Piranha Bytes were able to surprise the game world with their Gothic, which successfully combined the RPG genre with elements of Action, Adventure and a simplified version of the simulation of life in a fantasy setting. Having such experience, studying and interested in the game of Warren Spector, his approach to creating his dream game, Piranhas could do the same with the Shooter genre, successfully combining it with elements of the RPG genres, adding the main character a system of skills and increments aka Deus Ex, inventory, and of course the ability to communicate with each NPC through branched dialogues in the style of Gothic, Witcher, Stalker, Deus Ex and implement a more plausible simulation of life in the spirit Of a-life from Stalker. Even now, games that represent the Immersive sim genre still remain a small part of the gaming history. These games can be counted on the fingers. Piranhas had every opportunity to create an unusual shooter. I think this is an unnecessary and premature conclusion to say that the PB went the right way abandoning the authentic concept of the shooter in favor of Gothic 2. A successful shooter could bring them even more profit than Gothic 2. Of course, the ideal option for the PB would not be to cancel this shooter, but to continue its development in parallel with Gothic 2. Personally, I would very much like to get acquainted with the concept of this project. Game in the spirit of Deus Ex can not be uninteresting and standard by definition. (Those who played the first Deus Ex will understand this perfectly)
As a good game that combines elements of these genres, I can show you another game like Xenus 2 White Gold, visually reminiscent of Far Cry but more focused on RPG and Adventures elements. Specifically, there are not many such shooters, and the Piranhas themselves still have a chance to develop a game of this kind. I would personally like them to unearth their old work on the shooter and use its ideas to develop a new, at their own discretion interpreted design concept after they finish with Elex 2.
As an addition I will attach here links to design documents of the legendary Deus Ex. Reading it you will understand that such approaches to creating shooters are really much more interesting and promising than those which set a goal to create classic shooters where the entire gameplay converges only to shooting at opponents to pass the next unremarkable plot.

why? this is simply my opinion. it's ok for me when you don't like it but that does not make my opinion "premature". I never really got "warm" with Deus Ex or Stalker so why should I have preferred a PB game in this style over Gothic 2? no way

clearly this would have been great but as we all know things did not go this way.

Because we do not know the detailed concept of this game so that would we can predict its prospects and the potential number of the audience that will be interested in it. You said that there are so many shooters like sand on the beach, yes, it's true, but what if would PB had an exceptional project planned that stood out from the General mass, which would theoretically appeal to you even more than Gothic 2? Let's say it would not be like Deus Ex or Stalker or any other game that is not attractive to you. This is of course actyally if you like shooters as a genre at all. If the shooter genre is not attractive to you then Yes the conclusion is quite clear.

Hello, I would like to share my and Phantom's findings here about project Zerberus, more specifically about its engine. Unfortunately i do not understand well enough German to grasp what has already been said here, so please correct me.

The CodeCult CodeCreatures engine was internally called the Golem engine, hence the prefix GE. I deducted this by extracting strings from the executable and all dlls of the CodeCreatures Benchmark Pro. Among the extracted symbols are paths to the original source files. For example:

    U:\golem\work\source\engine\plugins\plsmartrenderer\ge_interface.cpp

Here you can see that the project was stored in a directory by the name Golem. If you wish to take a look at the extracted strings yourself, i have uploaded an archive with a txt file for each dll or exe file to GDrive:

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1csi...ew?usp=sharing

The editor for this engine was called simply GolemEditor as seen in the PCAction video. This can be read well enough if you have the original video file, since the YouTube version has been compressed to the point of not being illegible.

I have also uploaded the original video to GDrive, if you want to further examine it (03:02 )
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NNJ...ew?usp=sharing

An interesting technical note: it seems this engine was supposed to be multiplatform. According to an article from October 2001

Codecult An interesting technology package comes from Bochum. Polygonwald: Codecult's brand new Codecreatures engine supports all game platforms like PC, Xbox, Playstation2, Gamecube, Max and Linux. Codecreatures is the name of the promising Game Development System (GDS), which Codecult from Bochum presented at the ECTS. Piranha Bytes, the makers of Gothic, are currently developing a game based on this powerful overall package for developers; no wonder, after all, both companies are a wholly owned subsidiary of Phenomedia AG. Codecult offers different tiered license contracts for other developers.

When it comes to what was actually produced on this engine: there was a train simulator for Siemens.

    [Bild: Codecreatures_Transrapid_01.jpg]

You can read about it and see more screenshots here: http://www.phoenixgrafik.de/transrapid/transrapid.html

This simulation of the Shanghai Transrapid track was a work I made together with a few other graphic designers for CodeCult using the CodeCult engine. The track is about 30 km long and leads from Long Yang Station to the Shanghai airport Pu Dong . Along the track a highway with several highway crosses and real traffic had to be built. Even the planes of Pu Dong are really flying - you see a plane flying on the right upper edge in this screenie near Pu Dong. Please note that the billboards visible in the screenshots made of a big height aren't visible in the simulation release, as the view height is limited in the finished simulation.

