Just picked up Gothic 2 Gold and I have to say it's been a lot of fun, till now.
I'm lvl 3 and in the first town you get to after leaving the Tower.
The problem is, the mobs that I need to kill to be accepted as an Apprentice (to gain Citizenship) are Wolves and I can't seem to be able to pull just one. There's a pack of 3 outside the gate in a little ravine. And all eventually come running and kill me quick.
I'm pretty broke atm (26g) and I only have 5 Ability Points to spend.
Every where else I go I seem to find mobs that are too powerful, from boars to bandits.
I feel like I made a mistake along the way at some point but I have no clue where.
I bought some leather armor thinking that might help me survive better but it's not really helping, at least not enough.
Using a 40dps 1h sword.
I've spent 5 points in 1h weapons and learned Skinning so far.
I like the game as there's a ton of content (it seems) but it also seems fairly limited (or difficult) as to ways to progress through it.
Any suggestions would be very welcome!
If I need to start over then I guess that's what I'll have to do. But I'm hoping there's a solution I'm not aware of.
If I could just find enough lower lvl mobs to kill and raise my stats more that would be ideal...
Talk to Bosper's old apprentice Bartok. He stands in front of the beer stand near the barracks, or in the marketplace. He'll agree to go hunting with you for 50gl. Follow him and with his help you should be able to kill enough wolves to get enough wolf skins. Once you have the wolf skins you can stop hunting with him.
Be careful.....if you continue hunting with him even after you have enough skins you may run into more than you can handle. Better to wait and do that on another play through when you've gotten better at the game.

Although... going just a little further will get you an Ork weapon for another apprentice quest. Bartok's pretty tough, just make sure you save before going on in case it takes a few tries.
Hi
If this is your first time playing gothic 2 Just put your mind to rest you have not made any mistakes. To begin with you might want to start of with Leveling up a your Charter best way to do that is to go around the wilderness killing weaker monsters like rats and maulrats stay away from anything to strong at the moment.
when playing the game on your keyboard press letter c as this will bring up your Charters display which will show you what skills your charter has and will need to gain you will also see the amout experance points required to get to next level. Killing monsters and completing in town side quests gives you nessacry points to level up.
also when in forrest keep an eye open for healing plant and herbs as they will help you renerate health sleeping also has same affects.
more importantly When you level up you will need to find a teacher to improve your skills right now you are in the city of kronois go to the milisha training ground a teacher there will teach you sword fighting focus on 1 handed fighting skills also you will want to build your strenght up to do that go to the harbour district and speak to the black smith there he may ask for gold in return for his services try to fimilar your self with everyone in the city as you will start to notice who will teach you use fill skills speak to lares he will teach you Dexterity you will need that for handling crossbows.
Skills usefull (Str, Dex, one handed sword, Crossbow)
I would just stick to one handed sword fighting as its faster than 2 handed sword fighting also learn how to block as that will surely help you with harder enemys and take less damage.
also keep an eye out for swords and other vaulables as it will help build your currency.
you said you need to kill three wolfs try lour them back to the city gard let them do the work for you.
if you are planing to become an apprentice become a blalk smith with Hagred as for every sword you make he gives 100 gold coins.
thorban the joiner will teach you lock picking if you settle gretas det with mateo speak with the merchant mateo he will explain then speak wiht greta offer to pay the det of 100 gold then forban the carpenter will teach you lock picking.
if you get lost with quests press L on keyboard it brings up quest log.
Although... going just a little further will get you an Ork weapon for another apprentice quest. Bartok's pretty tough, just make sure you save before going on in case it takes a few tries.
And yet he can get one much faster and easier than going hunting with Bartok.
'nuff said. No reason in going into areas unasked for.
Well I went Hunting with Bartok? and we killed 4 wolves...AND we were able to take out the Orc the first try
I hit lvl 4 and now have 10 Ability points saved.
Thanks to you guys
Having a hard time deciding between raising Str or Dex?
And I'm not sure if I want to go Pally or Merc lol
Decision, Decisions....heh
I did read that there's a cool sword to be had with some connection to the Thieves Guild...but I turned a Thief over to the Paladins for stealing from the merchants...so I probably burned that bridge heh. Already had one Assassination attempt, unsuccessful
Very cool game, though I can't seem to shake the feeling of accidental doing something wrong that will haunt me later. I guess that comes with having competing factions. I wish I could just stay neutral and still quest and progress in the story. Don't think that's an option though heh
I've learned that F5 IS your Best Friend in this game though!!! (and F9)
Wish there was some way to tell the difficulty of a mob when you come across them..I try and quick save before any encounter! Or major plot line IF I can tell it's an important discussion.
I feel like I've only scratched the surface of the game thus far and I'm surprised that I'm as excited with a game that's quite a few years old now. But even with the dated tech and graphics there are so many little (and big) gameplay concepts and functions that really make this game/world stand out as something special.
Thanks for all the help, I'm reading 2 game FAQS that were written a few years ago and trying to pick up all the basics and tips I can. Trying to avoid going too far and seeing spoilers.
I typically hate using/reading guides except for basics and areas I've already cleared...I hate the idea of "reading" what I'm suppose to do and then doing it. Kind of takes the adventure out of things. That said, in a game like this I think it would be very easy to miss quite a few things simply because not knowing where to look or who to talk to. So for me there's a fine line between trying to blindly explore and guess what's the best choices or options AND wanting a bit of guidance from those who've gone before...
But I'm learning more each time I play and that's exciting
Anyway, thx again and if it's ok I might chime back in if more questions arise that I can't seem to reach a decision on...hope that will be ok
My tip of the day to you is that you need the quest from Mattheo: Mattheo wants his gold back and that is like 100g, the gold is now at Thorben(carpenter)'s daughter, intimidate her or you won't get the exp for that and you get the money/beat her up and get the money(then you have to pay a bounty to Lord Andre in the Barracks). Dont give the money to mattheo in order to buy other things. the money can be payd later.
2nd go to the harbor, talk to lares he'll turn around when he recognizes you talk to him, and ask him if he would bring you to the mercenaries, wich brings some experience and money on the way;molerats, scavengers, caves.
edit: Ps if you pray and donate 100g you get bonuses ( hp str dex or mana) only do this at shrines and once a day
Fisrtly I would not worry about doing things wrong as the game story is based on the events and choices you make there will be times you will step on other factions toes. but just continue playing and learning as much as you can.
training for know I would recommened STR and 1 handed sword fighting
Vampyro has mention about a quest for mateo get the gold from the thorban the carpenters daughter Gretta There may be a danger there as if you beat her up for the gold it is quite possible Thorbon will not teach you lockpicking skills I would recommend offering gretta to pay the gold she needs to pay matteo that way Thorban will see you as a descent outstnding person
Thorban will only teach you if he can trust you beating up his daughter could spoil your chances.
Since I'm too lazy to read everything on an iPod I'll just give some general advice:
concentrate on 1 attribute/weapon dexterity is good for ranged weapons but you'll do low close combat damage; it's the other way around with strengh ...
Do all the quests before joining a guild for extra lvl
I'm guessing that you are playing Night of the Raven.
Spoiler:(zum lesen bitte Text markieren)
At the beginning, when conversation ends, quickly run to the bookstand on the right(Xardas will walk towards the book and read it and you will not be able to read it if he gets to it first)read it for 25 xp.Get old stone tablet from bench then ask Xardas about it for 50 xp.read the other book for 25 xp.go up to the top level of the tower and read the 5 books for 25xp each.

