Chapter 2: What books are people reading at the moment?

This is chapter 2 of this nice book.

Title says it. Share your thoughts, impressions or just read.

Happiness is what motivates me through its absence!

Faith is what makes you weak!

Love is nothing but an egocentric game.

Depends on how horror you want it (Stephen King like) . If you want mystery go with Dan Brown - if you like his writing style!

Anyway, I'm trying to read the ones they call "must-read" books. So I gave I try to this one:

It's too early to say, but it seems kinda interesting.

I´m reading at the moment "Under the dome" from stephen King, it´s his newest novel as far as i know, could very well be something for you. very compelling and an interesting setting.

It's surprising how many of these are actually really good. Well, actually, it isn't surprising, but what is a bit surprising perhaps is that they really are timeless classics, they can be written 200 years or more ago and still appeal to today's people without much connection to the time and age when they were written.

I always thought I'd find Hemingway boring and mind-numbing because people always describe him as the guy who writes long stories about people who don't do anything, and whilst that is true to some extent, he's still one of my absolute favourite authors.

It´s even more surprising how school is able to ruin even the greatest books.

I think many people have a completly wrong understanding of "high literature" simply because their theachers ruined it for them in the classroom.

+1... most people basically dislike what they study by default

I just hated my teachers for not allowing me to read what I wanted. They said books about the holocaust, like Leon Uris' Mila 18, wasn't suitable for a 16-year old (when I'd already read it and others at 12). I hated that they forced me to read trite "youth novels" when I wanted to read something with real substance. On the other hand, my history teacher encouraged us to read stuff like Remarque's All Quiet On The Western Front and even lent us copies of that book... I read the whole thing in one evening and it's still one of the most memorable books I've read.

Another weird thing is that when I read something for myself, anything, no matter how technical or complicated, I memorize most of it. When I read something for my classes at university, I have problems remembering even the topic

yeah, it depends very strongly on the teacher you have, but in my experience german teachers (as i speak german) are particulary unaible to spark some enthusiasm in their students.

I had 7 years of deeply disappointing german classes, only in the last year there was a glimpse of hope because we finally got a teacher who could motivate at least part of the class to take an interest in the books that we read (or at least were supposed to read)

Another weird thing is that when I read something for myself, anything, no matter how technical or complicated, I memorize most of it. When I read something for my classes at university, I have problems remembering even the topic
yeah i know that too, but it helps wenn you trick your mind into thinking that you are reading this just for fun.

Maybe just my mind is so stupid, but it helps when i dont read those texts not while really studying, but in the evening or in the train.

But it only helps when its about things i am at least remotely interested in.

My pocket book at the moment. Perfect reading for peoples that keep getting distracted by bunnies since it is a collection of short axioms rather than a long text. Easy to continue where you had stopped.
