Problem starting Gothic 2 Gold Edition
Hello everyone ,
I just bought Gothic 2 Gold Edition and I'm having trouble getting it to run. The first time I installed, the process went smoothly and it seemed to finish with no problem. After installing the first three discs I inserted the fourth that contains NotR, and that also installed with no hitch.
Now, installing the first time left two icons on my desktop: one for Gothic 2 and another for the add-on. I tried the first icon (Gothic 2) and nothing happened except that my pointer turned into an hourglass. No process (like Gothic2.exe) was running either after double-clicking that icon. So, I tried the second icon (NotR) thinking that was the problem. Exact same issue.
Following the instructions indicated on the JoWood support forum for installation issues with Windows XP SP2, I started my computer in Safe Mode, uninstalled Gothic 2 + NotR using the uninstaller in the game's program folder, and reinserted the first disc to try again. The installation process again went smoothly in Safe Mode. I then restarted the computer to get back out of Safe Mode. This time, only the NotR icon was on the desktop instead of Gothic 2 being there as well. However, double-clicking the icon gave me the same response. Nothing happened, no menu popped up, no Gothic2.exe in the processes section of the task manager; the only thing that happened was the pointer turning to an hour glass.
My next thought was that there was something wrong with the icon. Sure enough, its target was not an exe but a .txt, at C:\Program Files\JoWood\Gothic 2\INSTALL-Addon.txt). Launching the game from the system folder (C:\Program Files\JoWood\Gothic 2\system\gothic2.exe) does the same thing described above, as does changing the target for the icon to the game's exe. Nothing seems to work.
I also thought I should note that the .txt file that the icon was pointing to, INSTALL-Addon.txt, says this at the very bottom:
"Execute Program: C:\Program Files\JoWooD\Gothic II\unwise.exe /A /U C:\Program Files\JoWooD\Gothic II\install.log
File Tree: C:\Program Files\JoWooD\Gothic II\vdfs.dmp
Execute Program: C:\Program Files\JoWooD\Gothic II\delsaves.exe

I'm currently downloading a patch from http://markowicz.info/gothic2.html that is supposed to correct a similar problem. I'll update if that works.
My discs are fine, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling in safe mode, there are no viruses or spyware on my computer, and my discs are brand new and unscratched. The game looks fantastic, and any help you can give me to solve this issue would be well-appreciated.
***EDIT***
The patch from http://markowicz.info/gothic2.html worked perfectly. The game now runs just fine.
Is this fix known to the other users on this board who are also having trouble running Gold Edition?

Hello again -
I came back to Gothic 2 today (planning to make a ranger character) after having it uninstalled for a while.
Unfortunately, this means that upon reinstalling it I found that the site which hosted the aforementioned "Gothic 2 Gold Won't Run" patch (http://markowicz.info/gothic2.html) is down.
So basically, I'm back at square one since I've not been able to find a fix other than this one. Does anyone have the patch that was hosted at http://markowicz.info/gothic2.html or has anyone with the same problem found a way around it?

Thanks Bogdy, I sent my email in a PM
I think that maybe we should find some way to get this patch uploaded somewhere else, maybe on this site, because it appears that a lot of people are having this problem given the number of threads about it on JoWood's forums. Maybe this site could put this fix somewhere in the downloads section?

I cant send it to you (it's too big 13MB)through email. Make a messenger account! It will be faster! Belive me I try but I have a weak connection!

For how long did you wait? Try to wait longer, like 15-20 minutes.

Sounds like the cd-/dvd-rom maybe not reconize the disk correctly. What is the excatly error-message? I would say, try to clean the cd (are there scratches on it?) ... if you can, try with another rom/PC.
