Hello and welcome, wary traveler. This is the Hardcore Gothic Challenge and our mantra is: Do not die and do not reload. To prevent disqualification, please take a moment to read the rules and leave all ideas of spamming behind. Thank you.

Hardcore Gothic Challenge thread #3 (http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=332549)
Hardcore Gothic Challenge thread #2 (http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=308951)
Hardcore Gothic Challenge thread #1 (http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=273817)

RULES

#1: This is a no reloads game which means that whatever choices you make, you made 'em and that's it. You save when you stop playing and load when you start playing again. When you die it's game over.

#2: Please leave thread-destructive comments like "Playing this way is stupid" or "You're missing the whole point of Gothic" aside. This method of playing is for experienced and very patient players as it requires a lot of forward planning. So if you don't like it, don't do it.

#3 When you want to participate, make a clear statement on it and an introductory post where you'll put your character build (more on this later) and if you plan on roleplaying, some personality info.

#4 Clearly mark your official character diary posts with a headline like "Huntsman's Hardcore Dragon Hunter" so that they are easy to find amongst other user comments.

#5 DO NOT CHEAT, THIS IS FOR FUN ONLY. No one will win big bucks or ultimate respect for beating the game with a mage in a day or killing a dragon snapper at lvl 1.

#6: Mods that don't change the storyline are allowed, and listed in the "Modded Games" section.

#7 BY TAKING PARTICIPATION IN THIS CHALLENGE YOU ARE OBLIGED TO CLEARLY MARK THE POST WHERE YOU STATE YOUR CHARACTER'S DEATH OR VICTORY OVER THE CHALLENGE IN LARGE, COLORED FONT

TIPS

#1 Be very careful and plan your every move.

#2 If you're not sure you can handle it...RUN!

#3 Don't hesitate to ask for advice in this thread like "Do you guys think I could do the black troll at lvl 25 with Large Fire Storm?"

#4 Do not attack enemies in groups. Lure every enemy, no matter how weak it/he is.

#5 In hardcore brave = dead and stupid in most cases.

#6 Idle hands are devil's playground. If you suddenly feel like risking it for quick booty - call it a day.

#7 Don't go near cliffs and when you do - walk instead of run. There is a great chance you could fall and end your adventure in a stupid way. After all, it's realistic to slip up in an unknown, steep mountain path.

#8 Do not have mercy for your enemies. Never let it attack, always keep it at a distance and use all power that you have available.

BENEFITS OF HARDCORE

#1 Everything seems different. The dialogues, the world, the enemies, it's a whole new Gothic experience. Recommended for players who've already beaten Gothic with every character and know their way around.

#2 When an NPC tells you "Wow, you're brave!" there's a great chance you'll really feel this way, even if it's not much, because you're putting your life on the line here and not just reloading 10 times until you make 2 critical hits in a row in order to kill the enemy.

#3 You just wanna read through all the dialogues...again. Trust me.

#4 Makes you feel real and alive.

#5 You won't feel guilty for knowing the game and it's secrets, weapons and being good at it. This is where it all counts.

ARRRGGG! Giovanni #4 has died!

He was a L27 Fire Magician, killed by fire rain from the Seekers on Lobart's farm. §cry

It's been so long since I played last, I forgot they had that spell. 500 damage!!! That's not fair! And I got so far, too! §cry§cry§cry

Going through Jharkendar was extremely tiring for me, I don't know if I want to start playing again. Ah well, I think I'll take it easy for a while.

I hope this is okay to discuss in this thread, it does have to do with hardcore morality. If any mods indicate we should, we could make a separate topic for it. But:

The last topic ended in discussion about, among other topics, whether using a cheat code called 'southpark' to speed up the game is reasonable / within the hardcore spirit.

I see what you're saying, Air Mage. It's outside the game mechanics.

However, almost every hardcore death is due to human failure, and many are due to boredom. Playing hardcore without speeding up the game, tolerating the whole boredom aspect, poses a bigger challenge, because much of the hardcore challenge is against the boredom, the restlessness. This might just be me, but I suspect it's the same way for most people; I usually die due to not being patient enough. All the things that take time in the game make me consider more dangerous things than I should be considering, just to speed up things. For instance, going down to the swamp camp to buy an extra fire protection ring is less tempting if I know I have to walk (slowly, normally) all the way, so I might be tempted to just finish a short quest without it.

I do see that it doesn't give you any ingame advantages, it doesn't give your *character* any advantages, but where the key to getting through hardcore lies is in the player himself, not within the game mechanics.

I also think that ideally, the glitches are part of the game itself, and that whatever the developers failed to block you from doing IS indeed to be considered part of the game, but I would agree that for the purpose of this challenge, it would quickly degenerate if we allowed that. So sure, that's not good hardcore sportsmanship.

EDIT: My condolences! You did get far, though.

For instance, going down to the swamp camp to buy an extra fire protection ring is less tempting if I know I have to walk (slowly, normally) all the way, so I might be tempted to just finish a short quest without it.

Don't forget THE most important factor in all this: to have fun. The reason we play a game, and challenge ourselves with restrictions, is for enjoyment. If we constrain ourselves to doing everything slowly, laboriously, tediously, is it still fun? Is it still a game? If my playing starts to seem more like work, something I start avoiding because I don't want to do it, than I think we've taken a wrong turn somewhere.

I can agree that boredom and ennui can lead to silly, even stupid mistakes. Yes, you didn't buy the ring you should have, or made sure you had enough potions before setting out, but in the end, it is the combat that kills you. You weren't strong enough, or prepared enough, but you chose to go in there as you were and so must accept that you were in over your head.

As I just mentioned, going through Jhar was VERY tiresome for me, as I went around picking up every single damn plant and flower there was. In part it was because I'm a "gotta have it all" kind of person, but also as I was trying to establish some numbers for Khorinis masters. In any case, my mind often went numb, reeling away from yet another huge area I had to pick. I often longed for more monsters, something, anything, to give me just a little excitement. It is this fact alone that keeps me from starting a new game right away. The thought of doing Jhar all over again? My memories are still too painful.

What killed me just now was ignorance. I have been avoiding Seekers all through chapter 3, because I saw my piddly spells didn't do much, and it took more mana than I liked to take one down. When I did fight them though, I only saw them use fireball and lesser fire storm. As I said, I know from years ago they can cast fire rain, but I had forgotten. So, no amount of preparation could have saved me from all that damage. And taking the slow way would not have helped me.

I don't understand which you're referring to here. Are you saying that using southpark is not sportsmanlike, or beating up NPCs for gear is not sportsmanlike?

For myself, I can only say that I try to follow the spirit of a game, not its letter. Even if a game offers an overpowered weapon or power, I will likely avoid it since I don't think it "fair" or "realistic". There are situations where I will avoid things that are part of a game, and change things that aren't part of a game, to make the game more balanced in my opinion. I believe very strongly in balance, but that's just me and my opinion. :)

I don't understand which you're referring to here. Are you saying that using southpark is not sportsmanlike, or beating up NPCs for gear is not sportsmanlike?
What I meant was that I normally (in a non-hardcore game) consider glitch exploitation to be okay, since I view any feature of a game, intended or not, to be part of it, but that for hardcore, we should avoid it. Not talking about southpark. However, on the topic of the southpark code:

I definitely see your point about having fun, and I agree on that. Myself, I'll gladly use a lot of convenience features/cheats if I'm just playing a normal, non-hardcore game and screwing around. I don't like to use things like that for convenience when playing hardcore, though, because I feel the realistic mood of the game, which is important to me in a hardcore game, is disrupted. But that's personal preference.

The core of the point I was mentioning is that a small bit of the hardcore challenge is lost when using convenience cheats, namely because hardcore games in general (not just when playing Gothic) are to a great degree a challenge of the mind. A test of patience. That is just what I was referring to, and that is probably a reason why the mods said that marvin mode stuff isn't supposed to be in this challenge. I'm just trying to specify and explain what was said earlier.

Personally, though, I think this is a small enough thing that it shouldn't disqualify from the challenge. Should imo strictly principally be avoided in hardcore, but meh! I mean, hey, we're all here for the good times anyways, this isn't some formal world championship, and I know how boring it is to play without convenience features if you've already gotten used to them.

