Hello WoG Community,
We're delighted to announce the official release of our latest patch, v1.0a. Okay, it's been out for a little while now :p, but we decided to wait until it was up here on WoG, the community where we came into being, before we made an official announcement.
We've fixed some final bugs in the scripts and added a new, optional Alternative Balancing System, for those who want to try Gothic II again but with some more flavor to the gameplay. You don't have to install it if you want to play "classic" NotR, but if you're itching for a new game experience with the same game, you might want to give it a shot.
Full details are found in the Readme, available during the setup and in the /ICP directory generated by the Setup. Enjoy our newest release!

UPDATE:
We have thrown together an experimental hotfix for sufferers of buggy fight AI. The problem seems to have been resolved now, but please let us know if you run into further complications. And for now, enjoy :).

Update 10/20/09: Just to address a few concerns I read on another board, I highlighted the words optional and you don't have to install it with regards to Alternative Balancing. Just to reiterate, it's entirely optional, and you can fully enjoy the fixes and features we added without the Alternative Balancing system.

Go talk to Hakon, he should be selling a new sword called the Fencing Sabre. If that's in, the mod works. Also, check Vatras' dialogue. Upon saying "Good, let us summarize", the subtitle was in German, that should no longer be the case.

you need to download only this version because it contains the changes of the older versions and alternative balancing increases the monsters toughness, ads new weapons, balances the Claw of Beliar and the LP costs and some other things, download and read the readme or change log;)

Ok thanks, it sounds really cool.
But now when I installed it and start a new game, the game crashes while loading and comes up with this error:

You sure that's the right .exe? There should have been codeview enabled in the error log should the game have crashed.

I just chose the .exe in the Gothic II/system folder, and what is codeview exactly? Thanks for your help btw! :D

@Niborius- Try replacing the .exe with the report version. If that doesn't solve the problem, it should have at least have a more detailed error log. so we can see exactly what's causing it in the code.
After this, try uninstall and reinstall your copy of Gothic II + NOTR. Make sure it works, then install the ICP v1.0a.

What's the report version? And about the error log, I can't find it. The readme said this:
- error log of GOTHIC II after a crash (sehr wichtig)
(will be copied into the file SYSTEM/GOTHIC2.RPT after a crash)
But in fact, there's no gothic2.rpt at all in there.
I already tried to re-install though, but same result..

Nevermind, I bought Gothic 2 Gold yesterday and it's working fine now, but thanks for the help nonetheless!
One more question: Do you think you will be able to fix the fps lag bug in future patches?

Optimization and memory management improvement is something we looked/are looking into, certainly. Some issues can be fixed to an extent by messing with .ini values, others not so much :). That's the stuff we will try to fix.

I did all kind of things in the .ini file but my fps stays around 22 fps in khorinis at full view distance (I did a test one time to see if anything changes if I changed some values in the ini file)
There's also another bug with the camera in widescreen: If you load a game the screen is very wide, when you talk to someone the aspect ratio changes to the right one.
At any rate, I'm very glad you guys are making these patches. It makes the game even more fun. Any idea when the next patch will be released?

Question for Korianous: I been playing (almost done) a game with HOP that I've enjoyed very much. I checked the readme in 1.0a and it seems like the alternate balance part is pretty much the HOP additions. Is this true? Would there a noticeable difference between the two? TIA

Alternative Balancing has scaled back the enormous XP gains from HoP, and the rebalancing is done in a bit more sensible manner. It doesn't cater as much to powergaming as HoP did. The monsters have been also rebalanced more thoughtfully, instead of incredibly tough, like HoP, many will have unique strengths and weaknesses. IE, some enemies may be completely unaffected by arrows, but incredibly vulnerable to blunt weapons. You'll just have to play to see :).

@Niborius- We've fixed most existing bugs, and enhanced most features, Gothic II Gold wasn't an incredibly buggy game to begin with, so we didn't have too much to fix, so much as stuff we could improve on.
Right now, we're pretty satisfied with how the patch has turned out, Optimization work is difficult to do via code injection, and judging as how we have no access to the original ZenGine source code, we're trying to look into other ways of fixing these things.
So, idk if there will be any future patches, any further corrections we do would just be nitpicking.
We still do have plans to fix Gothic 1, but for Gothic 1 we're trying to make one patch that does everything we want it to, with no need for any supplemental patches. We'll have more news on it soon :).

