G2 Gold problem - black screen and music

Bought Gothic 2 Gold from Gog and having trouble. Game plays 2 opening logo vids then goes to black screen and music. That's it. Sometimes when I hit ctrl alt del it displays opening video of the game with the sound in a smaller window but other background windows fade in and out and it looks terrible. It also never gets to the main menu or gameplay. I've tried many things, both on gog threads and here. Forgive me for I am terribly ignorant concerning this type of thing and there were a few things on the technical faq that I didn't understand how to do.

All drivers up to date. Latest directx with some pack thing that has previous ones as well.

I also patched the game with 2.1 community (I'm thinking it's probably for win 7 but I'm not sure) and have tried to delete all the bits and pieces after uninstalling the game and used ccleaner as well and am no longer able to install 2.1. Right now I have 1.0 installed. I also tried the german 2.6 but that would not install. When I did have 2.1 installed I had an error that said something about my video card, memory problem I think, but I don't remember now.

When installing the community patch, you did not accidently tick the Windows 7 NVidia fix, did you? Because that might cause problems. It's redundant anyway because NV has fixed the problem months ago.

I downloaded detonator 44.03 and now it works fine. I still need to figure out the patch thing though, but I will read through the faq here and try to figure it out. I don't believe I ever ticked a windows 7 nvidia fix.

Hey there.

My answer might look complicated, but believe me it's not. ;)

1. Did you install the game in C:\Program Files\<etc>? If so, reinstall the game in another location, for example D:\Games\G2, otherwise skip to step 2.
2. Community patch 2.10 installer comes with at installation problem: it gives you an error about no being complete.
In order to make it work, you need to follow these steps:
a. Start - regedit, from there find this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IronKeep Studios. Right click on IronKeep Studios folder and Delete it.
b. Do a clean reinstall of the game, without applying any patches and see if it works. Changing Video Scale to 0 might help, but I really doubt it, since it's only a Vista / Win 7 problem as far as I know.
c. If the game runs, leave it like this, if not, try applying directly ICP patch 2.10, followinf these steps:
- first, create this path manually: C:\Program Files\JoWooD Productions Software AG\Gothic II Gold\ICP\
- then run patch installer.
- it should install correctly this time.
- upon installing the patch DO NOT select "Fix" option, only "English text correction" or something like that.
3. Try running it in Win XP SP 2 compatibility, as SP3 is known for it's buggy content. In case you need administrative rights, ricght click on gothic2.exe and select Run as... then chose Administrator <or whatever user is admin on your computer>.
4. Reinstall DirectX.

If all else fails, I can provide you with my Gothic2.exe file or whole System directory <updated with ICP patch 2.10>, and see if it works. Just give me a PM.

Oh, I'm glad you made it work. See my post for installing ICP 2.10 patch, if you feel like installing it.

You should know that NVIDIA driver v44.03 too old, but the latest drivers not supporting obsolete GeForce FX Series videocards. The last NVIDIA driver which supports your videocard is ForceWare v175.19.

Yeah I know the driver is old, but it's the only one that works. All other drivers, including the latest, do not work whatsoever, just a black screen and music. I also got 2.1 to work after installing 1.0 but there was an error message about textures so I just scrapped it and put 1.0 back on because at this point I just want to play the damn thing already.

well amazingly my gothic works fine now too :D. My kaspersky internet security 2011 was blocking the game so I changed it, try this way out... you will not need any addon programs like now...