Personally; I prefer the slow walk between camps/towns/etc. It gives you a nice opportunity to enjoy the view, especially if you've already cleared all those mistvieh and drecksviecher.

Beating a character up is, imo, ok. As long as you can do it without being knocked down yourself. Because repeatedly attacking someone like that would really get you killed imo. And running around with Lares' Axe really does feel good if you've beaten him in a single fight.

Ok, I'm going to start my Gothic I hardcore guy. Alwinus I is a young chap who was always fascinated by the mages and sees a great opportunity to get in touch with them when he gets this message. I'm going to post the first part soon enough, I'll just start playing in a moment.

EDIT: Well, I'm in. This colony sure is a strange place. I got punched in the face as soon as I arrived, lucky that this Diego guy came to save me. He was nice, introduced me to the colony and told me about the camps in the colony. After our little conversation I walked down the path. Near some closed-down mine I found a pickaxe. Well, that might come in handy!
Going down the path, I saw the featherless birds known in the land of Khorinis as 'scavengers'. They bite hard, though! And this was just a young one. After killing it with the pickaxe I picked up an old, rusty sword - probably a better weapon than the mining tool.
Soon after I stumbled upon two people in blue garments. Apparently they hunt scavengers. I gave one a beer and he told me a tip about killing scavengers. Nothing sophisticated, but worth to remember. Passing them, I walked across a bridge. The bridge guard shouted something like this after me: "Make sure you get to the camp, they're holding a pickaxe for you!". Idiot. Shaking my head, I walked up to the gate. The guard wanted ten ore from me to pass! Well, I told him Diego sent me. He let me in then. Like I'll fall for that.
Turns out Diego is the one who trains the newcomers. I'm supposed to impress some shadows now. I talked to Thorus, the heavily armored guard in front of the castle first, however. Now I'm supposed to kill this guy named Mordrag, from the New Camp. Well, I decided to hold this one for later.
Some shadow, Sly was his name, walked up to me. He had a job for me: find a guard called Nek, who might have went for the New Camp. Well, like I have a chance to get him in the New Camp! I walked on. A guard named Bloodwyn threatened me to pay 10 ore as protection money. But not being a complete idiot, I declined (not the least because I didn't have 10 ore as of yet). I also spoke with a cook named Snaf, who wanted me to fetch a few meatbugs and hell mushrooms. The food is probably vomit-inducing, but maybe I'll get something for it, I thought.
I got to know a merchant, Fisk, next. I sold him the arrows I found on the path to the camp and some beer I found in a chest. Got 12 ore nuggets for that - not much. While I was here, I walked out of the southgate. I heard there are shrooms here! The trouble was, some molerats sighted me and one started chasing me. Well, I was a bit confident, but I soon paid the price as it bit me hard two times. In that moment, a bolt flew from a nearby hill and the thing fell dead!
I walked up to my savior (sort of). He was Pacho, a guard to the orcland. I thanked him for the warning and went back for the warning. Learning from my mistake, I approached the other two molerats more cautiously and killed them without much damage. Well, as I went into the cave of the molerats I found a dead guard! And from his amulet, I learned he was Nek, the guard I had to find. I'm lucky! I also found a few ore pieces, some plants and a crude axe. I took the amulet back to Sly and he said he'd vote for me. But I fear this is only the beginning...

To be continued. Status:

Weapon: Withered Axe (1H, 13 dmg)
Strength: 20 (trained with Diego, just didn't mention)
Dexterity: 10
Skills: None learned yet
Danger factor (0-10): 5 - molerats are deadly if you swing badly. If you can hit them a few times they'll be history quick though.

Remember to save often.
Even though reloading isn't allowed except in case of game-breaking bugs and crashes.

I remember the days when my game crashed often enough that I saved approxemately every 5 minutes (and that was without looking at a clock )

Anyways; I can't wait till my gaming computer finaly works. :(
Then I can continue that lovely story that I started writing.

This is why I enjoyed hardcoring with notr instead of G1. One of the things that makes hardcoring fun is the tension of knowing that THIS monster could be your last, and even if you wanted to cheat and reload, your last save was a long time ago, so dying really ISN'T an option.

It was very hard to feel this with G1 though due to the crashes. While my game wasn't SO bad as to require saving every five minutes (), I did save often enough that I never really had that "out-on-a-limb" feeling. All the constant crashes were rather frustrating, as it not only breaks the mood you had going, but you then have the hassle of re-playing all the things you just did, making them feel less genuine.

Notr on my system is way more stable, and so I can really get in the mood, making it that much more fun.

I don't get what you mean...
You use LPs to get to 100 (max. reachable by learning) And then and only then use your elixirs... so you can go beyond the learning limit.
EDIT- Wait, you mean about the ex-blacksmith (whatever's his name) +5 bonus? Can't get that bonus once got over 100?

And by the way, I use elixirs right away in hardcore G1 and G2. In hardcore I try to survive the day instead of planning on the long run. In G2 NotR I would probably keep them though.

I wouldn't say easy since you'll need rings/amulet to get above 200.
And I doubt the worth of those compared to protection rings/amulet.

EDIT- Wait, you mean about the ex-blacksmith (whatever's his name) +5 bonus? Can't get that bonus once got over 100?
Hm.. accoring to Moonsingings it can't.
Its listed as a bug.

BOT.

I have started notr again, with Giovanni #5. I've spent some time struggling on how to justify this, since Gio 4 was the one who finished Gothic 1. Should I replay G1 all over again, to keep my storyline "pure"?

Ultimately, I decided I just didn't want to play G1 again. So, how to explain it. I could have Xardas resurrect me again, or maybe my twin brother will step in to help. Or maybe some other explanation. Finally I decided "screw it!". Xardas uses his awesome powers over time and space and rewinds reality so I can try again. :p

So Giovanni #5 is on his way!

Yes! Once again I triumph over the UD

At the tender age of level 39, my mage manged to send the UD straight back to hell with a vicious combination of Black Ore, Wave of Ice, Rain of Fire and Wave of Death (each spell twice, you gotta hand it to him: the UD is one tough bugger).
Irdorath had been a piece of cake, everything that wasn't killed by Rain of Fire fell to the second Rain, and due to Rain's short casting time, large range and long duration, no enemy stood a chance.

Yeah, those bandits are really tough buggers. As a melee fighter, I basically wouldn't touch them unless I'm level 25+ and have the light dragon hunter armour (or one of the other guilds' equivalent).

On other news, I've recently been playing G3 hardcore. Since mages are so boring and cheap (98% of the time, all you do is spam fireballs and retreat as soon as your opponent(s) get too close) and rangers are basically just an underpowered version of a mage (plus a few FPS elements, which I don't particularly care for), I've decided to go for melee.

I've managed to get three characters killed and they actually all died in the very same spot: the cave near Montera where you have to kill the wolves for that merc guy. The first time I thought "let's kill those wolves real quick, I'm level 12, so they'll pose no problem". The second time I thought "okay, let's do those stupid wolves. Last time I died, but that was just a freak accident and this time I'll be more careful". And the last time I thought "okay, I'm level 20 now, I can fight a whole bison herd, and bisons are 4 times the XP of wolves, so it should be a piece of cake".

But the problem is that due to the shitty combat system, wolves are extremely lethal in caves since every time you can knocked to the ground, you get flung against the wall of the cave and when you finally manage to stand up (after getting bit a few more times), all you do is slide down a few centimetres, which is just enough time for the wolves to get another attack in that throws you to the ground. Repeat that three times and you're toast.

But now I've created a fourth character (who has avoided that blasted cave so far  ) who's currently level 22. So far, I've done quests in Reddock, Kap Dun, Montera, Silden and Geldern.

Game: Gothic 3
Name: Jonn's melee fighter #4
Level: 22
Character: I mainly invested into life (600 something) and strength (150 something). Apart from a few combat perks, acrobatics and the one that cuts down the endurance cost of running (whatever it's called), I learned to open heavy locks.

Okay, it's finally time to revive this thread and let's hope that it never dies again.

