    Hiya guys!

I have to say, Risen was a great game to play in many ways. It had an awesome story to it that I really found captivating. I think this is largely due to my own preference for mythical beings such as gods and titans. I really enjoyed the whole idea of rising temples and nightmarish creatures spawned out of them. When it comes to the titans, I think I visualized something different than what came at the end. Not the humanoid weirdos seen in "Attack on Titan" but probably something like the Titans from the "Heroes of Might and Magic" series.
One thing I really liked about the gameplay was that you started off as a weakling and slowly climbed the ladder up to the final stage, as a Titan Lord. Going that distance is something you really appreciate when you fight off enemies that start off as a challenge but later prove to be easy pickings. I'd say these points would sum up my pros, lets move on to the cons.
There was a lot of confusion in the early stages of the game (Bandit camp and Harbour Town), I think this was mostly caused by the fact that you got tons of quests stacked on top of each other and didn't really know what to do, where to go and how to get there. This caused a lot of frustation for me in the beginning and to be honest, didn't really prove to be such great gameplay, but that's just my opinion
But the biggest con of all I'd say is the combat system. As you level up, you earn learning points, which you can spend on increasing your skills with weapons (as well as strength to give you the ability to use stronger weapons), for every step you get some more dialogue from the trainer about what this next step allows you to do in combat (which I completely ignored every single time - mostly due to the fact that the game contained more dialogue than I could stand). Anyway, I don't think I fully mastered how to use these new abilities until very late in the game, and that was after A LOT of deaths not understanding why I was so easily killed. For example, I didn't know there was such a thing as heavy blows until I was searching for the tombs of the Saurian High Priests (about 85 % through the game). Of course, this can all be considered my own fault for simply being stupid and not listening to my trainers. However, I do think it's important for game designers to consider gamer stupidity as a factor whilst developing their product.
So that is basically what I thought about Risen.
Do you agree or think my judgment was unfair (I'm not a game critic so that is definitely not unlikely), leave your thoughts!
Some part of the game you want to ask me about, go ahead!
Also, I have only played the first game of the Risen series and I would like to continue playing, so please keep spoilers about the second and third game to yourselves!

PS: I know this is spam, which is why I left it at the bottom. But for anyone who might be interested, or just want to show a newtuber some support, feel free to check out my Risen LP on YouTube.

    Hello Chilifreak!

Nice summary of your feelings on Risen 1.

About the fighting system I think you are right, that hearing the dialogues would have been a good idea. It is a main concept of Piranha Bytes, that you get many information through the dialogues. It is well appreciated by most fans, that learning is not done in a menu but in-game. And real learning also means, that someone tells you things you do not know.

About Risen 2+3 be aware that the gameplay has been changed significantly and that liking Risen 1 does not mean that you will also like Risen 2+3.
No one expects the Gnomish Inquisition.

That's great to know actually, thanks! Later in the game I decided to listen more to the dialogue because I realized how important it was (and also needed it for the LP).
I'll bear that in mind when I play the upcoming games. I know that they might differ in gameplay but what I really hope is that they continue the story in a captivating way, because it was definitely the story that I enjoyed the most.

    Yeah. Don't hold your breath.

If you want to go into these games without preconceptions, don't open this spoiler:
    Spoiler:(zum lesen bitte Text markieren)

R2 doesn't really continue the story from R1. Even the subplot about Steelbeard's treasure (which you searched for with Patty in R1) is a only DLC, not part of the main game. But you won't really learn anything new about the disappearance of the gods. And the titans are still there, but only as generic, undefined antagonists. They might as well be alien robot clones from dimension X. They're there and they destroy everything. That's about it.

Also, the entire setting has been changed. While R1 was medieval, R2 will be early renaissance with large sea vessels, firearms, no real magic, etc. And no ingame explanation as to why this happened. PB/DS decided a pirate game would be cool and so they made R2 a game with pretty much cliché pirates. And continuity be damned.

As if you'd make a Lord of the Rings sequel in the style of Pirates of the Caribbean. Just weird.

I hesitate to comment on Risen as I'm not very far into the game. One thing I have noticed with some distress. There is no sign of the breathtaking Gothic skyscapes (I especially am enjoying them in Gothic 2 NotR). A character said something about storms hanging around the island, so I guess the lovely sunrises and sunsets and night skies of Gothic aren't going to feature in this game. If I'm right, it's a pity - the sheer loveliness of the sky is adding so much to my enjoyment of the Gothic games so far.

Well, I see from my previous post that almost 3 years have gone by since I was last playing Risen.

    It's good to be back.

I agree with Chillfreak that it's a very immersive game with a good, strong storyline (wish Gothic 3 had one! I have abandoned it, not sure whether permanently or not).

One thing Risen lacks that added a huge amount to my enjoyment of Gothic 1 and 2 is a database like Mondgesaenge. There are walkthroughs with good info, but it's scattered amidst many documents.

I don't like the combat system much, but that's just because my finger reflexes are so slow that I just struggle to cope. Not the game's fault.

Michael Reuve, I like your screenshot, but am still, as I was all that time ago, finding the gloom of the Risen landscape and skyscape just a little too moody.

Michael, I do hope you are still active on the board, because, having spent more time in the game, I agree that there are moments, fairly regularly, of beautiful skyscapes. Especially at sunset if there is no storm.
