Gothic-like games
Are there any other games that you know of that come close to the Gothic experience? Except The Elder Scrolls series, of course.

Honestly dunno. I think that Ultima IX resembles Gothic when i look at the screenshots but i didn't actually played it.
Besides that...i have no idea.

Arx Fatalis maybe. A great game, by the way.
It is rather hard to say, because even if the Gothics do nothing special, they mix it in a rather rare way. It would be simpler to say what part of the Gothics you enjoy, so we can tell you wich other games do it well.
-
Other RPG's of course, like Fable, Kotor or Vamipre.

I can't say that Arx Fatalis is like Gothic at all.
What I didn't like was that all the game is in the dungeons IMO very boring instead Gothic has great nature inviroment and dungeons too

Diablo? Dungeon Siege? Prince of Persia? These are not really like Gothic, but there are RPGs too from my knowledge...
EDIT: NeverWinter Night? (or sth liek that)

Just chill...

Well, there aren`t games like Gothic. Gothic is unique. There are, however, games that resemble some of Gothic`s elements, but never the atmo and parts that made it our favorite game.
I cannot give an example, except Fable, but this one`s a rather childish and very easy game.

Actually, about Arx Fatalis, it handles the underground aspect very well. I hated underground stuff before, and this game reconciliated me with it.
If I used it to say "somehow like Gothic", it is for the :
- possibility to go explore the world at any point
- possibility to do some side quest for a rather long time
- superb sound design, real sense of immersion (yeah, teh eevol i-word), immersion reinforced by :
- inertia of the character, you do not move like a free cam, and yes it is important
- your character has a voice and a personality
- there are important and recurrent side characters
What Arx doesn't do compared to Gothic :
- choices in the main quest, except the four endings
- exteriors (I thought there would be some, since you have a key to the gate, but there is no way not to die when you open it)
- big breathing cities
I have also heard that the english voice-acting is great. Hey, not a surprise here, it is a french game after all, and these guys know how to localize properly.
The magic system is surprising, and works quite well, after you have got used to it.
The interface is very old-school and the learning curve ungrateful, like Gothic, so expect to suffer a bit before really loving the game.

There are alot of simular games out their, but the differ in what I consider to be the largest areas, atmosphere. So many games are the same, but become completely different because of atmosphere.
I cannot think of any game with the awesome and dark atmosphere of Gothic. Some may come close (as mentioned Fable comes close I think in the atmosphere department anyway.)
Fable aside, I cannot think of any other RPG's with that dark sort of atmosphere.
What about Thief? (never really played it, heard alot about it, it sounds like a darker world.)

Well, the only real game that truly has this (save two points) would be Fallout.
After you exit the cave you begin in, you can really travel anywhere.
Some of characters have, when talked to, an animated face which shows his/her disposition towards you. And all (of the ones with a face) have their own voice. (And that for a game from 1997)

It's a rather old game...1995 or so iirc.

Well that won't be in G3. And even in G2 and 1 some areas like Orc Land were totaly out of limits because of the difficulty.

Well honestly i played Fable and it doesn;t even resemble to Gothic. The graphics are way too shiny, the story is ver linear, repeating areas, etc
And absolutely you don't have that feeling that the world is like a real one. You just go back and forth

Actually I would have to agree, I found some 'darker' elements to Fable (you can be evil, sacrifice inocents, kill you friend, and you little sister was tortured and had her eyes plucked out) but it is much simpler and childlike of a game compared to Gothic, with no where near as much freedom.

Ha, I loved that game (I am a Viking, so go figure). Kindof dark, running around hacking everything apart with oversized Axes, Warhammers and swords. But it is not a roleplaying game at all, it is a first person shooter, but with medieval weapons instead of guns, with some puzzles and platform jumping scenes thrown in for good measure. Very linear, as you would expect from a FPS. This game crossed my mind too, but I think anybody playing it expecting a roleplaying game would be let down.

Looks cool,... old but cool, i never played any Ultima, but from the look (except some colors) it's coming close to a gothic-look.
Anyone around who played it and can enlighten us about gameplay, look and feel??