My copy of Forsaken Gods has arrived just this morning and I'm going to play it Stewbob-style.

For all of you who don't know, Stewbob is a guy who played G1 hardcore on his first playthrough with no prior knowledge of the game except for having played G2. Despite this, he managed to do incredibly well and get very far into the game before eventually meeting his untimely demise. He covered his adventures in an extensive series of posts in the predecessor to this post. If you want to read it up, here is the page where his posts start: http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=332549&page=14

I've played all previous Gothic games multiple times, but I've on purpose avoided info about Forsaken Gods so that my experience will be as fresh as possible. I've not yet decided what sort of character I want to build, so I'll just start playing and then see where it takes me.

Oh, and if you wonder about the above post, I've lost that savegame when my character was about level 60 due to a very stupid mistake the designers made. If you deinstall the G3 demo and check the box for removing savegames, it removes ALL G3 savegames, not just the ones from the demo...

Forsaken Gods

Dang. I gotta edit the list script to add FG into it.

Der_Jonn
22.11.2008, 16:14
Okay, so I've played this early beta version of Forsaken Gods for a few hours.

The biggest issue so far is the language. The DVD I bought from amazon.de doesn't allow you to chose the language in which the game will be installed. So I have to play the game mostly in German. Mostly meaning that there are many instances where things just weren't translated, so you'll see a lot of generic NPCs with English names. There was even one line of text that was spoken in German ("Ich will damit sagen, dass er ganz Myrthana Frieden und Wohlstand bringen wird.") but the text was partly French and partly English ("Je voudrais dire qu'il bring peace and prosperity to all of Myrthana").
Also there are plenty of instances where a particular text doesn't fit into the proper window, so it's just cut off. And best of all, there are some pieces of dialogue that are simply missing, so the characters will just do their normal "talking gestures" but there aren't any voices or texts.

Didn't anyone actually test the German version even once for ten minutes?

---End of rant---

I've done a few of the start quests (holy shit, 4k XP for some stupid quest that takes 10 minutes... quest XP was already insanely high in G3, but this is just fucking retarded... why would anyone actually want to kill opponents that give 50 or 100 XP when you get several thousand XP for every little quest) and I also went to Geldern and Trelis. So far everything except some of the arena fights (not being able to attack without endurance is annoying) has been very easy (I play on normal difficulty). Apart from learning how to sharpen weapons, I've put all LPs into life and endurance.

Hi,

i just started a new Gothic 1 hardcore challenge.
No reloads, no cheesy tactics and no console.

Game: Gothic 1 (w/ some texture patches)
Name: hardcore student
Guild: probably bandits and then mercenaries
Level: 5
Two-handed swords and bow style

Right now i just entered the swamp camp and will do some quests. My last no-reload challenge (i didnt even know this thread then) ended with a dumb swampshark at lvl 8, i will be more cautious this time.

I probably need some advice here and there because some time past since i last finished the game.:)

Damn this was close.
Thought i fight against two wolves and suddenly their friends came out of nowhere. I tried to run away but couldnt get this one wolf out of attack focus - even when i put my sword away. ? Somehow i slowly retreated backwards and survived with 2 hp. Can someone explain me how i end a fight properly next time if i have to retreat? Dunno how this happened.

I'm lvl 8 now and nearly all quests done for Chapter 1. Will hunt some more till lvl 9-10 and join the bandits.

Unfortunately its not a good idea to hunt at night in the woods. Not because of the monsters, but because you can trip and fall off a cliff and die (the first forest you see in the game).:(

Lvl 9

I'll try again. ^^

Okay guys, like I've said I felt a craving for Gothic so I figured I'd submit my challenge here - any other way to play it right now would probably be boring. Also, this time I'm in it for real, so I'll be extra careful and focus on beating the game not so much as roleplaying; those dialogues have gotten a wee bit boring after hearing them roughly 50 times before.

Game: Gothic
Name: Faust
Desired class: Templar

This time I'll try joining the Sect Camp, which is probably the one I've played the least. Naturally, not much choices here for a build - basically I'll try to make it as uber as possible though I will invest some points in mana also in order to be proficient with the magic of the Sleeper, I've never really used it (seeing how you cannot become a Guru, this is the next best thing).

Currently I'm in the hill overlooking the Old Camp, fresh in from outside the Barrier. The view is breathtaking and I'm rather being a douche tempting my fate this close to the edge.

Strength: 104
Mana: 40
1h and 2h skill: Master
forgot my level, but I think it's about 20.

Anyway, I had a very close call just a minute ago. I was beating the crap out of the guards at the south gates, and I knocked them all down but had like, 10 HP left so I started drinking potions. But some of the guards stood up, and started attacking me again. I started running towards Diego cuz I had almost no HP, but one of them knocked me down. I was like: FUCK!! I'M DEAD§burn
but then, right before they killed me, Diego shot them with his bow. I was like: "WHEW!!! THANKS A MILLION DIEGO!!!"
Let's see if I can beat the game this time...

Desired Build: a lot of meele and magic to kill all the monsters in my way before they can kill me (which is not hard due to lack of armor and bugged Gorns)

Just reached chapter 2 and stopped playing. I became Rouge instead of Shadow, because I've been playing a lot in the Old Camp in my last games and it doesn't make much difference. No dangerous situations so far.

Finally!...

Congratz!
Did you play with or without Addon?

My char is now lvl 22 Chapter 5.
I had to reload one time due to a bug. While speaking to Lee he attacked me (i had his axe :D) and from then on the interface was corrupt. I couldn't open any Dialogue/Menu except the inventar. I tried some stuff, but i wasn't able to revert it to functioning. :(

In this attempt i did many you could say "stupid" things, by trying to drop as many NPC's (not the weaklings, i'm not that mean) as possible and had to find out the hard way, which are invulnerable. There were some close calls due to that. Well at least i learned much stuff through this. And the gods were in favor of my char he survived it all to now. :)

The most important thing is to choose confrontations wisely, prepare by buying and wearing the appropriate Items (protection e.g.) and have an escape plan and use it if you see your health drop.

Depends. But since I understand it's a new story and all I'd say no.

Yeah, the basic idea is that story overhauls are a no-no, at least for the moment. I'd say that some mods which add minor story elements, such as a few new quests and at the most a minor new storyline that doesn't undo the existing one and doesn't add any new areas, is acceptable (Blood Night would in my mind be the most extreme example I would consider acceptable). However, if people are interested, I could add a new category into the HC challenge lists which would be for all three games played with "heavy" mods.

Okay, with the recent release of CP 1.7, I've started another G3 game. I'm playing with normal difficulty, but since I have alternate balancing and the new AI activated, things shouldn't get too easy.

I've played to level 13 now and so far I'm very pleased with the new patch. Melee combat is much better now (though still inferior to G2). Yet another proof that Forsaken Gods is a pile of shit: even though it's an official add-on made by a team of professionals, it's attempt at fixing the combat system is ridiculously bad compared to what the CP team has come up with in their free time.

Game: Gothic 3 CP 1.7
Character name: John Jackson
Difficulty: medium with alternate balancing and new AI
Level: 13

After dealing with the orcs in Ardea, I went to beat up Lester only to discover that 1) defeating single NPCs is much harder now and 2) Lester doesn't have the temple key at the start of the game anymore. I then proceeded to do the usual starting quests (but wisely omitting to try beating up the orc captain at the pig farm between Reddock and Kap Dun) and was pleasantly surprised at the arena fights. They were a lot more challenging and interesting now, but still very manageable at medium difficulty even without any combat training (apart from investing 30LP into life).

jimokalos
27.03.2009, 14:15
Try it on hard.On hard you will barely be able to kill the first orc in Ardea.

Der_Jonn
27.03.2009, 22:07
That's exactly why I'm not playing on hard.

Playing 1.6 on hard was already very challenging in CP 1.6, but with 1.7 and alternate balancing it's bound to be almost impossible.

DTR
27.03.2009, 22:46
I actually enjoy the current Hard scene immensely.
This time the Orcs are actually ORCS. Twice the size, double the strenght of a comparative human. They won the war, its not like they should be weak.

