    MfG MaGoth,
Hey MaGoth. As i understand this: As known there were three different camps (OC, NC and SC) even in this early stage of the game. In previews of game magazines of that time they speak of "three antanogised guilds" (they meant rather the camps). The four different classes were shown in the multiplayer part, which hadn't an implemented story yet to that time, so far as i know. In the story/coop part you were supposed to join one of the three camps or factions (probably right at the gamestart) and the guild or "class" (mage, fighter, thieve, psionic - guilds in Gothic are in fact nothing else but classes with another name) would have been related to the chosen faction or camp. So either you would have been thrown into the barrier to join one of the camps while playing or you would have been part of one of the camps right at the beginning.

But fleshing out the story, in order to balance the camps, they thought that there should be a fighter class in all three camps (mercs, gardists, templars) and some sort of a mage class in all three camps too (therefore the firemages & watermages, psionics, later novices and gurus). While the OC and the NC had some sort of a thief class (shadows and organisators, later bandits), the SC would get some sort of a battle mage (templar). So whether we speak of guilds or classes doesn't make a difference here. The devs choose the term 'guilds' to avoid the more technical and rpg typical term 'classes', in their endeavour to avoid everything which was characteristic for rpgs to that time, like difficult and overflowing character sheets, replacing those systems with simple and immersive solutions. Therefore we prefer to speak of guilds instead of classes like the devs did.

    Hi lali,
I do not think so. Most likely, the PBs initially made a "curve" system. This also applies to magic.

Example from the correct system for G1:
    I. Klasse Charakter:
    Krieger ★ Magier
    • II. Die Gilde des Charakters:
      0 Sträfling ↓ Sträfling
      1 Novize ↓ Novize
      2 Wächter ↓ Psioniker
      3 Templer ★ Guru
      • III. Die Factions des Charakters:
        Bla-bla-bla...

The classes (mage, fighter, thieve, psionic) should have nothing to do with the guilds.

    The classes are for abilities
    - a mage can use (common, traditional) magic
    - a warrior can fight based on strength and fighting skills
    - a thieve can be a thief based on dexterity and other skills
    - a psionic is using his mind power to control people and matter.

The guilds are for affiliation to any of the camps or groups (like the thieves guild in G2)

It's a bit confusing because in Gothic one camp can have more guilds and one guild can have members with different classes (abilities). For example, the templars from Sect Camp can specialize both in being a warrior and a psionic. It would have made more sense if after serving a while as a novice, one could choose to became either a warrior (templar?), either a psionic (guru?, maybe something less influential than a guru...)

Where you know that from? The psionic, for example. I don't think that there were a "class" called psionic and you could join different guilds as being a psionic. But you were supposed to be a psionic (as a class or "guild", which would be interchangeable here) like you are a templar (as a guild) in the final Gothic.

    The classes are for abilities
    - a mage can use (common, traditional) magic
    - a warrior can fight based on strength and fighting skills
    - a thieve can be a thief based on dexterity and other skills
    - a psionic is using his mind power to control people and matter.
    I understand that.

Well, fact is that there isn't such a thing as 'classes' referenced in the final game anymore, only guilds. So we may think of the guards in the OC and of the mercs in the NC as "fighter classes", but according to the game they are simply two different guilds and you cannot choose a 'class'. The important thing we don't know is: How would choosing such a class have been implemented in the game according to the first ideas? If, for example, the player was expected to choose the class right at the beginning (think of the psionic class) how could he have join any other camp or guild than the sect camp later? And if he was expected to choose to become a psionic later in the actual game, than we can use the term 'class' and guild interchangeable. For me, the idea of classes contradicts the concept of "guilds" in Gothic. I know that the guilds mean some sort of affiliation to a group, but there is no mechanic whatsoever which is limiting or is giving advantages to your character for learning any "class specific" skills etc., which would have been typical for any class-system. The only thing which is limiting you or is giving you advantages concerning skills are the teachers in the game who only teach you if you belong to their group etc. That's not a traditional class system and therefore I think still, that the devs were dropping the probably once planned class-system in favour of the Gothic-specific guild-concept and their idea of immersion.

Forgive me for making mistakes in english here.

    'Wrong', 'bad' - system.

To me this concept of "guilds" in the game, it's just crazy talk.

Otherwise, this is not an RPG, a raggle-taggle.

In a classis rpg (rogue-like) the player would create a character right at the beginning by choosing one of the available classes - mage, thief, warrior, psionic. At this point, no guilds affiliation.

In Gothic, you are not forced to choose a class at the beginning. You can't even choose a name for your nameless character. Later, you can specialize in all classes you want - mage, thief, warrior. Apparently no longer psionic. And at some point you will join a GUILD, regardless your class.

After learning about ATT_WILL, I think that the psionic class was ditched. If ATT_WILL can be restored, than the psionic class should also be restored.

I think MaGoth is right, after serving as a novice in the Sect (Psi) Camp, the player should be able to become a Psioniker, and after that a Guru.

Becoming a Psioniker should prevent him from becoming a Templar.