Go to Vatras and give him the letter(200 xp),tell him you got it from Cavalorn(200 xp)
Go to th front of Thorben's,climb up onto the chest and onto the roof, jump onto Matteo's roof, climb down onto the wall and into the storage area.Open the chests for 9 citizens clothes and 1 leather armor plus other items
Climb onto the wall using the crates in the corner and walk around to the back of Matteo's and jump down.
To exit town, climb onto the roof near Carl the blacksmith.from there you can climb onto the city wall walk left as far as you can and jump down.wearing the leather armor the city guard will let you in
I read a bit about you spoiled message and saw something about a belt and tablet, that's only in NOTR right?
and I read that you have to be quick to read one of the books at Xardas's Tower; then Xardas will go and read the other book. and if you send him to the circle of the sun you can read it anyway.(it doen'st matter much then but still)
Yes, that's NotR only.
And I'd suggest Strength+2H instead of 1H, since 2H fghting is much easier (greater reach = easier).
Like the chinese say: the shorter the dao, the greater the danger.
I'd wait training dexterity and bow/crossbow for later.
I prefer 2h, but especially in Notr it can be harder in the beginning, due to higher strength requierements for wielding a weapon of a specific dmg, and the fact there's so few of them.
Learn strength to wield a capable weapon, and you should very early learn up to 30% in 1h sword fighting. It advances you from rookie to fighter, and makes your moves alot better.
Try to save permanent bonus items until later. (lp for every attribute point will increase the higher they are)
Save king's sorrel.
If you want to make strength bonus potions (very useful), don't eat dragonroots, save them.
PS. your sword dmg is not dps (damage per second). It is dmg, meaning amount of damage upon hit. Strength will also increase dmg. Dexterity increases bow/xbow dmg.

@KGS why should you get more exp for a quest if your guildless?
What he means is do all the quests you can for both guilds, pally & merc, before you join any guild. Once you join a guild you can no longer do quests for the other guilds. Get all the xp you can while guildless.

That is a matter of opinion. Many find the 1H to be easier, and prefer the 1H fighting style over that of the 2H. Both have certain advantages and disadvantages.
I'd suggest that one take time to learn both. One has to train them both to a certain degree anyway. If I was a first time player I'd train both to 30% while upping my str. and then I'd see which style I like best. There is no wrong choice in this matter. Use that which is most comfortable to you and your style.

Which is, in NotR you train your strength almost exclusively at start if you plan on going mêlée. Also know which weapons to use help a lot (example, NOT the wolf knife that cavalorn gives you (reason: abysmal range of 30, less than half that of the heavy branch)).