I've just installed Gothic 2 Gold (the GoG version) and afterward, i've installed the full ICP 1.0a.
The problem is that while i have the patch modifications in the game (starting 40 HP, tougher young wolves, etc) i don't have the alternative balancing (when i tell Xardas about the old stone tablet, with AB, i should get 250 XP and i only get 50).I have checked my Data folder and the Alternative_Balancing.vdf is there.
Any advice?Thanks.

The XP cap was reimplemented prior to release, because it's removal unbalanced the game a bit too much. Guess we forgot to take it out of the Readme.

So I installed Gothic 2 over again and applied the patch without the alternative balancing system. (I will play it with that feature later).
You said that Vatras' german line is fixed in this patch, (When he says "good, let us samurize" (sorry if it's spelled wrong lol)) but it seems the patch is not installed correctly, since I can still see the german text.
I tried it over again but it's still the same result.
Do you have any ideas? :(

Hmm, go to your Gothic II folder, head to the following directory:
"_work/Data/Scripts/Content/Cutscene"
Are there files named ou.dat/ou.lsc? Rename these files by adding a .bak extension to them or something. Then start a new game and you should see the changes.

Is there still an ou.bin file? It should be parsing that file instead. If it's not, simply replace the ou.dat file with the ou.bin file (rename it ou.dat). Let me know if that works.

Well first this: I've been to Hakon, and I heard that the patch gives him a new weapon available for sale. But that's not true on my game either.
I will try the ICP v1.0 patch and see if that works.

Downgrading won't fix that ;). You said you didn't install Alternative Balancing right? ICP v1.0a by itself is a purely bugfixing/enhancing patch. All new content (new weapons from Hakon, most monster rebalancing) is implemented only when Alternative Balancing is installed. This way, we don't force you to play with new content if you don't want to.
Only minor rebalancing was done with the vanilla patches, such as in the case of the Giant Rats, as it was illogical to have Young Giant Rats & Giant Rats to give similar XP bonuses.
I would also like to add that the ou.bin file is installed with ICP v1.0a, exactly because dialogs were not displayed/not displayed correctly. Perhaps the installer didn't properly write/overwrite the system files.
Hi, it’s me again. Sorry for bad English :)
I just found a nasty bug involving Orc Elite. They don’t attack you. When you get close to them they just freeze. If you are playing the game using GothicStarter scripts, game will crash as soon you encounter Orc Elite.

The Fight AI of certain creatures has been changed, I may have left out those changes when I uploaded the scripts.
EDIT: Reproduced the error. We may compile another patch to fix this issue.

· DIA_DMT_1201_Dementor.d (all the Seekers, except the one in the pass to the Valley of Mines)
· DIA_OrcElite_AntiPaladin1.d (the Elite Orcs that show when you are a paladin)
· DIA_Pal_220_Schiffswache.d (all the ship guards)
They don't have any text, but they have the conditions to initiate the following files (located in the "Story\B_AssignAmbientInfos\"):
· B_AssignDementorTalk.d (which has all the dialogs with the Seekers surrounding Vino or the Seekers of Irdorath)
· B_AssignDementorTalkRitual.d (which has all the text of the Seekers in the Ritual)
· B_AssignORC_AntiPaladinTalk.d (which has the dialog of the Elite Orcs of the paladin's quest)
· B_AssignSchiffswachenTalk.d (which has all the warnings of the ship guards)
Without those "DIA" files, those four "B_Assign" files don't initiate when it should be. I didn't check the files of the patch itself yet, only the English Scripts of the previous link, but maybe this is the cause of some bugs (the no-talking Ritual Seekers or the previously mentioned freezing orcs, for example).

Comfirmed. Ship Guards AI is bugged, same thing as Orc Elite. As for the Seekers I don’t know, it seems they are fine. If someone want to check out this is the save just before Chapter 3 (just talk to Garond).

NP, glad to help. I really appreciate what you are doing here. With your scripts it’s so easy to make simple mods and I love to do that + game is bug free.
About this issue. I spend few hours today trying to find out how to fix this but no luck so far. As far as I know you did everything properly, scripts are fine. As a last resort I downloaded those 3 scripts from German version and compiled them together with your scripts using GothicSourcer 3.10 but nothing. Bug is still there.
I personally won't play Gothic 2 without your scripts ever again. I can wait until you fix this.
And again, sorry for bad English. I know I sound like a retard :)

Agree with Niborius that there is a bug with Widescreen, but I can live with it. It's definately better than the orginal always stretch! :D

