Hi guys, this is my first post in these forums and I just wanna say it's an honor to be here, since I'm a big big fan of Gothic 1 & 2 and I don't think I will ever stop playing them.

I hope I don't come off as a whiny bitch, but I am really feeling as such.

After about 2 years of not being able to play Gothic due to problems with my graphics card (nVidia), today I finally managed to install Gothic 1 and play it normally on my computer!

I reached level 5 and became a Shadow and exited the game. I went to sleep for a while and so did my computer (sleep mode), and when I got back to it, it said i need to change some "filename" to "filename1" in order for a program to work correctly (i really can't remember the filename and have no clue how to go back to that error message or trace the file, sorry), I clicked "never show me this message again", and tryed running Gothic, but the game would not launch and I would only see it in the Processes section in my task manager.

After trying to restart my computer, shut down and turn on my computer & uninstalling the game and re-installing it multiple times, I finally clicked "Help & support" in my start menu and restored my computer to the state it was 3 days ago. After I did that, I got the same message again (please rename "filename" to "filename1") and this time I clicked "Rename".

My computer renamed it, but still exactly the same problem.

I also looked at many other threads online, including here, and tryed shutting down all the programs on my computer (including in task manager) but that hasn't worked for me either.

I will really appreciate some help for this problem, as I am eager than ever to finish this game about 6 times with different class/camp combinations before moving on to Gothic 2, and I am sorry for the long and confusing story, I just hope I got all the details in.

I am using Windows 7 x64-bit, and a nVidia GTX 260 graphics card, any more info you need to know, just ask.

Man you should know that if you put SOME programms in sleep mode they probably will have some problems .... I suggest to reinstall you'r windows .... OR try to run the game as a administrator....

PS : You can earn some money and buy a better video card man .... GTX series sucks .... I bet you want to enjoy Gothic 3 or 4

Actually I can't stand Gothic 3 & 4, I preffer Risen by far. I think they have almost nothing to do with the original Gothic games as far as gameplay style goes.

And I don't think my computer was in sleep mode, it just went to that automatic power saving mode where i need to click a button and it goes back to my logon screen, after being on screensaver for a while. (sorry for being a big computer noob and not knowing the correct terminology)
and Gothic was closed before I left my computer.

While I was waiting for an answer though, I inquired about the file that my computer prompted me to rename and it was "C:/Program.RPT" and it wanted me to change it to "C:/Program1.RPT". (now it is C:/Program1.RPT)

Ever since then Gothic won't work, and I also tryed running it as Administrator with no luck.

Have you tried to run it in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3)?

Yes, both in SP3 & SP2. The thing is that it worked fine earlier today, and all of a sudden it became just a process.

Man that is the logout window .... if you went to logout window when the game was active it should probably 'end' but it still appears like on ...

no dude it was more than that...
but anyway now the game works all of a sudden!
still having a small problem though with pictures inside the game of items, and also the gothic.exe thumbnail isnt appearing anymore.
anyone know what might cause this?

Download best upgrades for you video card ....

I don't think updating his graphic drivers will fix the problem he is having with the game.

My problem in-game is that I don't see the picture of certain items in my inventory, most importantly the Ore Nugget's picture...some pictures are always blank while some are blank and appear as I hover over them, and the rest are just normal. I tried repairing the installation and re-installing but it hasn't worked.

you need to kill the process rundll32 before launching the game, i don't remember exactly how, in order to start the game if it malfunctions again
larisa had some launcher created for gothic especially you could search for it on the forum

i don't think you can fix the issue with the items but i am not sure

Well for start,if you have problems in all videogames,the problem is on your side so you should update g. drivers for example. If the problem is only in Gothic game,try to reinstall it for start.

My G. Drivers are updated to the max...and like I said i tryed reinstalling the game, no success.

This problem isn't as crucial as the first one I had...but still a bummer not to see my inventory items properly.

Any help would be appreciated.