If 1 on 1 against an orc is desperate, at low levels then the game has taken a huge leap towards the earlier gothics. And that is brilliant.

Hey Hellbilly, do you think it would be possible to add a line to the graveyard and hall of fame of G3 in your database script?
Just "Difficulty:" with a space for free writing I guess.

And I'd suggest that normal G3 can qualify only on hard, and alternative G3 only on medium or hard, but you guys tell me.

Time for an update.

I've played some more and I'm now level 23 and I'm close to getting mana regeneration now (those mana potions do cost quite a lot). I've done most of the quests in Montera and Silden and some of the quests in Geldern and Trelis. So far pretty standard stuff and no near-death experiences yet.

Alright, Gothic 1 is asking for it. I swear I'll beat that game once and for all! Starting a new attempt.

Hero Name: Dead
Desired Class: Mage
Build: 1h + magic
Strategies: Do ALL the possible quests I can. Kill every single NPC after it has served it's purpose, and is no longer needed to complete the game. In general, I will kill everything.

@bellingsumn: but dude, that's cheating  1 death per chapter is NOT hardcore. This way you're only fooling yourself, not us. I admit I use cheats and reloads but only if the game has bugged so hard that I can't complete it, or if I have the misfortune of stepping on a moonline(this is how I call it when you walk around and suddenly you fly in the sky, fall and die. That's a glitch/bug, and it causes the death of your hero, therefor it shouldn't be counted as a real death.) There are also more numbers of bugged ways you could die but I'm not gonna count them all.

Here's antother update on my G3 attempt.

I've now done most of the easier quests in Myrthana, with the notable exceptions of the quests in Gotha, Vengard and Faring. So far the most dangerous situation occured in Kap Dun where I accidentally started a revolution (I found Wenzel's Sword and wanted to give it to him, but the only dialogue option he had was "Let's attack now" or something similar, so I selected this and expected him to say something along the lines of "I need to get my sword back first", but instead this actually triggered the revolution and the orcs immediately came swarming in and started attacking me) and I only narrowly survived the experience.

I then headed towards Varrant and quickly made my way to Saturas to learn Mana Regeneration (wow, 30 LP is a pretty steep price) and did a few quests here and there in Varrant. Currently I'm level 29 and I newly arrived in Ben Erai.

Game: Gothic 3 CP 1.7

[edit]
Oh yeah, and if some1 beats my mana without cheats/codes, I'll admit he's the best gothic 1 mage ever :p

I had 317, you either have suboptimal rings/amulett (best is +25 for the amulett and +15 and +10 for the rings) or missed a potion.
You probably missed that one:

the way is shown from 2. to 4.

Am I the best gothic 1 mage ever now? :D

That one. I used the summon scrolls a lot. And ofcourse, after they served their short-living purpose, they were blasted away with Storm ov Fire. And I might have double-killed some(if not most) NPCs, since I beat most of them up to gain experience in earlier levels but whatever. At the end I killed them all.

As for the mana... damn, I totally saw that commng §cry I missed the potion in the pictures 2-4.

And yes, you ARE the B-E-S-T mage ever :p

Alwin
25.05.2009, 14:59
Ok, 'cause I was yet to see anyone try that one. In that case, I'll start a character.

Name: Maul
Target ending: Probably Beliar - I've done Innos and Xardas before.
Target skills: I'll try a fighter-archer hybrid - one that really does add points to Archery. For melee skills, it's a toss-up between sword/shield and dual-wielding.

EDIT: Difficulty Hard, 'cause it's the hardcore challenge. AB/AltAI on.
EDIT 2: Let's see the second attempt. Discovery: It seems like on Medium, you won't be instakilled by an orc in Ardea (even though they're red), while on Hard, it will be so. Either that, or you will be killed by blows aimed for you.

Alwin
25.05.2009, 16:50
The fight of Ardea started, and it was tougher than on Medium: I found myself running from orcs all the time. At first, I was singling out scouts and killing them in duels, then running around from groups of orcs, most often the orc boss. Eventually, after the slaves died, the orcs started falling out too, mostly due to Gorn, but also a few scouts and a warrior fell to me and probably one or two from the other "old boys". This is where I noticed that while slaves and the elder were fighting orcs in one side of the village, next to the south gate, Milten was starting to roast meat. I reminded him of his job by luring 3 orcs onto the group, and at this point, things were looking up. Finally, as the chief died, everyone else ran off - probably 4 or 5 orcs were alive at this point.

I looted the fallen and opened some of the chests, finding some useful equipment, then talked to whoever I needed to talk to and left with Gorn towards Reddock. There, I bought a set of farmers' clothing, sold all the orc weapons and stuff and told Javier of whatever was available. Then I decided to fight the two rebels. Copper went down easily to a thrust+power attack tactics. I was hesitant to fight Joey 'cause of the halberd, then I discovered he switches to a sword/shield combo during the fight, for the third time now. :) After almost leaving the arena and getting knocked down to somewhere around 20 HP, Joey got defeated too. I slept until morning and saved here.

Progress since beginning: Ardea liberated, Reddock visited, Copper and Joey defeated. I'm either level 3 or 4, I think.

EDIT: This danger level thing: me like.
Danger level (0-10): 6 - I died twice because I was surprised from behind and because I tried taking on the boss, which proved to be a bad idea when he spinattacked me to death. Good thing I wasn't far in. :)

Day 1

If anyone but me is reading this, that means you've found my diary. I suppose a bit of background is in order, but I'm exhausted and want to sleep, so don't expect me to give you my life story.

If you don't already know who I am, I banished the Sleeper. I was also inside the temple when it collapsed. After that, I don't remember much before I was in the middle of a pentagram in front of Xardas, the necromancer. I slowly got my senses back while he explained that he had summoned me, that I had been lying under a pile of rocks for three days and that the Sleeper had called for help when he died. All I remember from that part is that there were dragons involved, and that I would have to get some "eye" artifact from a nearby city to fight these things.

All the time while I was listening, I could barely stand and had a hard time focusing. Xardas told me I'd get my strength back eventually, but I don't think it's anything more than him trying to cheer me up. I feel so weak and miserable, and my body feels foreign. I should have been dead, and while I'm thankful towards Xardas for rescuing me, I am not going to seek out any new trouble. I just want to retire from the whole "adventure" business and lead a peaceful life. Someone else will step up and be a hero, I'm sure. I'm in such poor shape, I'm sure if I could train myself to become my old self, anyone could. Why should I?

Xardas told me I could take anything in his tower, and while I felt a little bad for taking him up on the offer without really meaning to get his eye or fight his dragons, I realized I should get equipped unless I wanted to take the chance of stumbling unarmed on any wild beasts on my way to town.

Upstairs, I found a few books. I skimmed through them. A few of them gave tips about hunting and taking trophies. That sounds like a job I could enjoy. Just predictable, comfortable hunting. Making a living off of skins, claws, teeth, whatever. There were some books about alchemy, too. I don't know about that. Sure, I want to stay out of trouble, but I don't want to rot away in a lab, either. The potions sound very useful, though. Perhaps I'll learn some alchemy skills to be able to increase my abilities in case I'll need it when these things Xardas mentioned arrive, if they ever will. I found a dagger, too, but it felt so small and unwieldy that I picked a branch of firewood instead. It's fairly short, but sturdy and easy to grip.

I decided to use this diary to keep track of time and my progress and left it at the tower while I went outside exploring the area. Not too many yards outside, I had my first encounter. Goblin. I'm so used to them being little more than a nuisance, I didn't worry much until it actually HIT me. It hurt like hell. Before, even with my armor off, I'd barely flinch, but this was almost stunning. And in a different way than the undead and demons I fought before. This was a little bugger the size of a kid, hitting me with a stick, and I'm sure it could have finished me in seconds. I felt horrible, being beaten to death by a little goblin. Panicking, I swung wildly at it, and it managed to circle around me and hit me in the back. Rage and instinct took over, and I clubbed it to death with the branch. I saw some nearby healing plants, ate some, put the rest on my bruises and rested until I felt better again.

