Archiv verlassen und diese Seite im Standarddesign anzeigen : [Announcement] new texture mod for Gothic 1 in progress
As some of you already know, I am working on a mod that replaces the textures of Gothic 1. I create new textures which much higher resolution on the base of G2-textures and others.
The main goal is that Gothic looks much more beautyful. It should not look like Gothic 2. The condition is that the look and feel (just the atmosphere) remain the same but more intensive.
I have almost 50% ready. I hope that I can start a beta-test within 1 month. The main problem is to create the special textures for temples, swamp camp and the old camp (Walls, ornaments). I have to work very accurate otherwise the textures would not fit optimal.
It's planned to let the user choice if you want's to install it as a patch (then works with every other modification) or as a mod (selected by starting from the GothicStarter).
Some screenshots:

Hy Freddy. Like i said before this is a great project. I hope that you will finish this so we can all enjoy your patch/mod.
From my point of view you want to know opinions if this should be a mod or a patch? That could be solved through a poll if you want to.
Now for my opinion :) . Seeing that this project will replace all textures i think that it can be considered as a patch.
But there is a problem i think(correct me if i'm wrong). If a player installs it as a patch won't the other mods wich have extra textures(with gothic 1 look) disturb the atmosphere of the game(this will result in a mod with textures wich have a feeling of g2, made by you, combined with textures with the feeling of g1 created by the modders)? This is the only thing that i see wich could make the creation as a patch undesirable.
If you already solve this problem or if you don't think that the problem exists(i might be wrong ) then i don't see any reason why you shouldn't create this as a patch.
PS : If the patch will have an unninstaler(creating a backup or renaming the "old" textures) then you will have all my aplause and cheers. :D
Great work Freddy. I like the new textures, and the idea that you want to make Gothic look more good, but what about that other guy that makes a graphic mod (bandit:confused: ) ? Are you working with him or alone ?
First: Thanks. I'm glad that you like my work. :)
I announced it now because the shown places are almost final (for good screenshots) and there are often questions about a mod that gives G1 better graphics.
@MikeL: I heard that there will be a reissue of the international version of Gothic 1 at a fair price. Buy it then.
@rockfest:
The difference between a patch and a mod is the file-extension. :D
Move the file "texture.mod" (for example) from ..\gothic\data\modvdf\ to ..\gothic\data\ and rename it to "texture.vdf", then you got a patch. This could do a program too.
My plan is to give a choicebox when installing the mod:
Do you want to install
[X] as a patch
[ ] as a modification
and a small description. I hope that I'll manage to create such an installer-script. Of course there will be an uninstaller.;)
Always the "youngest" file will get active. So the old textures won't be deleted.
The new textures are named similar to the old ones. If there is mod which altered these too they would not get active.
I don't want to create a Gothic 2-feeling. ;)
To show what I'm doing exactly: the texture "ocodwaringai.tga" old and my creation in original size (http://www.metger.net/mod/alteslager_wand.jpg)
@rekinu:
The project from bandit is older. He works in a very different way. He does not replace textures like I do. He gives every polygon a new texture by hand. This takes a long time and somestimes it's very boring. He also replaces trees and sets new objects. He uses the textures from "Night of the Raven". The valley of mines will have the look from Jharkendar - just the Gothic 2-atmosphere. The mod also cannot be combined with other mods because the worlds are delivered too.
This is exactly the opposite goal from my mod. Don't understand me wrong, I will like to play bandit's mod. But the main goal of my mod is to retain the feeling of Gothic 1. Bandit wants to create Gothic 2-feeling.
We don't work together, but I will make the offer that he can use some of my textures if needed.
There will be at least one great mod (Kampf um die Bruderschaft (Gothic 2 DNdR) (http://www.blackstar-studios.de)) which will use my textures. It saves a lot of work because the team must not re-texture the valley.

Those screens are really looking great! :A
I was already thinking of play the gothic-series once more right from the beginning (g1) (the last whole game-through is a time ago for me), but as i heard of your mod, i decided to wait till it´s finished, and now i see, it was a good decision! :)
Ok, I understand now Freddy, and I agree with you. I watched some of bandit_one's videos with the mod, and I taught that it looks like gothic 2 too much. It looks good but it does not fit Gothic1. So I think your ideea is really great! keep up the good work ;)
@Werner
I'll try to play all 3 games, from start to end too. :D (G1, Notr, G3) ;)
That's exactly the thing I've been waiting for, for a long time. Thanks for that! And good luck in finishing the mod!

