Unfortunate that your DVDs will probably break down long before Steam accounts stop being functional. Oh well, at least you avoid Steam's evil copy protection, nevermind every retail game and their mother uses the damn things.
Heh, that's a good one.
My CDs/DVDs breaking down before steam does.

I got CDs dating back to before you were born, and they're still in near-mint condition.

Mine usually don't make the end of the year, however I kinda treat them with disregard.

they shouldn't like what I don't like, let alone buy where I don't.

Heard of backup DVDs? Only in the US do they forbid that. Hell, I can make backups on the harddrive of my computers. The thing with the DVD is that for whatever reason, once you buy the DVD version, whoever made the DVD can't stop you from playing the game. But if for whatever reason you piss off Steam (it could be as easy as a failed transaction), it will stop you from playing ALL your Steam games.
Backup protected DVDs? How is that different from backing up Steam games?
(it could be as easy as a failed transaction),
Lies. Have you even failed a transaction on Steam or seen that happen? No? I have, countless times, and my account is fucking fine.
Who are you talking about? GOG? Or a publisher who uses something like SolidShield (instead of potentially harmful stuff like Tages)? Then yes, Valve is about as evil as Microsoft.
What does Valve have to do with Tages?

I'm sure they've seen some heavy usage. In any case, I am 21 and expect Steam to be around when I'm 42.

Your thought is accurate. My phrasing was correct.

Perhaps the DVDs in question aren't that protected and the law permits a backup copy?

Interesting. What about chargebacks? The initial transaction succeeds but then whatever you used to transact the money issues a chargeback? What happens then? I heard of chaps getting their entire locked because of that.

You should read what you quoted again.

Oh, unprotected DVDs? I guess some exist. So do not-so-secure Steam games.

Your account is essentially banned from the Steam Store, but not from your own game library.
I heard of chaps getting their entire locked because of that.
I think it used to be like that. I guess they realized being total scumfucks about it isn't gonna help anyone.

Anyhow, anyone know how mod-friendly the steam versions are?

You mean the Steam Workshop? I guess we'll ask Lar about that.

Screw the steam workshop.
I meant regular mods.
Like S.M.R.T.E.R. Pripyat and Atmosfear.
Does steam give any problems when trying to run those?

Tried lots of mods on all STALKER games. Had no problems whatsoever so far.
