Any way to unpack those pak files yet?

DonKnotts

Unpacking isn't the important part, packing files that the game can read is. Until that happens, modding won't be happening.

BTW, did anyone else notice Risen shares some sounds with Hexen and the original Quake? I think that's a sign that I play too many video games.

Well, I don't know about you, but I've already made some changes to the game.
I've edited the hero's face and made him a beard, and also edited Inquisitor Mendoza's ugly eye in the main menu. Take a look

[...] packing files that the game can read is. Until that happens, modding won't be happening.Creating new PAKs is easy, creating the files that you want to put in the volumes isn’t.

Where does custom content go then, if not into a pak file?

I have tried to change ingame font, but after unpacking if from GUI2.PAK game does not use it anymore - even the original just unpacked (and uses ARIAL.TTF intead).

So how to make game to use font if it is NOT in PAK file?

So how to make game to use font if it is NOT in PAK file?Don’t touch the TTF. This information might help:

If you just want to change the FaceName, you can modify the strings (quite easy because the file is saved in a GENOMFLE (http://www.bendlins.de/nico/risen/genomfle.txt) container. To use the modified file ingame, copy it to %LocalAppData%\Risen\...\ or crate a patch volume (e.g. http://upload.worldofplayers.de/files4/RisenLucidaConsole.zip ).

Hmmm... But I want to change the font :D
That's the point.

What I want to do is add PL characters like:
zacute, Zacute, zdotaccent, Zdotaccent, nacute, Nacute, sacute, Sacute, cacute, Cacute, aogonek (needs advanced editing to position "ogonek"), Aogonek (same edit as a), eogonek (same as a), Eogonek (same as a)
I have the font created, but cannot make game to use it :(

NicoDE

I have the font created, but cannot make game to use it :(Well, in the Russian release the localization team forgot to add "Russian" to the language list ("English;German;French;Italian;Spanish").
Therefore, "Arial" is used instead of "Quorum Md BT" - the TTF is not used at all, until you fix the compiled_fonst.bin (that’s my point ;)).

Send me your BIN and I will have a look at it.

Wild Yosemity
12.10.2009, 11:25
I see.
Looks I'll have to wait for someone, becasue I'm not so skilled...
I can edit some scripts, make new textures, create new fonts, but I just cannot and don't know how to work with BIN, etc...

I play ENG game (STEAM), but when SAVE is made and date is written the month name is wrong :)
As October is Październik in PL. ź (zacute) is not displayed OK...

Did some more research and I believe that in real PL game edition the font was also "forgotten".
So PL gamers may not be happy about some fonts in game...

NicoDE
12.10.2009, 11:47
I changed the language list to "English;French;German;Italian;Polish;Russian;Spanish" to enable "Quorum Md BT" for Polish too: RisenFontsPolish.zip (http://upload.worldofplayers.de/files4/RisenFontsPolish.zip).
(I heard that the Polish release excepts *.p00, not *.00 like the EFIGS release - if it does not work, rename the *.p00 to *.00)

Thanks for that, but what if (and that is the way it is) the Quorum MD does not contain PL characters?

I have added those missing characters to the original font, but now have to MAKE the game to use it.

Will putting the font into GUI2.PAK solve the problem?
I could send You correct PL font today evening.

Will putting the font into GUI2.PAK solve the problem?I don't know if this problem is related to the font, or not. Might be a Unicode and/or translation issue...
("Arial" should have all Polish characters, so it might be a translation/localization problem)

I could send You correct PL font today evening.I will be offline until tonight anyway. Just send it to nicode@gmx.net or try to put it in the directory for physical files that override the PAKed files (%LocalAppData%\Risen\...\).

ps: I recommend that a moderator on this board splits the thread.

And in those places, where are PL chars, ARIAL is displayed.
What I want to achieve is to use updated Quorum MD with PL chars integrated inside.
Result should be: Game uses QUORUM MD and displays PL chars with QUORUM MD :)

Save the attached compiled_fonts.bin and your modified quorumm.ttf in %LocalAppData%\Risen\.
The BIN should change the font face and your TTF should fix the font symbols.

Note: %LocalAppData% is new to Windows Vista, for Windows XP read this: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/add-localappdata-environment-variable-in-windows-xp/

That does not work.
If I rename gui2.pak to different name and use files as requsted I get pure arial in game.

Game does not want to use Risen font even if it is NOT modified.

Please send me the modified font and I’ll have a look at it.
It would be useful to know the Unicode value (U+0XXX) of a character that does not work with the original Quorum Md BT and is included in your version of the TTF.

So many people on this board say they solved a problem or answered a question but they never elaborate. How do you use custom textures in the game if they are not in a pak file? What folder do they go in? Do they need the ._ximg extension and header or can they be just a plain .dds file? Give us some details, after all this is the "Help" section.

NicoDE
12.10.2009, 22:25
What folder do they go in?%LocalAppData%\Risen\. The subfolder doesn’t matter.

Do they need the ._ximg extension and headerYes.

or can they be just a plain .dds file? No.

Give us some details, after all this is the "Help" section.:D
I published file format description and still receive request for tools to create such files... I’m not the only one who is able to develop tools.

DonKnotts

Alright, never mind I figured it out. The custom content has to be in C:\Users\*\AppData\Local\Risen in a folder with the name of the pak file the new content will be overriding. In my case "C:\Users\*\AppData\Local\Risen\images. I don't know if the ._ximg header is necessary, but I used it anyway. I tested it with a modified texture of the Titan sword blades to get rid of the bronze/gold tone and make it more like steel. I'm guessing that the process is the same for any other file type.

@ DonKnotts: Sorry man, it was my mistake. As NicoDE already said, files go to %LocalAppData%\Risen\ (I Think it is C:\Users\Youruser\AppData\Local\Risen\ in Vista and Documents and Settings\USERNAME\local config\program data\Risen\ in XP)
You need to put the header into the file after you've edited, and it needs to be saved in _ximg. In this aspect the game is different from Gothic 3, here you need to use the xmig you can't use only a dds.
I know, it is too late, but I needed to apologize for being an ass.

You can also take a look at this (http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=694172) thread if you want to know more.

Hi all. After NicoDE tell's me how to fix bin file to add new font into game, i wrote small program which will allow to you to select some ttf file and install it into the game. Also as i heard - in polish version to add new content it is needed to make not ".00" files, but ".p00" ... so specially for Polish version, program will make p00 files...

You can download it there - http://www.worldofrisen.de/english/download_62.htm

No worries, and no apologies needed. I wasn't upset or anything, as it probably seemed in my earlier post. I was just being impatient because I wanted to change a few things in game before I played through again as an Order faction member. In that mean time I did a lot of searching and found the basics for editing item properties here: http://www.cheathappens.com/show_board2.asp?headID=89217&titleID=14512
I have changed the Titan weapons to have more "titan like" damage. As long as you know the original in game decimal value of the stat you want to change, you can convert it to hex and search for that value. Since the template files are all pretty small it doesn't take much trial and error to figure them out.