After the initial shock, the rest of the encounters (and it was pretty packed with critters around there - probably a good thing if I'm going to pick up hunting!) weren't too bad. I found an underground path to a little valley, talked to my old buddy Lester from the swamp camp (huh, apparently I'm not that far from the colony.. But I'm sure I'm not in it) and killed the wolves, rats, bloodflies and goblins in the area. Oh, and even a couple field raiders. I kept my distance and killed them cautiously, one by one. I'm starting to feel a little more confident and am sure I can take some more punishment than I could before I went out of the tower this morning, but I doubt I'll ever be the way I was.

By the way - wow, there's so much STUFF lying around. I think I found a few secret stashes (of which the owners might be dead, I don't know), and a lot of it was probably goblins' loot, they seem to be all over the place here. Either way, I'll have a great headstart, money-wise, when I get to town. I found a sword in a cave, too. It's not in the best of shapes, but oh well. It beats the branch. I feel safer holding a sword hilt again.

I'm tired. I'm back in Xardas' tower, on his bed, and have been scribbling away for an hour or more. I need to get some sleep. I hope I feel better tomorrow.

Day 2

I got up early today, but Xardas was still standing at the same spot when I woke up, reading. I wonder if he slept at all. At any rate, I'm in a much better mood today than I was yesterday. On my way to town, I stumbled upon a few critters, and then I saw a smug-looking guy standing by some stairs. He stopped me as I was walking past and kept trying to convince me to follow him to his "leader". When I refused, he attacked me! Coordination, blocking, movement, everything involved in a duel felt so different and awkward. My muscles were hurting when I dealt the last blow, and I had taken a few whacks. I'm just happy he didn't have a sword.

After looking around a bit, I came to a farm. The landowner had some protective clothes he'd sell to me, and I spent most of the day there working for him and lowering the price for the clothes. I don't like his attitude much, but he was fair with the work and the price for the clothes. I also picked up a tip about telling the guards I was a blacksmith needing to get my tools repaired.

I went further down the road (met Canthar, shady fellow, don't like him either) and eventually arrived at Khorinis. All the time, I kept taking my time with the wild beasts and killing the ones I could get at, both because I needed the practice and because I didn't want any ambushes.

After bluffing my way into town, a paladin named Lothar greeted me and preached a bunch of rules. Self-righteous type, but the rules are fair. He gave me some directions. I met Bosper, a bow trader who I hope to work for. He offered me to hunt for him - exactly what I'm looking for! He seemed nice, too. I need the approval of the other employers in town before I can work for him, but he asked me to prove myself by fetching six wolf pelts. Damn! I should have left some of the wolves I met earlier alone. Anyways, I want to do a good job with those pelts, but first I need a good night's sleep. I found an inn while working on getting accepted by the "masters", or employers, which is where I'm sitting while writing right now. I bought a new sword, by the way, but it's still a bit too heavy for me. It's a short sword of good quality, unlike the one I'm wielding now.

Oh, and. I met a water mage named Vatras. It calmed me to see him; old, wise, calm, friendly, and with a look that seemed knowing and understanding. He wanted me to tell him about my mission and where I came from, so I did. I feel a little bad about Xardas, but then again, he's got no business dragging me into his wars. I feel calm and safe with Vatras and all of the paladins around, and I can't imagine the city getting overwhelmed by anything anytime soon. Unless the king/peasant tensions makes a civil war break out, perhaps.. But I write too much again. Tomorrow I'll scout out the city and get the wolf pelts for Bosper.

Part 2:

After arriving to Reddock, I decided to go cleanse the underground pass of Reddock. Taking Copper with me, I singled out the goblins and dealt with the lizards. Eventually, the pass was clean. I found a Hashishin Knife in a Heavy Chest, weaker than the Orc Slayer but poisonous. With this, I made my way to Cape Dun. I fulfilled the petty tasks of the villagers, then decided to go wolf hunting. I realised at this point that in 1-on-1 fights against animals, this knife would be useless, since it poisons upon thrusting, but with the wolves' attention focused on the new companion Cyrus, I managed to dispatch all of them - having a few close calls in the process. (Generally, if I got knocked down I just waited 'till the wolf was fighting Cyrus then stood up, poisoned and slowly killed the wolf, waiting in between every two strikes to avoid a backlash from the wolf.) I then went to learn skinning animals from Jens after rescuing Harek from the woods and bringing him to Jens' hut.

I entered the Temple and fought Raven. He was pretty hard to beat because I spammed attacks recklessly not realizing he can also damage me while he blocks, but I changed to a more careful style and killed him with enough health left. With his Stone Tables I could tell Saturas everything about the temples I never went to^^
I sacrificed some life to use Beliar's Claw and went to the valley of mines and tear through everything, but I avoid more than one orc at once. After getting the information from Garond I go to Diego and tell him to join me and that's where our long friendship comes to an abrupt end. Before I went to him I swapped to the armor of the Ring of Water, but when he joined me I thought, hey, he's my best friend, he wouldn't kill me just because I wear another armor. WRONG! I swapped to the bandit's armor, one strike from Diego, his sword rammed into my stomach and it was over. He showed no regret!

I was killing it well in rhythm, but that bastard Copper poked him and so I got out of said rhythm, getting owned pretty quickly.

EDIT: Oh yes, sorry 'bout that. Level 8 upon time of death, with the same stats as before, basically (Hunting 125, Strength something like 105). Name: Comrade
Level: 12

Chapter 3
Well that was kinda stupid death :/. While I was fighting with bandits at the dexter tower some farmers who have escaped the farm with MALAK a while ago came to help me fight the bandits. After we won a fight I thought to beat farmers for some exp, so I tried that but MALAK seemed to be tougher than I imagined so I ran away from farmers and started shooting at them with my bow from the distance and killed them... Well I thought nobody will miss those farmers anyway :D (I was wrong :(). So then I came to Greg to talk with him about that Dexter business. Oh by the way Greg was sitting in the house that used to be Dexter's, and Greg wasn't able to see how I killed those poor farmers, because usually people can't see through the walls! (well but this is Gothic ). So I walked in the house where Greg was sitting comfortably in the armchair, and when he heard my steps (yeh he heard my very own steps sound) he jumped up, draw his sword and stabbed me before I was able to understand wtf is happening...
So this is the end of my story... :(

After a lengthy pause from Gothic, I decided to have another go at NotR hardcore. Since I've already completed the hardcore challenge as a Magician of Fire and as a dexterty based Paladin, I'll be playing a one hand strength character this time. To make this more interesting, I've placed some restrictions on myself:

- I have to become a merc (since mercs get the best one hand weapons in late game, that isn't much of a restriction, despite the fact that mercs are overall the weakest guild)
- I'm not allowed to spend any LPs on dexterty (thus giving me a much slower start because I can't use bows or the Rapier and the Master Sword)
- I'm not allowed to pray to Beliar (meaning that I can't get lots of gold at the beginning by sacraficing mana to Beliar)
- I'm not allowed to use Beliar's Claw
- I'm not allowed to save 4 LPs at every LP cost threshold by getting 5 points for the old price (for instance when you have 59 strength, it's possible to get 5 strength at the price of 10 LPs, whereas regularly training to 64 strength would cost an additional 14 LPs)
- In the first two chapters, I'm not allowed to transform into a Dragon Snapper, Shadow Beast or Fire Lizard

Well, hello everybody.
I've been reading these "hardcore" topics recently and that really made me keen on trying this kind of challenge. I proudly announce my first attempt on playing hardcore!
Game: Gothic 1
Desired character: Shadow->Guard->Mercenary (I don't like playing as a mage in g1)
Name: Fed (so interesting, huh?)
Now, I've played gothic many, many times, so to prevent boredom I'll be playing in russian. It's not my native language, but I think I'll get the gist of every conversation. Besides, I remember most of the dialogues by heart anyway.
I don't belive I'll beat the game - I played many times, but usually finished in the fifth chapter, before entering the sleeper's temple. That place is not for my nerves, seriously.

i was lv 20 before i even went out of the valley of mines for the first time, how did you manage all the seekers?

