Orcs near the hermit in Jharkendar - small spoiler
I just played through the area around the hermit's bridge in Jharkendar. There were 2 orcs there. My memory of previous visits here is that there were 3 orcs, 2 at the fire and 1 on the bridge. I'm thinking maybe one fell into the chasm this time.
Can anyone confirm the number of orcs?
Thank you. This is such a great forum.

3 is correct. 2 at the fire and 1 on the bridge.

Yes, there are normally 3 Orc Warriors around the bridge, but it is quite common for them to fall down. This usually happens when you walk into attack range and they start chasing after you. If you want to avoid this, make a save after reaching the house ruin near the brigde and lure them carefully towards you. And watch out if one of them starts climbing around the brigde, that's the point where they usually fall.

Alternatively, you can meet them from the opposite direction. The path leading to the pirates' hideout, the one you walk alongside Alligator jack, has a ruin on a hill right after the first cave. There's not only loot and some nearby goblins, there's also a serpentine path down the mountain which will lead to you clost to Quarhodron's resting place and thus also into the same valley where the hermit lives. Except you don't have to cross the bridge this time. There's a couple snappers and a shadowbeast you'd have to eliminate (or sneak past) though, I think.

Yes, that would be the best solution - can't believe I never thought of it ... sigh. About those goblins, I only ever found one alive there, and I always find a heavy stick in the road below where they hang out, so at least one must fall off the cliff. I've tried coming at them from both directions, but never got more than one survivor.

True. Though I think it would be possible to avoid the shadowbeast by cutting to the left somewhere there and running off-road up the hill the hermit lives on. One might have to go around the little loop road where the bloodfly and snappers are to do it.

Indeed, just like orcs the goblins are quite prone to falling off the cliffs, though they tend to get eaten by the snappers below, no matter their survival rate (which might make the snappers fall off somewhere, too...). Alternatively, the snappers might make their way up and eat them anyway, though I'm not sure if they are within each others' perception range.
You could try using spells to get them all, snappers, goblins, whatever. A scroll or two of thunderstorm might do the trick, since it kills most basic critters in one fell swoop and is thus nice for clearing out those prone to die via accident. Not that the critters care much either way, but hey, experience points? You can get some from Cronos, as well as Zuris and Salandril, if you haven't already. There's also a firestorm scroll near the goblins, but that'd be overkill I think . You could use it on the orcs though...
The shadowbeast as such is not a problem at all, since you could also sneak past it during the day. The problem are the monsters near it which you'd have to fight "silently", which rarely ever works well, I think. Also, having the beast behind you, ready to wake up and charge your back right when you don't need it kind of limits your movement when approaching the orcs. The hermit won't be of much help, I'm afraid, as even though he's quite the fighter, his damage even on a crit is too low to deal more than minimum damage to the orcs (if the stats on Mondgesänge are correct, which they usually are).

Right, great tip, I'll remember for next time. Somehow, I tend not to think of spells which is stupid of me. I have never used Thunderstorm, shall buy a couple of scrolls asap.

True, it would lock one out of retreating along the road. And running to either side e.g. up the slope where the Grassland Scavengers were, could bring falling off the cliff into play again.
Although I find that usually I can handle a shadowbeast (if I can start to whack it while it's asleep) by the time I get to Jharkendar
