    The Book of Languages

    Hallo Leute!

    Akaviri

    [Bild: 5416704491?profile=original]

Akaviri is the language of a long extinct human race who went by the same name. They are said to have inhabited the legendarily fabled continent of Akavir, far to the east of Tamriel. This now long gone, old civilization is said to have held the ancestry to what would much later become the order of the Blades, an Imperial organization to protect the ruling Emperor. However, it got, in more modern times, disbanded in favor of the more prominent Penitus Oculatus which has taken up the mantle of stalwart protector, notwithstanding the most recent assassination of Emperor Titus Mede II. in 4E201, which effectively discredited them greatly.

Not much is known about the Akaviri language. There only exist two pages of an Akaviri diary from which we can only deduct a few letters, or glyphs, to indicate as to what their script looked like. What we lack, however, is any sort of grammar or vocabulary. We do know though that it is written from top to bottom and, presumably, based on the scriptures available to us, from right to left. Any other information is purely based on speculation. It is still being discussed as to whether or not Akaviri is actually the same as the Tsaesci language, the tongue of the nefarious, man-eating snake men who devoured the Akaviri, leading to their eventual downfall.

    Ald-Chimeris

    [Bild: 5416728679?profile=original]

Ald-Chimeris is the ancient precursor tongue to modern Dunmeris and was spoken by the Chimer, the progenitors to the Dunmer prior to their transformation. The Chimer lived alongside the Dwemer, the Deep Elves, and later in history, their relationship was plagued by frequent conflicts when the First Council got shattered as Indoril Nerevar found out about Kagrenac's, the Chief Tonal Architect of the Dwemer, to construct and activate the Numidium, their mechanical god. To achieve this, they would have to tap into the power of the heart of Lorkhan. In the end they did, but the Dwemer would, inexplicably and without a trace, disappear, never to be seen or heard from again.

We don't know much about the language of the old Chimer save for the fact that it was quite different to modern Dunmeris, which it eventually evolved into. The only thing we have is a set of lines written in Ald-Chimeris, together with its corresponding translation. Apart from this, however, we possess nothing at all. No vocabulary, no grammar, no alphabet. What we are left with is knowledge of purely historical quality and value. A thing that may be of note, however, is the fact that the Chimer only turned into the Dunmer after Azura's Curse in 1E700, they adopted the Daedric alphabet perhaps only after their transformation. But we can't be sure, as the original Chimer also heavily worshipped the Daedra, more so than their Altmer brethren whom they left on the Summerset Isle.

    Aldmeris

    [Bild: 5417565294?profile=original]

Aldmeris is, aside from Ehlnofex, perhaps one of the oldest mortal languages we know, outclassed only by the Daedric and Dovahzul immortal languages in terms of sheer antiquity. Aldmeris is the ancient ancestral language to all other forms of verbal, merish communication, spawning, over the ages, all other elven tongues and dialects, such as: Altmeris, Ald-Chimeris, Ayleidoon, Bosmeris, Dunmeris and maybe even Dwemeris. It was spoken by the Aldmer, the race of ancestral elves who are by myth said to have hailed from the legendary continent of the same name.

    Altmeris

    [Bild: 5415764852?profile=original]

Altmeris is the tongue spoken by the Altmer of Sumerset - a race of rather self-confident mages and quite proficient wizards who are more often than not misunderstood as being snobbish. Albeit the Thalmor fit that cliche, most non-Thalmor Altmer are unjustly accused of such supremacist behaviour. Nevertheless, a good deal of Altmer mages do in fact consider themselves superior to others, mostly non-mages.

The language itself is said to have directly descended from Aldmeris and as such, the Altmer view their ancient heritage as noble and superior. A very traditional tongue indeed.

    Atmoran/Uralte Runen

    [Bild: 5416078899?profile=original]

Atmoran is the ancient precursor to the modern Nordic, spoken by the old Atmorans who lived on the now frozen continent of, you guessed it, Atmora. This ancient, pre-nordic civilisation was forced to migrate when their homeland began to freeze over for reasons unknown. It is, to this day, still being discussed as to what exactly caused the continent's present-day frigidity, with all possible explanations being subject to speculation.

The language itself is mostly unknown. As it was mainly an oral tongue, there exist next to no written accounts pertaining to it. The only material we have is a set of antediluvian runes taken from stone inscriptions. However, we lack any sort of translation, vocabulary and grammar for now.

    Ayleidoon

    [Bild: 5416336057?profile=original]

Ayleidoon is what scholars call the language of the Ayleids, an eleven race of man-enslaving mer who ruled over the Heartland during the First Era.

Their language is well researched and sports an alphabet as well as s good amount of grammar and vocabulary. Wd also know of a few phrases to pose as text samples. However, while part of the alphabet was woefully incomplete, nes information has been pouring in, represented by red letters instead of black.

The tree above is a sketch of an Ayleid tree that is usually found as an embellishment on the great, marbly doors throughout the Ayleid ruins, if a bit alienated from the original, stone carvings.

    Bosmeris

    [Bild: 5545495883?profile=original]

Bosmeris is the language of the Wood Elves who inhabit the province of Valenwood. In stark contrast to what their name might suggest, the Bosmer are a bloodthirsty, cannibalistic folk bound to ancient rites in their many, many tribes.

The language itself is fairly difficult to analyse for the amount of tribal dialects is estimated to approach infinity. But on these pages we'll document what we know and what we can work with. Alas, we lack an alphabet for this language. But this shall deter us not.

    Daedric

    [Bild: 5998755695?profile=original]

Daedric in and of itself is not so much a language as it is a system of writing not exclusive to the denizens of the planes of Oblivion. It sees just as much use as the common form of writing in Dunmeris or Alt-Redoranis, the language spoken by the modern Dunmer.

While Daedric languages like Dremoran exist, we don't know anything about them. For this, the term "Daedric" almost always refers to the alphabet, linguistically speaking. Otherwise, it is oft used in magic and enchanted runes

    Divine Script

    [Bild: 6404545676?profile=original]

The Divine Script is a system of writing that has been observed in oy two instances: On the Eye of Magnus and on the banners and within the black books that are found within the Apocrypha of Hermaeus Mora.

There are no known translations of this script. As such, scholars were unable to decipher the texts that exist. The name "Divine Script" is given to this set of glyphs by these researchers and is not the true name of this alphabet.

    Dovahzul

    [Bild: 8448231093?profile=original]

Dovahzul, the language of the ancient Dov, the Dragons. While their terrible rule was nirnwide, no single province had been influenced as much as Skyrim. There, most of the existing word walls can be found and Nords famously learned the ways of the Thu'um. The tongue is well-researched and we have knowledge of the alphabet, grammar and vocabulary.

    Dwemeris

    [Bild: 8678086260?profile=original]

The replicated insignia above belongs to a Dwemer lexicon, a special type of artifact constructed by the ancient Dwemer, whose language we will examine next.

There is a great deal known about the taciturn metalworkers, engineers and scientists and their history, yet, we know next to nothing about their language. We know of a total of three alphabets, some very rudimentary grammar, some semblance of a critically lacking vocabulary and are in good possession of several writing examples, one of which we were able to extract a significant portion of the known vocabulary from.

Apart from all this, not much else is known about the tongue of the mysterious Dwemer or Deep Folk.