I didn't. I killed the first one with an Ice Block scroll, but I just ran past all the other ones. Besides, fighting straight up with Seekers is never a good idea for a melee character since seekers can cast Rain of Fire, and 500 magic damage is nothing to be scoffed at in hardcore.

The main reason why I entered the third chapter relatively quickly is that I now have a much stronger armour, so Jharkendar will be much easier. Also being in the third chapter means that I will get more experience for many quests and that some merchants will have good new items.
After Jharkendar I'll go back to the Valley of Mines to clean up some more of the monsters there. I won't have Diego with me, but I think that the stronger armour more than makes up for that.

Edit:
Another quick update:
I've killed Raven and I've convinced Vatras, Xardas and Pyrokar to go to the sun circle. Right now I feel very good about my character, especially since I now have a total of 140 protection from weapons, thanks to the Warrior Set, so I no longer have to fear creatures like Wargs or Shadow Beasts, and Orc Warriors shouldn't be too much of challenge now either. I do however still have the problem that I have a melee character, which is just so much weaker than a dex character or a mage in hardcore. It's especially annoying not to be able to really fight against all those seekers.
Next, I will do some cleaning up in the VoM before I enter the fourth chapter.

Game: Gothic II Night of the Raven
Hero Name: 1h Merc
Guild: Dragon Hunter
Stats (without items): 1h at 66, strength at 72, learnt to forge the first sword and the Ore Bastard Sword, learnt to pick locks and to understand the first language, 2 unspent LP
Level: 22
Main Quest Progress: Chapter 3, Jharkendar finished, all three mages are already waiting at the sun circle
Time played: 14:54

So I just died -.-
After killing the dragon in the swamp, I wanted to clean up the rest of the monsters there. After killing a few Swamp Sharks, I wanted to take on two Lizard Men. As a standard precaution, I took a speed potion (not the regular ones, the ones that Samuel sells; no idea what they're called in the English version), so there really wasn't anything that could go wrong.
I started to engage them, but didn't do a very good job at fighting them, so I took damage faster than I was comfortable with, so at around 60% health, I turned around and fled. The only problem was that I walked right into the knee-deep swamp water so I was slowed down to a crawl. The Lizard Men were right behind me and started hacking away at me and before I could think of a way to get out of my predicament, the Lizard Men killed me.

Game: Gothic II Night of the Raven
Hero Name: 1h Merc
Guild: Dragon Hunter
Stats (without items): 1h at 66, strength at 87, learnt to forge the first sword and the Ore Bastard Sword, learnt to pick locksto understand the first language, and to take blood and scales from dragons, 11 unspent LP
Level: 28
Main Quest Progress: Chapter 4, killed one dragon
Time played: approx. 18:30
Cause of Death: two Lizard Men

Edit: added cause of death to summary

I just recently finished Gothic 1 and I was thinking to give a shot to Gothic 2 aswell since I didn't play it for a couple of months and I thought why not try it hardcore? So I guess I'll be in this thing too

Well, I guess NotR is the most rewarding one, but it's also far more difficult than G1 or G2 vanilla (whether it's more dangerous than G3 depends on the difficulty settings).
I suggest starting with G1 since it's not as difficult and since the required play time should be relatively low (so dying means you "only" lose the work of a few hours).

I decided to have another go at the G3 Hardcore challenge (Alternative everything, Hard difficulty).

Name of Character: Save0013 aka. "Arngrim"
Desired Build: 1H/Shield or dual wield, will decide later.
Desired Progression: Rebel.

Part 1 - Ardea & Reddock

Well, I started fighting. I thought that helping the big guys (i.e. Gorn and maybe Diego) would be a good way to get rid of enough orcs to make it a 1-on-1 affair before the orcs on the other side of Ardea kill off the slaves and come over here, but after just one dead scout a new influx of orcs made me scrap this plan. So I ran outside to duel a scout, who fell (refamiliarising myself with the G3 fighting system - having played through G1 once recently... to think I used to like the G1/G2 system!). Then 3 new orcs came out so I ran. 1 warrior fell in melee (plus 2 arrows), then the two others came. I ran until I found Lester, who decided to move his lazy butt and give me a hand, so these two also died. After this, I returned to the town to find a group of 3 slaves at the other side of Ardea. These served well to split up some more groups of attacking orcs (I wonder how they managed to fit into Ardea in the first place).
Eventually most of the orcs here were dead, and I returned to the marketplace area, where Diego, Gorn and Milten were finished with their respective orcs and were about to start cooking again. So I quickly lured some orcs on them to kill. They got ripped apart, and then the warlord fled! Oh noes, my world map! I ran after him (letting the scavengers attack him instead of me), until I caught him in his "escape patrol" (the place where he'll run from point A to B and then back, this happens if you pursue a fleeing foe after a liberation) and killed all three, getting stuck into a piece of terrain once and barely managing to escape the scavenger pecking at me. After getting the map and his potions (I used 7, and got about 4 from the warlord and the village elder's table), I followed Gorn to Reddock, where I sold some stuff, bought some leather armor and fought the two arena combatants, getting 2 strength and yet another level. And this is where I rested. Next chapter: I'll try cleaning the tunnels with Copper, getting the hungry wolves with said Copper and hanging around in Cape Dun.

Danger level (0-10): 5. (Scavenger+bugged terrain=near death.)
Level: 3
New stats: +2 Str (Arena fights)
New skills: None so far.

Part 2: Cape Dun and surroundings

Well, the tunnel was manageable. Those goblins managed to avoid trouncing me this time, but the lizards diseased me, and the disease lingered for a long time. Once, I got out of rhythm while 1v1-ing one and it almost killed me, so I had to run away and leave Copper in a mess. He was still standing by the time I was back, and I backstabbed the lizards one after the other. The minecrawler posed no problems (the fact that they're blockable is a great thing). Got a Hashishin knife from the chest at the end of the tunnel.

Wolves were nasty - one of them almost killed me again, and it didn't help that my endurance didn't regenerate. I barely managed to run away from a menacing growling furry machine of doom at one point, then came back with sweet revenge (and good tactics using Copper - once again, the "get knocked down then wait for Copper to draw fire" tactic worked). Told Copper to wait not far from Cape Dun as I entered - before that, though, I decided to screw rebel ethics for a moment and rob Jens. Turned out to be a good idea, as he had not one but two cure disease potions! Just in time. I roasted my meat there too.

In Cape Dun, I did the Deckard, Cyrus and Esiel quests, talked with Phil to discuss the rebellion, collected the wolf skins and decided not to visit the arena at this point. I did talk to Gamal's guard in his tent though - he told me to scram from Gamal's chest, so I decided to test a Sleep scroll I had on me. The chest was worthless, the scroll was mostly wasted, but at least I got the guard's spear (worth 125 G).

I then went out to chase for Harek, and offered to hide him at Jens, after getting him to follow me and chase down the last 3 hungry wolves. Took Harek to Jens and got the potions. Then I walked to Topork's farm and challenged the orc - defeated him with light injuries, but a surprise scavenger chased me off his body and I only got his Agash. A pity. (He woulda killed me if I hadn't run away, I think...) And Kliff, of course.

So I collected Copper and walked back towards Reddock, not through the tunnels though - to shoot some deer. (Killing them with 2 hits is difficult, but with a little practice, it's doable.) I bought some poisoned arrows before though for this purpose - 3 only, but each of them killed one. Had a near-death situation as a wolf and a boar ambushed us at one point, but the trio did them in. (As always, I dealt 90% of the damage.)

As I was on my way though, one more problem arose - I couldn't avoid the orc patrol between Ardea and Cape Dun and one orc warrior attacked Copper. This made for an interesting battle. The two of us (Copper and me - Kliff decided to just watch) attacked, then I noticed scavengers behind us, so I attacked. Good thing Kliff joined in as there were two! I had to 1v2 them for a few moments though, so I almost got killed again. As I drank yet another healing potion, the warrior killed Copper. That enraged my character a lot, so I stabbed him in the gut, and with a strong blow, knocked him down. Then it was time for the finishing move! (The rest of the orcs were far from the site of the battle.) Not deciding to risk two more orcs with Kliff (the orc got in a few strikes on Kliff after Copper died and he was at 2/3 health after that, from full), I took the smith to Reddock, where I decided to take a wooden shield from the armory. Not that I can use it yet, and when I can I can probably get Fadi's skull shield in Cape Dun anyway, but you never know...

