    Questions

Note: I'm going to play Gothic 3 for the first time on hardest difficulty with Alternative Balancing and Alternative A.I. I want to play a game in good way (Innos, I believe).

Hello everyone! I have a few questions:
    - which spell is the best: Fireball, Ice lance or Lightning bolt?,
    - is it worth to learn Open locks spell? Or learn Pick difficult locks and carrying Open locks scroll to open hardest locks? Does Open locks spell opens all of chests?,
    - I want to have pure mage - is it worth do learn Staff fighting?,
    - I'm going to gather Stone tablets to increase Ancient knowlegde. But I've heard that above 200 Ancient knowledge hero must spend more Learning points - so is it worth to keep these tablets for later use (above 200 AK)?,
    - is it worth to spend valuable points on Alchemy?

Here is screenshot for help (I hope that Polish language won't be a problem): http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/1...1612205738.jpg

Thank you very much for your answers and I will appreciate to hear more advices for new player (especially for a mage).

Edit.: I've learnt Thieving on 30 and I'm going to regret these spent Learning points. Also I used Stone tablets to increase Ancient knowlegde to 100. I'm gathering these tablets now.
I think that I will start a new game and: get Learn quickly at level 1, after that - saving the tablets for later use. And I won't spend any points on Thieving.

I think Fireball and Lightning Bolt are pretty much the same, so your decision should be based on whether you want to specialise on Innos or Beliar magic. (Fireball may transmit a burn effect, but if so, it's negligible, really.) Ice Lance is not so good for a pure mage: although it freezes, a frozen opponent can't be hit again by Ice Lance. Thus it is better for a battlemage who wants to even the odds.

Open Locks is better than Pick Impossible Locks if you have the 180 mana pool for it, which you should. However, don't learn either in that case; just use the scrolls, you'll get more scrolls than impossible chests, and even if you miss one, you only lose the contents of an average Metal Chest (the typical difficult one) plus 250-500 gold. Open Locks opens every chest though that doesn't need a key.

What weapon you want to use is a matter of preference for the most part, but staves are the best for mages, with their lower STR requirements and AK requirements in their place, and the perks like "Magical staff" that can convert HP damage into mana damage.

I remember the AK limit for 1 point/LP to be 250, that's the limit on the other stats anyway. Also, yes, if you think you're ever going to reach that AK then you oughta save all the tablets.

Don't spend points on Alchemy, just read the books on the bookstands in every city. You can get 60 (the requirement for permanent potions) just from those.

Yeah, if it's early enough you can start a new game, although it won't matter much in the long run.

Thanks, you've helped me a lot.

I've heard that if you have higher level of Ancient knowledge you're dealing more spell damage. Also I've heard that difference between 300 and 500 Ancient knowlegde isn't big, because mage is (probably) very powerful even if he has 300 points in Ancient knowledge.

And I want to have Mana regeneration in the earliest possible stadium of hero's level. As you probably know, Mana regeneration needs 200 points of Learning points.
So - if difference isn't big between 300 and 500 points of Ancient knowledge - can I save some (15 for example) Stone tablets for later use and reading all others? Isn't better?

About permanent potions - is it worth to make them?

Also, my friend said that it's worth to do quest "Where is the Guru?" or something like that. He said that the rewards from thic quest are awesome. How about you? Do you know something about this quest?

Just train AK to 250 first, I say; you will be able to get enough LPs for that in the midgame.

Permanent potions are worth making if you do things right. I think that it costs 16 LPs to learn the skill for it and all its prerequisites, plus any points you have to invest into alchemy if you can't find all the bookstands. One strength or hunting potion is worth 3 stat points, minus the one dragonroot you use up for it, so effectively you get 2 extra stat points - which are worth 4 learning points past the limit of 250 stat points, so you'll need to make 5 such potions to profit with no alchemy point investment, or 4 to break even. Life, endurance and mana potions give 8-2=6 extra stat points, similarly, and I don't think there is a limit for those (or I just haven't reached it yet), so you'll get 1,5 extra LPs for every potion. Not so good, but if you can make 11 of them, you'll still profit. (Good luck finding 11 king's sorrels!) To sum up, strength and hunting potions are worth making, while the others not so much, only with leftover king's sorrels after you used up all the dragonroots or goblin berries.

I don't know about that Guru quest, though I've heard of it.

Thank you very much for answers! Well, I don't think that I will be interested in alchemy. It's too much work for the beginning. Maybe later...
I will concetrate in Innos magic.

Once again thank you very much for helping me! And I'm waiting for more advices from other players (from you too).
