Mage in Gothic1
I decided to replay the entire series (after starting gothic2 and wanting to play the entire series from the beginning as a result =P). So I now want to replay gothic1 (can't believe that I've played it only once), this time as a magician.
So, in the beginning, is there any reason to invest in melee combat skills, or I should just get past the rough beginning and invest everything in magic once I become a magician?
And when exactly do I get to become a magician? Is it like in Gothic2, at the very beginning (I played so long ago I can't remember).
And I think that I will start in the old camp (last time played as a Templar), but is there any significant difference between the Old Camp and the New Camp?

in Old Camp you are a Shadow and only after killing minecrawlers in Old mine you can become a Fire Mage (the alternative is Guard) and learn the first 4 circles of magic; when the Old Camp exiles the hero, he become Water Mage in New Camp (learn 5° circle of magic) and at last a Necromancer (learn 6° circle of magic by Xardas)
in New Camp to become a Water Mage you must be first of all a Rogue and then a Mercenary; so it's possible only in the 4° chapter; then you can always learn from Xardas etc
in Sect Camp you can learn only the first 4° circle of magic and then nobody teaches you the other two
P.S. sorry I write when Dino already answered

Well, in the beginning it's way easier if you invest in 1h combat and strength. What I usually do, is complete every quest for admission to the camps. This should get me to lvl 10 at least, best case lvl 12. I invest 30 LP in 1h mastery and 60 lp to raise my str to 70(that's how much Scar's sword requires). This should give me about 10-30 spare LP to invest in 1st and 2nd circle.
As for your question if you can become a mage in the very beginning: No. In the end of chapter 2 you can. But by that time you should have about 30-50 LP you can invest in mana and circles.
Btw, the circles in gothic 1 are MUCH more expensive. And you can only buy the runes, you can't create them. Which is... rather expensive.
Look at my best mage stats ever: *click*
That's done without cheats. However I forgot a potion which adds +10 mana points so yeah...
Yes, there is a difference between the old and the new camp. In the old, you may chose between a guard and a mage. In the new camp, you must become a mercenary 1st and then become a mage. Which gives you the opportunity to be 2h weapons + magic While if you're a fire mage, you may never learn 2h combat.
Sorry for the long post. I got carried away
Actually, in the patch I played, you could "think about" being a guard, go up with the fire mage to be ready to swear the oath, become a guard and then have the option to become a mage still open.

What sort of EVIL hacks and mods did you use to desecrate Gothic 1?!?!?!
Only kidding. Are you sure you didn't play it with a mod? Like, Golden or Namless mod or something? Cos I'm quite sure once you became a guard there's no chance of becoming a fire mage.

No, it actually was with no mod. Couldn't even get that Golden Mod working when I tried it.

I also read about this option but it didn't worked for me. After "becoming" a guard there was no way to "revert" to a magician.
Playing like a magician is funny but still I liked more close-combat so I never used too much the runes.
You don't have to buy the runes - you can simple beat the npcs and take their runes.
Also you don't have to worry about the LPs. If you don't have enough, you can summon creatures (each skeleton mage has 5 scrolls - you find them in the fog tower and in the sunken tower of xardas) and kill them for lot of XP Also you can "buy"some such scrolls.

The trick is to get Milten's dialogue as far as you can without saying the oath, then become a guard, and then return to milten for the final line of text so you can become a mage.

"Ask if you can become a fire mage first, then end the conversation.
Now go straight to Coristo, the head fire mage, and talk to him.
(If you became a guard before speaking to Coristo, you will never get
the option to become a fire mage!) Say you want to be a fire mage,
take his test, then let him go up the stairs, and DON'T follow.
Go back to Torus _now_ and say you want to be a guard.
Get your guard armour, train whatever guard skills you want (like crossbows)...
Now you can change your mind any time you wish and still become a fire mage!
(go back to Coristo on the upper floor with the pentagram to become a Fire Mage)"
from Gothic Walkthrough by JemyM
But I'm not sure this really works...

Oh yes it really works, I tried this "option" the last time I played Gothic and I took only the armor guard (I had few LP so I used it only to learn magic circles)
Instead I don't try if it works for a long time, as that Gothic Walkthrough said ("now you can change your mind any time you wish").

To become a guard/mage isn't necessary to kill the queen

@LAZANJA II Hunter: Man, you have some issues. Cool down, get some ice cream, it's hot outside.
@catalinux: Wow I didn't know that. Thanks.