Danger level (0-10): 7. (Fairly dangerous. Several scary situations.)
Level: 8, no points spent so far. (I'm thinking whether I should get pick difficult locks or hunting skills - soon I'll have enough money for one of these.)
New stats: Now 103 Str, 102 Hunting, 11 Alchemy/Smithing/Thievery.
New skills: None so far.

Diary

At the first day I made my way into the Old Camp. On the way I´ve killed all the "monsters", except for the goblin. After the smalltalks with Diego, Lorry(?) and the two hunters from the New Camp I talked to the important people in the old Camp, but for now I´ve not made all quests. Bloodwyn collected no ore from me. And now I'm in front of Mordrag who will lead me to my future - the New Camp. :)

Ok so I'm gonna start G3 hardcore, well actualy already started so here it is:

Name: Gor-haz
Desired build: 1hand sword, crossbows and maybe some of adanos' spells
Desired guild: Rebel / Nomad
(Alternative everything : Medium difficulty)

So as soon as I started the game, I cleared Ardea with drinking only one healing potion. The boss fell really easy (of course he did cause Diego was helping with his bow;) ) and the rest of the orcs werent a big problem, but some of the warriors were a real pain in the butt. After clearing Ardea, I got to reddock with Gorn, but didn´t do any quests except the arena quests and clearing the exit. I just solo´d the exit, the goblins weren´t much strong and I easily killed the lizards with my bow, minecrawler = fireballs + bow.
So then I decided to sell all the trash that I didn´t want and I had about 4000 gold coins or 3500.. Then I got to Cape Dun = Trained Crossbow, up to 120 str so I could have the Broadsword, learnt how to make exuces and completed all the quests in cape dun except the bandit´s and ortega thing.
Also, I took the slave of the hashishin (can´t remember the name right now) to Jens. Almost got killed by the hungry wolves but I managed to do them in.
Bought a leather armor so now I´ve got
= leather armor, broadsword, crossbow
= 120 str, 26 thieving, 13 alchemy if I remember correctly and the ancient knowledge bonus I got from the bookshelf of ardea.
Did the Jack and the bilge rats quest too.
It´s really good if you start with the crossbow skill you can easily shoot deer at one shot :)

I´m probably going to do the rest of the reddock quests now and then go to Montera:)
Cheers until then§wink

After I arrived in the New Camp, I’ve done all available quests. I was one time the water carrier for Lefty. The next day he had greeted my fist.:gratz Homer’s Lurker was easy with some scrolls like Fireball. After I left the New Camp I “sneaked” to the Old Mine. On that way I nearly shook hands with the death for the first time, as I fought against a wolf. Then, as I left the Old Mine again, I went back to Lares. As I arrived in the Old Camp I’ve given the list back to Diego and a few minutes later that one Baal led me to the Sect Camp. Of course I accomplished all the quests there too. A few moments later I went back to Kharim, who was no problem with one-two tricks. ;)
So I finally went back again to Lares to get my beautiful and . . . resistant “armour”.

Ok so today I did few interesting things so here goes:

After getting the hell out of Cape Dun I stopped by the slave of the hashishin to learn acrobatics, then I made the remaining quests in Reddock which really wasn´t so hard even the orc patrols weren´t so strong as I thought they would be. Soon after I finished the Reddock quests I made my way to Montera, met the trader on the road or whoever he is and then there was my first difficult decision : If I should go and try to kill ortega and his gang or not. Well I risked it and went to the cave. I tried to lure as many as bandit´s the one-by-one way and it worked! So I cleared out the cave and then continued on the way. There I met the rebels, the guy there asked me about killing those gobos. Yeah I managed to kill them, crossbow always helps. After I killed those losers, I continued on my way. Took the "rangers outpost" way to Montera - did all the ranger quests there, the orc patrol was really strong for the two of us this time but the ranger managed to survive with something like 5 HP maybe, me too of course but I used a couple of healing potions. Then I finally came to Montera! First I went to the arena and became champ (suprisingly I only used one healing potion during all the fights:eek: ) Then I got the two slaves working for sobota and so on until I did all the quests in Montera. I sold everything "worn" I had = the bearded axes, one bastard sword, two skull shields and some other weapons.
I had about 16 000 gold = trained up to 160 STR, the "Crossbowman (advanced crossbow skill) and the advanced swordsman skill, also I learnt the Haggling (I think it´s called that) skill. So that left me with something like 10000 gold. After that I did some remaining quests I had in Montera
and got another 3000 gold coins. Then I went to Okara to give the letter from Sanford to Roland - took the slave Rufus with me. There I got the quest "Okara is looking for people" or smth like that and got them Rolland, I also cleared the mine with him, had to use a few potions there. After that I found out that I have enough money to buy the Rebel Armor so I bought it.
After getting the armor I didn´t know where to go next so I went to Gotha. I bought Gorn´s freedom which left me with only 400 gold coins. I didn´t go with him to the demon instead I lured the demon towards the outpost. 5 orcs attacking the demon that was pretty funny, but I did the finishing blow (wanted the exp). Then I cleared the rest of Gotha with Gorn but unfortunately I ran out of all the healing potions and roast meat and I only had 400 gold... So I got the teleport to the king, well actualy you know it -the temple. That was a mistake = no gold, no potions, no meat and stuck inside the capital not of humans, but orcs (seriously there are more orcs in Vengard then in Faring omg). So there were these two orc scouts standing and talking and I just thought: "Oh what the heck I can handle two scouts besides, I have a few paladins and rebels here". So I fired from my crossbow and hit one of the scouts, next thing I knew a dozen, maybe even more orcs came running after me. And then the entire temple complex was swarming with filthy orcs. Every human was fighting to death even the paladin Marcos (?) who usually stood far away from the batlle came to help. THAT was an epic fight, but unfortunately the orcs slaugthered every human they saw :D
Inculding me.. so my journey ended there dammit! :(

Cause of Death: Overrun by the orcs in the temple complex of Vengard

Anywho these were the finishing stats I think:
Level 21

161 STR
103 DEX
51 Thieving
13 Alchemy
3 Ancient Knowledge
11 Smithing I think

Wenzel´s sword, Orc crossbow, Rebel armor
Think that´s all anyways it was fun playing hardcore I´m gonna try to play it again sometime.:)
Cheers you guys and don´t run out of healing potions! That´s the thing that keeps you alive;)

@Gorn
There is a little "bug", which I use in situations like that. (ONLY in that situations:))
If You open your inventory the orcs won't attack You, so You can easily heal with pots or something else and run away. But I think for hardcore it's a lil' bit unfair.

So - next part of my

Diary

Lares told me, that I got to go to Mordrag. After I talked to this lazy fatball I went to the Sect Camp and then to Y’Berion and Kalom. At Kalom I’ve chosen the healing pots. So I made my way to the old mine again to get the Crawler-egg’s(?). After I killed the pretty good looking queen, I went to Lee to become a mercenary and learn two-handed.

http://upload.worldofplayers.de/files3/Gothic Diary 3.JPG

Again I walked to the Sect Camp. On that way I’ve already picked up that book and talked to Kalom. I slept till midnight and watched the summoning of the Sleeper. But before I went to the Orc-graveyard, I visited Lee again to get better armour and learn two-handed mastery.
So I went into the Orc-graveyard. After Lukor become crazy and died I left the graveyard and talked to Angar. I followed his words and went to Cronos and then to Saturas. Now I’ll make my Journey to find the 4 Focus Stones.

Ok, I kinda want to get this one finished already although I failed numerous times on it (mainly due to being brave). Finish Gothic without wearing an armor (or unequipping it immediately when you get one as you join a guild). Also playtime must be over 15 hours so I don't run through the game stupidly and then have too little hp and lp at the end.

