I am having serious Lag with this game even at its lowest settings. I have even tried using FPS Limiter which helps a little but only improves gameplay a little.
My spec is...
AMD x2 6000 @3.00 Ghz
8 gig of OCZ ddr2 ram
896mb Nvidia 260GTX
3 HDD's (160, 320 and 1TB)
Windows 7 64bit
Could the CPU be bottlenecking the system?
The demo ran very smooth too, but the full game runs just as bad as Gothic 3.
Im thinking of upgraging CPU to Athlon II X4 before xmas, would this be a good choice? am quite limited on budget though.
You installed the hotfix, right?
Hum what confuses me is this... I just bought ArcaniA: Gothic 4 today in Steam and my FPS is moderate around 50ish-70ish while I play... I've been playing for 6 hours non stop now (xD) and noticed no lag what so ever... My computer has similar components to yours... I think you should just reboot your computer and restart Arcania and play on. If it doesnt work after that, then I would get the hotfix and not use your money on a new computer even if your computer you have now is more or less good.

My game runs smoothly at 1680 X 1050, High res with a much more modest graphics card than yours. I have a Phenom II X4 810 and 4 Gb DDR3-1600, I'd have thought your system would be fine. My game updated automatically on installation (14 October), so I never ran it without the fix. I've had no obvious bugs or other problems, pretty impressive I thought. Good luck!

An often used tweak for Nvidia cards is to set the Maximum Frames to render ahead to zero - you do it in the Nvidia Control Panel.
It does make a difference with Arcania.

Well no change after the hotfix install, the game runs but is still bad even at low detail, however... I also have XP on my pc using dual boot, installed the game on there with the hotfix and while its still a little jumpy, its a vast improvement than with Windows 7. I had the same trouble with Rise of Flight the WW1 sim. Now I can play that at full detail on XP without any slowdown.
Will be upgrading my CPU soon though.

I had lag too but the following steps helped me, the lag has gone for me:
1.) Go to c:\Program Files\Jowood\Arcania\Data\configuration\ open ProcessManager.xml with notepad, find the line
CreateProcess instance-name="main" memory-size="80000000" type="Gothic4Process" thread-pool-bit="2"
change the value in thread-pool-bit="2" to thread-pool-bit="1"
(This one helped me with the lag issue.)
2.) find the line ThreadConfig platform="PC" cores="2" , change the value in cores="2" to the number of cores your cpu has.
3.) When you play the game press alt+tab, then open Task Maganer, go to Processes, right click on Arcania.exe, press Set Affinity..., uncheck all cpus except 0. CPU, go back to the game, alt+tab again and check all cpus in Set Affinity. That one gives me +5-6 fps ingame but have to do it every time I start the game.

My fps went down with 15-20 after doing this :scared:

Try to do one step at a time. There are two thread-pool-bit="1" lines in the xml, the upper one you should change. Don't forget to check the cpus again after unchecking in 3.). You can also try to double the memory size in the xml but i'm not sure about this one.
But i heard a real patch is coming soon, that should solve everybody's problem.

For those of you running AMD x2/x3/x4 core CPU's you should be able to download and install the AMD Overdrive app.
There is an advanced feature that allows you to set the CPU Affinity when a specific .exe is run.
This way if you find any game that gets any kind of performance bump by limiting the CPU cores then this would do it automatically without having to do the ALT + TAB trick ;)
I use a Phenom ][ Model 955 on my gaming rig and it works great for those games that require this...