I hope that I'll manage to create such an installer-script.You can count on the WoG community - there are enough guys with experience in creating foolsafe setup scripts :D

It's really good idea for mod, and it looks great. I like that it keeps old atmosphere. But replacing some trees (as does bandit) is good too, coz trees' meshes in G1 don't look very good.

Good work Freedy ;)
I'm looking forward to this :)

Thank you very much. NSIS scripts are causing me headaches. :)
@Deadly Arrow:
If I would place new trees I would have to include the world. This would mean that it would not be compatible to other mods. I would have to make new trees too, because the Gothic 2-Trees does not fit the atmosphere of G1.
Fortunately changing the textures of the trees helped much.

Some new infos about it:
- At minimum the release takes another month, because he enhanced the project. (He exchanges more textures than expected in the beginning.)
- The project will be released as a patch only.
- Another patch will be released, based on this project, which exchanges those textures in g2 which were taken from g1.
Some specifications:
- In g1 there are ca. 500 leveltextures, ca. 400 of them will be exchanged.
- Right now there are 250 textures ready, 15 not perfectly finished.
- The patch has yet a file-size of 70 MB (25 MB packed).
Edit: The first 2 screens are from the mod "Piratenleben".
Nice work, Freddy. Very nice work!
However, I'm a bit confused. I thought this project is going to give Gothic 1 a graphical revamp. Your first two screens today feature stone sentinels I only knew from Gothic 2 NTOR.

I really like this mod. Great work Freddy cant wait to test it:)
I'm very sorry. I wanted to post here - but had some trouble and little time.
Thanks, Werner. :)
Yes, the first screens are from "Piratenleben". The mod uses some parts from Gothic 1. I made the the screens to show that it works with G2 too. Some textures will be delivered with the patch für PL.
I hope that the english translation for this mod will be ready then.
NicoDE (thank you very much! :)) wrote an installer script that sets the time stamp of the patch shortly after the last official patch. This prevents problems with other modifications. Because of this there's no need to publish it as a modification (an uninstaller will be included ;)). The patch will work with every Gothic 1-version.
I'm sorry that it takes much longer as planned, but I want to make it as best as I can. Furthermore I have much work with other modifications and the "Real Life" (damned ;)).
Thank you all for your great support. :dup:

That's right. ;)
I decided to redesign some textures later and do not start a beta test. When there are places where are old textures or the new ones do not fit it would be nice when I will get screens from it.
This spares time and you can play it sooner.
I'm not really happy with some textures - but they even look much better than the originals. So, it can be fixed later. ;)
There will be an addon like NotR for Gothic 1. It's Darken Brood (http://www.dunklebrut.de/eng/). But it needs still a lot of work to be completed.

Let's don't get things upside down:
- Chromanin will be a mod
- Dark Breed will be another mod
- Freddy's "texture mod" will be not a mod but a patch, so it's possible to use it for any mod as long as the mods (modifications ^^) don't come along with own textures, which would "overwrite" the patched ones.

Oh Damn Damn Damn. I have also replaced the textures in Gothic 1, with photorealistic textures. I did this in about a week. (I'm on vacation). I did this without knowing there was a gothic community that might be doing it as well! Please contact me and perhaps we can collaborate some, if photorealistic, high res textures sound good to you, maybe you have textures that are better than mine (the art stuff?), and maybe i have textures that are better than yours? Let me know. (working hard to do something someone else might already have done feels like a kind of waste).

If it don't fit then perhaps you do an own patch which brings a different atmosphere. :)

Nico already answered. But to be more precise: Replacing only the textures makes the patch 100% compatible. If I would include worlds or new scripts they only would work under some circumstances with older savegames or mods.

Freddy i have question about texture patches. Is it working also if i have low detail or something like that.
Yes, it works. Even on position 3 it looks better than the original Gothic textures. But this doesn't make much sense. If your computer has performance problems with original Gothic you shouldn't install the patch, because the higher resolution of the textures need more performance (and surely more RAM).

Your textures look exactly like the originals, just with finer detail and resolution, etc. I was thinking same atmosphere meant, replacing rocks with rocks and mud with mud, which is what I did (and tweaking colors, etc, to at least resemble the original). So, I'm definitely going to want to use your textures when you're done with them, because I think playing the game with the original feel would be ideal.
Also, you asked, Have I replaced all the textures, only the world textures (not the monsters or people) and of those, I haven't yet gotten to the ork_* lands or the ot_* orc tomb textures, and I need people to beta test them, because my 21" perfect flat CRT monitor might make them look different than other kinds of monitors. I'm trying to find a way to host them, because the file is large. I'll post screenshots as soon as I can get them up (I just started summer school, been busy for the last few days). But, when I finish that, I'd be glad to help beta test yours, or if you like, I'm pretty proficient with GIMP!
ich wollte mal nicht nerven aber fragen wie weit du mit dem grafik-patch für gothic bist. finde ich übrigens eine super idee von dir! kannst uns ja mal den stand der dinge mitteilen.
Edit:
wrong forum. i have to translate now. hey freddy! i did not mean to get on your nerves, but i would like to know how far you are with the graphic patch for gothic. i really like your idea to do that. i would appreciate it if you could tell us how far you are.