1st of all i whan't to say thank u all from Ironkeep Studios for doign great job and this awesome game and rezurecting it with patches like this. ( for me gothic games will be my best single player gameing exp. ever )
Now few question about patch. I instaled it and playing and whanted to start hard core game u know without die at all :) on my big supprise 1st wolf killed me lol. Ok i rerolled and skiped 1st mob , but later on i see that all monsters are a lot harder to kill ( read imposible ) but i am still low lvl and havent learn anythign ( saving points) so i am just curios will i be able to play gothic in my usual style wiht this pathc or i have to choose guild fast and redistribue my points fast i am still low lvl tho. ( also i hope this will be playable wiht melee char couse parry in gothic is what i enjoy most )

If you are using alternative balancing, you needn't join a guild, you can still play as you choose to play. But if you don't spend LP at all, the game will be far tougher, I suggest you invest in your desired skill set, LP is rebalanced to be more forgiving in the beginning.

I think that's only in the original, non-NOTR game, the cost raises. In NOTR you can train whatever.
Any chance for getting higher drawing distance fix with a mod?

Engine patching is difficult to do with the existing methods we have, code injection via C++ .dlls (IMO irresponsible due to damage potential from a mistake in the .dll). Directly patching the .exe with Assembly is another possibility, but anyone who's worked with Assembly knows how fun that is.
Theoretically, it's possible, but for now, it's a hassle. Of course, that isn't to say I won't look into it ;). In the meantime, .ini manipulation seems to be the only way to do this.
I've already tried play with INI and it seems that draw distances are locked up to 300% (14?). :( But atleast the drawing distance is higher than in Risen. :p

When you work with files scripts game Gothic, application GothicSourcer, it is desirable to use the latest version - 3.14. This version does not make mistakes when decompiling/compiling files.

I'll need more information than that. Do you get an error message? Also, do you have the report version.exe installed? Those two things will help me to identify your problem.

Heya - like the idea of the patch. Been playing straight NotR for a few days and I didn't like the change to the LP costs so I'm looking forward to that as well as I like the fencing saber and new bows (so yes I got it working.)
I'm running Windows 7 with a Radeon 5850 and I was wondering if you added something that I'm missing with video changes? I've been just hacking the gothic.ini and switching my resolution to 1920x1080x32 but I have to edit the gothic.ini each time I launch (I have a copy in a subfolder that I copy over the one in the system folder so I don't have to edit, but it's still a PITA.)
Do you guys have something else that I'm missing?

Heya - like the idea of the patch. Been playing straight NotR for a few days and I didn't like the change to the LP costs so I'm looking forward to that as well as I like the fencing saber and new bows (so yes I got it working.)

Nope, that's what I have to do as well. The ZenGine seems to have trouble with certain Widescreen Resolutions (but it worked on my old PC at 1440 x 900, funnily enough). We may have to look into it some more. Currently, I only run G1/G2 windowed at 800 x 600, because that makes my life as a programmer way easier :).

I was faced with the same problem not too long ago. My workaround was to make a .bat file that would copy an .ini file with the altered resolution over the one game makes. It turns out, there is a better solution though. Edit the "Target" field of the game shortcut and add the following:
-zRes:****,****,32
replace **** with the resolution values like this for example:
-zRes:1920,1080,32
Edit: ah, you're talking about Gothic 2. In that case just make sure ExtendedMenu=1 in gothi.ini and higher resolutions should become selectable in the game.
I guess i can't use this patch with the Collector's Edition?
Any news on the "widescreen activated with dialog" bug?

@Student- The patch should work with any version of Gothic 2 + NotR.
@Ergopad-Niborius - Still working on it.
Is the camera working as it should be in widescreen? I run the game in 1920x1080 (16:9) and it seems like the camera is a bit too "high".

Hi all and thanks for the patch! I have some issues though:
1. When I install the patch it says it installed correctly (I installed it in the "system" folder - I think that's right) but when I enter the game it says v2.7(eng). What version should I see written there in the game menu?
2. Also, I don't see the intro movies nor some other movies (for instance I can see the movie shown during the first loading but I can't see the movie during the first conversation with Xardas)
3. Another thing is that the camera turn scroll is very slow...
P.S. I am new to Gothic 2. I only played Gothic 3.

The setup for ICP1.0a, says, on the "Select destination directory" page:
Please install this into your Gothic II Gold root folder.
That means ....Gothic2\ , not ....\Gothic2\system\
The version displayed should be 2.6 (fix), I think, not 2.7.

That is what I did first but it ended with the message "The patch could not be installed" or something like that.
P.S. I have Gothic 2 + NoTR
Weird, since I selected a total random folder and it installed in it without problems.
Can you try again? If you get the same error, write it down and tell us exactly what error was.

