@Warstrike: damn, tell me about it. I did like Arcania as a stand-alone game but the fact that it is the sequel to Gothic? The thought isn't exactly charming if you know what I'm saying. Arcania was not bad though, it was fun to play through once or twice. Shame it wasn't a separate game.

On a marketing standpoint, it probably should not have been a Gothic game.

JoWood has produced several good games from good companies in the past, but, unfortunately,they've made some critical marketing errors within the last few years and they got what was coming.

If you boil Gothic (and related games) down to its essence, it's about getting/acheiving quests and leveling in your desired fighting manner. The rest of the stuff are for flavor, immersion, etc. Playing the 6 Gothic/Risen games as a mage, I found them to be only a little different. Standing some distance away from an orc/lizard as a mage with a fireball produced a very similar experience in all 6 games. To me, what differentiated the games was the geography ("world") and that's why I like G3 best.

2. You can say whatever you want, but it is Gothic-in-name after all, and as that, it has to be compared to the other games of the series.
And by doing that, it fails.
No way out of that.
It is Jowoods/Spellbounds fault that they wanted to create a game with the name of game-series that already exists, so they have to deal with the criticism.