The patch pauses for a moment. I have to do some important things for Khorana. I still have to do:
- some textures for the New Camp (Yes! After several tries I made good drafts for the walls of the huts! :))
- textures for the huts of the swamp camp
- 50 % of the temple textures
- some textures for objects

I'm very sorry. I didn't see this. The hosting is no problem. How big is the archive? Split it into 100 MB-volumes and upload it at http://www.rapidshare.de and write a PN to me or to another moderator. We will take a look and WoG will host it.
I can't await to see some screens from you textures. :)
Help would be nice. :) I think I will not do a real betatest. When I finished, I will upload it. After getting (I hope ;)) the feedback, I will alter some things and put new ones when I have the time to do.

A lot of time has passed, any progress ? And when will it be finished ?
After a long time - a sign of life! :p
At the moment I work very hard at the modification Khorana. So I can`t do much for the textures patch. But many Gothic fans want to play Gothic 1 before starting with Gothic 3. To give you a chance to play Gothic 1 with new textures I decided to release a beta version of my patch next weekend (friday evening I hope).
I hate betas (*grrrr* ;)) and this release will be a great exception. After finishing the prologue for Khorana I will finish the patch.
What will the patch contain?
- The complete surface including the 3 camps. Some textures may not be final.
- Most mine texture
- some temple textures
- some textures for objects (tables for example)
The patch will have the size of 80 MB (installer about 30 MB) and contains about 300 new textures.
As a little appetizer (:D) a new screen (http://www.metger.net/mod/texturenmod029.jpg).

OOOOOOOOOOO, sounds and looks great. I can't wait to see it, I'll have to get out the Gothic 1 disc and play it again with your new patch. I'm looking forward to the beta test version.
wow, THAT's an appetizer :) I knew that the texture patch will be good. But that's much better than I thought. I will be the first one who will download the patch! Well, if not the first maybe one of the first 10 or something like that :D

If u really want gothic 1 to look better wthen why not wait for g3 to come and replace the g1 textures with g3's is that possible?
nah,that wlouden't be the G1 we know
nah,that wlouden't be the G1 we know
That's my opinion too.
A little gift for those who follow this thread:
The beta of my patch is ready for download: http://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/index.php?go=downloads&file_id=247
Texturpatch 0.8
Note: This is a beta version. Most of the temple textures and some others are missing (you will see the old ones). Some textures may not be final.
You must not start a new game to play with the patch.
Worlds Patch
This is a little bonus:
- ugly swamp portal removed
- texture at the water in near Gravo fixed (Old Camp)
- Top of the woods fixed (there was only a green plain)
- some trees planted left of the temple at the swamp camp
You'll have to start a new game to use this patch.
Both patches are compatible to modifications. The worlds patch will not be loaded if a mod comes with it's own world.
I like to thank NicoDE for the installer of the textures patch, Caphalor for the installer of the worlds patch and Scythe for removing the swamp portal.
Tomorrow I will write a nice release thread. Today I am too tired. ;)
yeeeeeeeeeeeee,thx Freddy!!!!gona try it now!

[...]You'll have to start a new game to use this patch.
It is certainly not intended but I suspect a little mixup with the English language here. ;)
I must not (http://www.dict.cc/?s=must+not) start a new game to play with the patch? Well, eventually, I will have to start a new game and then what? Surely, this patch is not exclusively for old savegames only.
The other sentence, however, makes it a must to start a new game when using this patch? Does it mean, we cannot use old savegames with the patch?
It's a contradiction. Please elaborate. :)

It's quite simple, if you wanna use the texture-patch, install it and play as you like, means, you can start a new game, or you can use an old save.
If you wanna use the worldpatch, you must start a new game, you cannot use an oldsave with it.
mmmm.... will be very nice, but i dont have G1
But i will buy soon and finish G1/2/Addon before G3 :D
u didn't play G1,2?!hurry man!:p
man, what wloud i do to forget G1,g2 addon and play them again!ohhhhhh
