I just bought and downloaded Gothic 3; and downloaded and applied 1.74 patch. Before the patch, the floating text appeared where it was supposed to - ie above things you could interact with and there was audio - also in English.

After the patch, the floating text is gone and the ambient english is gone as well. I can still talk to the characters in English but "high-lighting" anything is not working - whether a dead body, chest, NPC, item on ground.

I see in the original Gothic 3 folder ini where the languages are listed - and mine say English as they should. However, the patch takes presidence over the original and that is the problem.

I don't know how to access the patch files to change the language / audio to English.

If you help, please be very specific how to navigate to the correct location to do this - ie correct file location. Assume I'm an idiot - my wife does .... :dnuhr:

Check also (with notepad or another text editor) My Documents\gothic3\UserOptions.ini for

VoiceLanguage=English
SubtitleLanguage=English
Subtitle=true

If English is set to something else, change it. It's possible your Regional settings or OS language is not English, that's why the patch got confused.

Usually Community Patch installer don't uses the regional settings. I think that answer about OS and game languages from RoiDanton may be useful:

@ Brian Nordin:
Can you show us your OS language and contents of following ini files before and after CP installation:

For example, in EFIGS version (which includes English, French, Italian, German and Spanish languages) ini files should be looks like these:
ge3.ini:

Do you have a Czech OS?

Wyrd

I am having the same problem. I hear spoken English audio, but I no longer have the text boxes showing what NPCs are saying and I no longer have names appearing over targets, as I did before installing the patch. This makes telling what you are targetting and determining what is interactive in the environment extremely difficult. I installed the patch because playing the game was so glitchy before, but if I cannot turn those labels back on I will have to uninstall and reinstall the program.

Comparing my files to the ones posted above shows no discernible differences. I am using windows Vista(not by choice, I assure you).

edit: I did find one difference other than the fact that I have my details options set to medium. in User Options

ExtendedContent=true
Difficulty=Medium
AIMode=true
[Options.Audio]
MasterVolume=255
VoiceVolume=255
MusicVolume=54
FXVolume=149
AmbientVolume=202
Speaker=2
VoiceLanguage=English
SubtitleLanguage=English
Subtitle=false

I have Subtitle=true
My English audio works, so maybe changing this would help you. I still don't have text boxes for NPCs or labels for targets.

Edit the second: I found a solution to the missing labels. By replacing the Gothic3.ttf file installed by the update with the original file, I now have focus labels for my targets. It has, however, caused the game to start running very slowly, and I don't have dialogue boxes for the NPCs. I can see the options for what I want my character to say, but I rather preferred having the speech where I could read it as well as hear it. I'm going to try resetting my computer, then starting a new game to see if the files integrate better and the game runs smoother with the correct options restored. If I do not follow up this edit, then it worked for me.

Can you tell me specifically how you replace the files in the updates with the files in the patch - step by step please.... Thank you - sounds promising!

It mostly worked. I now have some lines of dialogue not being spoken, but I have my targetting labels back, the game is running at about the speed it did before the patch, and I can at least see what they are supposed to be saying even when they aren't actually saying it.

I originally made a copy of my Gotic3.ttf file because the patch had trouble overwriting it, and I am glad that I did. I moved the altered version to a different folder(in case this didn't work), moved the old version back into the base Gothic3 directory, and tried the game again. Loading an existing file was very slow and glitchy, but restarting my computer and then the game cleared whatever the problem was. By restarting the game, I mean that I started an entirely new game, as changing some of the files can cause problems with existing save games, at least according to the support information I could dig up.

If you don't have a copy of that file, I would be willing to email it to you. It is 440 Kb, so Hotmail should let me send it. Just pm me with your email address. If this is not satisfactory, you will have to find a copy of the file elsewhere. You could get it, for example, by uninstalling and then reinstalling Gothic 3, then making a copy of that file before applying the patch. I don't know how paranoid you are about internet security. I swear that I am not and have never been a spammer, and have no intention of selling/giving your email address to others.

Perhaps try this (http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?p=9622354&#post9622354). It might work for you.

Where do I insert the clean dff file? Is there a way to get into the 1.74 patch file like you can do with the original Gothic file - and perhaps manipulate the language there?

Also, HOW do I insert the clean dff file? What folder does it go to? The Gothic folder itself or somewhere else?

Thanks.

By the way, if I set subtitles to "true" - I have English subtitles. The voices are in English. What I don't have is the floating text that allows you to interact with everything - without that, the game really is unplayable as that's the only way one can tell if an item can be interacted with. That's what I need to fix.

One last question - does it matter where you downloaded the 1.74 patch from? Was there different versions regarding languages? I downloaded my version from Atomic Gaming -

Larissa -

I tried your new 47Kb font file - pulled the old one out of the Gothic file and dragged your new one into the same place. No luck. I still don't have the floating text that allows you to interact with anything.

I wonder if the creaters of patch 1.74 know why this would happen?

Thanks -

Brian

Well, my font advice was for Wyrd.

I would guess not (assuming the file is not corrupt or something like that), afaik there's only one version of the patch that is for all languages.

I tried your font as well, and it did not work. I am still willing to email the file I am using and have been using all day, since it brought the game back up to playable levels. It is kind of dull replaying the bits I had already done, but that's life.

To replace the Gothic3.ttf file, you need to move it out of the Gothic3 folder. As long as it is in the folder, your computer considers it associated with Gothic 3 and will give you an error if you try to do anything to it. Once that file is missing from the folder and there is no overwrite issue, you can copy or move a different Gothic3.ttf file into the base Gothic 3 folder. It worked for me, it may work for you, though I make no guarantees.

Thank you for helping me solve this dilema.

Larissa provided a cleaned version of the Gothic font - I removed the old one - replaced it with the new one - and bingo! Everything now works as it should.

Now: a complete step-by-step how to....

1). right click gothic short-cut - open file location
2). for me that was: Computer (OS) - Programs(86) - Dreamcatcher - Gothic III (this shows list of all fiiles in Gothic III folder)
3). Drag the True type font file out of the file folder (is about 438 kb).
4). Download the cleaned font file from Larissa (our hero!)
5). Drag that file (only 47 kb's) into the Gothic folder
6). restart your computer and start a new game
7). Solved

Thanks to the other posters that contrbuted - your posts gave me ideas to try and pointed me in the right direction in eliminating what the problem was not.

Love the Gothic franchise. If they would only use the community as dedicated play-testers BEFORE the game releases, they would really challenge Oblivion / even Diablo for their crowns.

Wyrd - your advice to restart the computer after switching files made all the difference. Without the restart, the game didn't recognize the new font file.

Thank you so much!