According to a 4Players article, ELO Interactive GmbH licensed this engine to make a "Gamecube version of the successful PC game title Creatures for the publisher SWING! Implement Entertainment Media AG", which also confirms this engine was multi-platform. As far as i know, this game was never released.

    https://www.4players.de/4players.php...izenziert.html

Probably the most ambitious project was the game Das Reich 2005. It used a modified version of the CodeCreatures engine. Sadly, the development halted in 2006.

    https://www.gamezone.de/Das-Reich-20...Screen-911219/

The CodeCult studio (which was a subsidiary of Piranha Bytes) ended up in a similar situation as Piranha Bytes. When Phenomedia AG went bankrupt, members of PB created the company Pluto 13 GmbH which then bought out the studio and all its property. The same happened to CodeCult.

Around Semptember 2002, members of CodeCult created H2Labs Creative Research GmbH and then bought out CodeCult and its property. As far as I know, this is where PB and CC split their ways.

The company owning CodeCult was eventually renamed to Wallaroo Entertainment GmbH and was liquidated in 2008.

    https://www.northdata.de/Wallaroo+En...ochum/HRB+7469

Not much is known what they did from 2002 onwards. Not even checking their website using the Web Archive is much help, as news were added quite infrequently. We know that they went into mobile research and it also seemed that CodeCreatures was used more as a physics simulation tool rather than a game engine. What a shame..

These were all (or most of the things, unless i forgot about anything) me and Phantom found out so far. I hope you all find it interesting, i will post more as the time comes
    Stay safe!

    Hi,

I was browsing through Ralf Marczinzik's website comixfactory.de today, when I stumbled accross a few concept arts, made for what appears to be Project Zerberus.

    Samstag, den 01 November 2008

    text:

    http://www.collider.com/2010/07/29/i...ideo-parodies/

Ralf has many more cool and interesting things on his blog. In one of the posts, he also mentions that him and the late Alex Brüggemann planned to create a game codenamed "Cavegirl". Unfortunately, Phenomedia rejected the idea.

I encourage you to give it a read yourself

I can also can give you an update concerning the Shooter. In the new GameStar Report about Gothic including our Project, there is a new quote from Mike.

edit: I am very interested in what "Cavegirl" should have been.

edit²: "Zerberus" is even written on this one concept art from Ralf. Now I am finally confused too, why it was said to me, that Zerberus wasn't the Sci-Fi Shooter. More and more details seem to say that indeed it was.

Me too. I am not sure how far exactly does this project date to. Seems like it was a multiplayer game.

    Seufz...

    http://www.comixfactory.de/?go=archiv&id=53

    [Bild: 123.jpg]

If the translation was correct, it seems that there were even more cancelled Phenomedia projects that Ralf worked on while he was there.

I would strongly urge you to go through the archive section on his blog. He even has some Gothic 1 concepts, including what appears to be helmet sketches, that I haven't seen anywhere else. Truly amazing

I propose to create a new little subpage about Zerberus on our website, including all quotes we found so far, all articles and these pictures (and maybe a video if that will be). I want to have this separated from the Gothic Archive. I guess after this new infos you will collect all the infos anew anyway. So if you are done with that, please tell me and I try to present them in a nice form.

    What's up.

I have a small update relating to this topic.

Somehow I managed to find a higher resolution footage of the CodeCreatures editor used in the PC Action video. For some reason, I found it on a random Hungarian audio sample file site. I have no clue how it got there. It has no audio, which the original video probably didn't have either.

I have uploaded it to Google Drive if you want to take a look at it yourself:

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/17BD...ew?usp=sharing

What's the most interesting thing about this is that we can finally see what the text in left top of the editor says. As I thought... it actually is a dragon!

    [Bild: 78noOHR.png]

If that isn't convincing enough, you can also see what it says in German in the Package Explorer

    [Bild: CtADCbT.png]

I wonder what they were planning to do with this. Was this just a test model? Was this made for the shooter game? Could this have been an early Gothic 2 model? Probably the first option, although still cool seing this.

Another much smaller thing related to this is that I found the ECTS 2001 article on the old Gamespot site.

    https://web.archive.org/web/20020212...810289,00.html

Unlike the new version, it has links to a video from the event, which seems to have been hosted on a now defunct zdnet ftp site.

    ftp://ftp.zdnet.com/gs/ects2001/ccengine_ects_1_wm.zip

Anyway, I think I am about done with this topic.
    Stay safe!

Ah, that makes sense, as something like this is also mentioned in the second post.

Me too. I am not sure how far exactly does this project date to. Seems like it was a multiplayer game.
It was supposed to be an alien invasion game and looked like this image... they were basically creating Halo! If they had managed to release it before end of 2001, they could've snatched all the halo fame