...It just worked now...I'm sorry. I don't know what went wrong the first time.
What about my other issues from my original post; the camera turn speed and the fact that I can't see movies nor intro?
About the videos, you could try to set scaleVideos to 0 in your ...Gothic2\system\gothic.ini file (with a simple text editor, like notepad for example). Search in that file for scaleVideos=1 and make it scaleVideos=0
About the rest... I don't know.

I don't have double Gothic folders. And yeah, now I am sure that the patch installed succesfully. However, it messed up my files. For example the Lares bug is still there, but the orc elite doesn't fight and wolves and rats are tougher. It seems the patch installed partly. Sadly, I realised it in Chapter 3 while fighting orcs outside the castle and it was too late to start over. But nevermind, I already finished the game and won't play it in the nearest future. :P But if anything, I will try to install your patch again.

I have a bug with Biff i think one of the first dragon hunters where you meet Gorn near the abandoned mine,the one that offers you to follow anywhere.after he says a phrase he starts repeating over and over again with 3-4 sec pause,time when you need to fiind a way to kill/get away from him
I recently bought 5.1 surround set as well as new soundcard and noticed that surround sound is not working in Gothic 2. I tried Creative ALchemy as well, but no luck. Whenever I change the sound provider and restart the game, it sets the provider back to Miles, except Dolby Surround but it doesn't seem to have any effect.
Any chance that you might fix this with future CP?

About the Orc Elite AI bug: I placed the fight.dat file posted at the begining of this topic in _work\Data\Scripts\_compiled\ and overwrited but it seems to have no effect on the AI of the Orc Elite. I saved just before fighting one, I exited the game, I copied the fight.dat in the folder mentioned above, I reentered the game and still, nothing happens...the orc doesn't attack me when I go near him...is there something I did wrong?
One more thing...how does the learning points/skill system work? I have 30 for 2H and 30 for 1H and this with no bonuses from my weapons or armor. From what I red on the internet I should now pay 1 learning point for 1 skill upgrade for either 1H or 2H until 60...but I still have to pay 2 learning points for 1 skill(so 30 skills in 1H does not influence with anything the 2H learning points/skill requirement)...I want to use 2H so...did I upgrade my 1H to 30 in vain?

Question 1: Other users have complained of persistence. Perhaps a reinstall and regression to 1.0 could help, until we've worked out those issues.

Bugreport: Got an error from the installer at the installing process which states that the uninstaller file couldn't be created properly. The installation process shut down.
There are other 2 bugs in this patch which I had seen and are not posted by anyone else here...
1-when you go to the Circle of sun where the seekers desecrate the eye there is no comment (which prior was) by one of them in which he told you that you arrive to late they destroyed the eye...(I think it was a journal entry too)
2-in bandits camp add-on world there is a problem ...Normally when you arrive here you talk to Franco (I am not sure of the name) the boss of the outside-he send you to Logan to hunt with(swamp sharks) him and them he sent you to collect a green stone (or yellow) and when you return to him he says that he already send Logan and you can kick his ass ;)
If you made the hunt of swamp sharks quest before talking with Franco you do not have the next quest for the green stone,just the option to kill him ...
Both of them where not in the game without the patch...:gratz§wink
Also the Orcish Warlords and Colonel are not attacking , one of the Orcish Warlords(I am paladin) next to Xardas and one next to the city (east entrance) had a little comment before the patch , but now not.
I will tell you more when I discover it...now I am playing...

OK, I have a problem with the ICP or HOP know (I am rather sure that it related to at least one of those projects): 1. Nearly all of my text went english, I reinstalled some times. As it is now, I have english dialouge options, but german dialouges (I am playing the German version). I have to admit that I re-installed the game to the same directory. I tested to lead modifications and it seems to work. But my biggest worry at the moment is, that it seems that some parts of the mod get overwritten. Tricksy's Minimod for instance normally shows the range of all weapons, but infact I am just seeing the english infocard atm. Which files I have to delete before I install the game again? (I don't want to use a other directory for GII cause I have installed many modifications...:x)

Ok so im pretty new to this whole mod thing so forgive me if im a retard.(this is a patch anyways is it not)
I just re-installed gothic 2 gold.
I install your patch 1.0a full installation. It says it was installed correctly.
I go to the system file in gothic 2 folder and I see the normal gothic 2 NOTR exe, and a "game" icon file, which I cannot open.
I start gothic 2 and when the screen comes up it is still 2.7, not 2.6(fix) as it says it should be on this forum.
What did I do wrong, is the patch installed or not (I can defently see the new files in the directory).
Also I hear alot about bugged orc elites and other bugs, has any of this been fixed or are you still working on that?
Thanks to all who took the time to make this patch, sounds very interesting and I cant wait to get back into gothic.

