam version of gothic 3.

One last thing, is that I noticed that there appears to be several patches going from 1.60 all the way up to the 1.74 and some games I have played in the past actually require you to install each seperate patch, then install the next patch up, and keep on doing so until you install the final patch, and then sometimes you have to install like a 1.1 patch to get it to 1.5, then install a 1.6 patch to get it to 1.10 etc.

This is where I tend to get confused. So I am basically asking, that am I able to just install the 1.74 patch onto my 1.60 game version without having to download and install any others in between?

I appreciate any and all help you guys are able to provide me with. Thank you to you all for all of your help so far.

I'm not very sure about the steam version, i have it as a dvd, so i kinda guess and can be wrong, ... anyway:

If you have enough space on your harddisk, go to the folder g3 is installed in, copy & paste everything to a seperate folder somewhere else, not in the g3 installation folder, so you have a back up from the cp1.6 version. Do this before you install the CP1.74.

If you then install cp1.74 and don't like it, you could go to the g3-install folder, delete all and copy &paste everything back from the backup folder to the g3 install folder.

    Most probably, yes.

You only need CP1.74, nothing else, all former patches are included.

    You're most welcome.

CPT 1.60: Unfortunatelly, I would take as best solution for reverting back to CPT 1.60 the one presented by Werner. Well, never bothered with this, because I have been playing Gothic 3 for quite some time now, and I know CPT 1.74 provides the best game experience there is.

About Steam: I simply have no idea what to tell you. I only played two games on Steam: Counter Strike and America's Army, and that was years ago.

You concern regarding CPT 1.73 vs 1.74: All you need for an excellent gameplay comes with CPT 1.73, but the guys decided to bring up some graphic improvements and issue some technical workarounds in respect to some video cards problems, players were experiencing while playing CPT 1.73. You can find more info HERE.

*small aside note:* I would recommend you playing it with AB / AI on, on Medium Difficulty.

    Regards, k.
