I apologise for this comment being in English, but I just had to say the following. I've been playing RPGs since the 1980s - my first one, Knights of Legend (also a medieval setting), was on 5.25" floppy disk!!! And most gamers back in the last century will know of Sierra's excellent games. Another one I remember with great fondness is Albion. And there were many others. So I truly can assure everyone that Gothic made its impact not because there weren't great RPGs around at the time but because it is a fantastic role-playing game and has made the most of the best features of the genre.
To me, Gothic and NotR (dNdR) will never be surpassed. For story-line, for beauty of graphics (I LOVE the skyscapes), for characters, they just grab the player right from the start and immerse you in that world. I agree with those on this thread who said that the stunning thing about these games is that EVERY SINGLE DETAIL was lovingly worked out and crafted.
I have not played ELEX, I'm not sure if I ever will buy it, so am afraid I can't comment on how it measures up to the two PB Greats.