Try to install the patch again, and make sure the patch installer points to the right path for the G2 folder. Example: you have G2 installed to D:\Gothic2 and the patch installer says it will install in C:\Program Files\JoWood\Gothic II\
It will say it installed correctly even if it's not installed correctly :) , so it's up to you.

Yes, the 1.0a version has a setup bug with deciding where to install. Best of all, just install the patch in some other random folder and then copy its contents to your G2 root folder.

Ok so I tried this, basically just cut+paste all the files into the appropiate folders and overwriteing all the files that were there(and yes everything was there). But the Gothic 2 exe was slightly different (I think like 0.01MB difference) and I highly suspect that that was the problem. Maybe try looking into that if this is a huge problem for alot of people.
2.6(fix) up and running now :D

Yep, the 2.6 version is indeed 0.01MB smaller than the 2.7 one.
This bug will be fixed in the next patch version.

Hey so I have a question about the alternative balancing, in terms of weapon proficiencies.
I see in the readme that the scale for LP:str/dex/mana has been increased at certain levels, is this the same thing for weapons as well?
Because I see that when I hit 30% with 2H and as usual it will ask me for 10LP to learn another 5 in it- but I remember it used to take the other 5 and put it in 1H... Is this a glitch or did the balancing make it possible to go only 1 style?
And if this is the case, lets say I wanted to take both styles, would bringing my 1H up to 30% as well as my 2H allow me to learn for 1LP per skill once again?

Doh! I just re-read the readme and it says: "LP costs for combat training are unaffected."
But that would mean that it should still be forcing me to learn both. I know it was like this in classic G2 but im not sure if maybe that they changed it when they added NOTR? Never played NOTR b4 I patched this because I was sure it would be glitchy.
The militia teacher in the barracks there even says so when you ask him whether you should learn 1H or 2H first, he says it doesnt really matter much in the end because you will start learning the other regardless(or something to that effect). Maybe just a lingering script that someone forgot to remove?
Anyways... I guess I will just keep pumping up my str for now. Cmon Korianous, almighty keeper of infinite knowledge! Enlighten me :D

Ok so I took the liberty of saving up 30 LP to test out what is going on with this.
I currently have 1H-10% and 2H-30%.
So when I learn 2H in increments of 10LP/5skill points, the first time I will have 1H-10% and 2h-35%. When I again try to learn 2H, the origonal system kicks in, and I have 1H-15% and 2H-40%.
Now heres the weird part. I tried to increase in increments of 2LP/1skill point, and I find that I will not begin learning 1H untill I hit 40% with 2H. So I will have 1H-11% and 2H-40%.
I have tried stripping gear, learning 1H to 30% first, going to different trainers, and just about anything else I can to get around this glitch. No luck.
Anyone else know what im talking about or is it just me?
Hmm, strange. We'll need to take a look at the scripts for that thing. Could you please, recopy this into the BuG thread, please?

Can't answer, need to check scripts, probably in the weekend. If the bug is fixable, expect it in the next patch version.

It was, but there were a couple of underlying issues that I didn't think about when I provided it. The fix should be minor, but I guess the improved AI won't be making it in without further modifications.

ICP has just reached version 1.0b. The Orc Elite AI issue seems to be fixed. If nobody else reports further issues, and after we resolve the ones that remain, we will make an official release. In the meantime, go to the first page and download the zip file under the link provided.

There is a hotfix for the ai, but expect the bigger patch to arrive soon.

Moved post to the relevant thread. You replace your Gothic.dat file with the one from the archive. The gothic.dat is found with the other .dat files, in the compiled scripts folder. From the Gothic 2 folder, navigate to the following directory:
_work/Data/Scripts/_compiled/

it does change only the subs but the speech is full russian, i also use russian gothic games all of them (Gothic 1. Gothic 2/NOTR. Gothic 3, and Forsaken Gods) all russians gothics :D except for gothic 3 which didn't change to english cause the CPT 1.74 support almost all languages so the subs still russian in original gothic 3 but forsaken gods the subs english cause of patch 1.08

It looks to me like both are bugfix patches and both are for Gold version.

The latter one is the newer version. Slight change in name. You only need the newest one.

I am no modder, but afaik some scripts are parsed when starting a new game. So I guess some changes might be notable during your continued walkthrough, but on the other hand it might lead to some weird problems.