Diary

At first I searched the Focus-stone with Milten. The 5-6 undeads were no problem, so I headed a few minutes later for Diego. I’ve already used the scroll for the troll, to get a little bit more exp. before, but even without it, I was able to handle it. So I moved on to the ruins. At first I cleaned the canyon but of course also Gorn wanted to clean it. . .
So I walked up again to the ruins. I was very careful on that damn freaking tree. :P
And after a few minutes the stone and a troll corpse was mine. Then I went to Lester and bla bla bla.
After my “journey” I went back again to Saturas to give him the stones and get my new Armour from Lee. So the next chapter starts and I “tried” to talk with the Fire Mage’s. At least with one - Milten. So I also talked to Diego and then again to Gorn and Lester. . . As I went back to Saturas he finally told me about Xardas, so I moved my ass to him. After his “riddle” and his daemon I talked to him and did again my job. I saved Ur-Shak, talked to him and then again to Xardas. Now I’m on my way into the Free mine.

^Careful in the free mine, i think you know that Gorn has "hallucinations" on this part of the game :).

Yeah, just leave Gorn at the beginning when you've killed the initial guards (you can'tl eave him behind before) and always stay away from him at least like 20 metres. Then tell him to wait at the beginning and just go the lower way guarded by the Minecrawler Warriors. Many players do the route through the guards, but it's far more dangerous because you'reg etting shot at while climbing down ladders and such. If you want to kill them go the alternative path with the Minecarwler Warriors and then kill them going the normal path from the other side.

Can i start hardcore in gothic 3 right now or i'll have to begin from Gothic 1?

Of course you can, but if you want to try G1+NotR+G3 all in one hardcore try, do it. :D

Good luck on your no armour attempt, Blubbler.

I remember my own quite vividly. Playing without armour is truly great fun in hardcore as it makes even routine fights exciting because there is just so little room for error.

Since it was mentioned, I'll offer my two cents on the Free Mine.
I think the best strategy here is to not fight the guards at all. You don't have to fight Jackal and the other two guards in front of the mine, you can simply wait for Gorn to come down and do the job while you take your sweet time to open the gate (and maybe smoke some samp weed to kill the time ;) ).
Once inside, I would simply jump down to the left of the bridge and simply ignore the guards. Sometimes one of them does jump down to follow you, but a single guard shouldn't really be dangerous.
Just make sure to stay outside of the aggro range of the first Mine Crawler while you deal with your pursuer. My failure to do that was what cost me my life on my no armour attempt :( .

And now for something completely different...

I've started another NotR game and this time I'm going to try to complete the game without using any scrolls. My character is going to be a ranger/mage hybrid. The reason I chose such a build is that a ranger is the only kind of character that can realistically hope to take on the dragons without scrolls in the fourth chapter and a mage is the only character that can comfortably do Irdorath without any scrolls. Especially the UD is very hard to defeat if you can't at the very least freeze him with Wave of Ice.
But even so this might well be more than I can handle :)

I've already put in more than 6 hours of playtime and so far I'm doing very well, but then again scroll are hardly a necessity in the first chapter (though they would of course make many things easier).

Part 3: From Cape Dun to Montera

So, I decided to try hunting some bandits next with Cyrus. Before that, though, I took the rebels' gold off Jack and killed his bilge rats for him - taking out one with my bow (and finishing him off with my sword when he got to me with his little health) and fighting the two others simultaneously. I practiced a few 1v2 fighting techniques here, but as a safety measure when I got to slightly below half HP I lured them to Jack so he could take one out (or occupy one, as in this case).

After this, I teleported to Cape Dun to get Cyrus and after getting some hunting skills (Stalking, Skin animals, Take teeth and claws) wandered off towards the Vengard siege force. I didn't plan to kill Ortega's gang at this point, thinking they'd be way too powerful, but I remembered there were a few bandits nearby. Well, the first group was near a ruined house - usually where I get my first guaranteed content chest, but this time, I got a Hashishin bow from there, quite useful. Defeating the bandits was easy, since as always, the bandits were fighting a boar when we came, so the battle was broken up into 3 1v1 fights (I rushed at the archer, taking him out easily, while Cyrus took out another, then the two of us helped the boar before killing and cooking it).

The next group was a group of five and was a tougher fight. I shot at the Strong Bandit to designate Cyrus' target - he shot a few times before another closed in on him and attacked him. One normal bandit came at me, who I defeated with minor difficulties - using a Hashishin knife/Orcslayer switchoff trick, allowing the poison to take effect while I fight rather defensively, only exploting obvious openings. Meanwhile, however, it turned out that the bandit and a few others practicing archery were too much for Cyrus, who died - I thought he was tougher! (On the other hand, I took his Mercenary Crossbow, worth a nice 800 gp.) Well, the bandit who was in melee with Cyrus went off to fight a wolf - killing them was easy. At this point two bandits remained (someone seems to have been killed by Cyrus after all) - I used some fireball scrolls to wound one, but eventually got into a strafing archery duel with them, killing that one. Then I rushed at the remaining Strong Bandit and took him out in melee, receiving moderate injuries. At this point I had only 2 healing potions, though this bandit gave 1 more.

I teleported back to Cape Dun and fought the two adversaries in the arena. Darmok got me down to about 20 HPs but I defeated them. I got the sword and more importantly, Fadi's skull shield. Then I decided to set out to Montera.

I met Armon on the way, and killed his goblins for him, mostly luring bigger groups to the rebel groups and 1v1ing individual goblins. Note - I left 2 metal chests here, I'll be back for these later. Wild beasts posed little problem, although I met no wolves, only boars and scavengers. I wandered into a cave and tried to tame a shadowbeast, but the dumbass said "Too hard" and the scroll was wasted. How stupid! I went on and eventually got to Dominik's farm, talking with him and buying some picklocks from him.

That's the end of this chapter. I've still got to get into Montera, but running past the bandits shouldn't be hard. Then I'll spy on the mercenaries, help the rebels surrounding Montera, and possibly visit Okara and start getting the men for them. After that I should be powerful enough to liberate Cape Dun... if not, we'll see.

Danger level (0-10): 5. (Not that dangerous. Darmok almost got me but he wouldn't have killed me. Bandits didn't really get me to the "1 more hit and I die" point, even.)
Level: 9, I think I have some 28 (38?) points left now.
New stats: Now 105 Str, 125 Hunting, 11 Alchemy/Smithing, 12 Thievery. Also prayed near Cape Dun and now have 260 HP (280 with an amulet of life I got from somewhere) and 210 Endurance.
New skills: Stalking, Skin animals, Take teeth and claws.

^Careful in the free mine, i think you know that Gorn has "hallucinations" on this part of the game .

Yea, i know a little bit about it. But thank you very much anyway.
Also to Blubbler: Thank you :)

Diary

So I entered the Free Mine. I killed most of the guards with my crossbow. I had enough dex. to hit em’ from a greater range. After the first few guards I told Gorn to wait at the entrance. I quickly arrived at Tarrock and he told me about the Ulu-Mulu. So I ran out of the mine again to collect the required items and give some Crawler plates to Wolf. I killed the Fire Lizard with my crossbow, to avoid the greatest danger. The others were not so dangerous. So I went back again and let Tarrok build my Ulu-Mulu. As I cleared and left the mine again I talked to Xardas and I went to the Orctown. But I didn’t use the Ulu-Mulu, I killed them all one by one. :gratz After I’ve stolen the statue I entered the Sleepertempel. So, the most dangerous part began. The first “trap” with the two levers was one I’ve been afraid of. I didn’t know what the right order was, but I thought: from left to right, like the 3 symbols. But I don’t know if that matters. The other trap which I feared was also with two levers, where you got to choose one. I’ve seen one skeleton at one lever so that was the “bad” one. And I’ve chosen the right one. : ) And the trap where I had to use my crossbow, I knew out of X walkthroughs how THIS trap “works”. So I moved on again and collected most of the potions till now. After some time I picked up Uriziel and arrived at the invincible Orcshaman and ran back like the devil – damn Spell. :P I again did anything what Xardas told me and cleaned up the old camp from nearly everything. Stone upgraded my armour of course, and I’ve “stolen” the 2 Str. Pots. inside the Old camp (2 x +3). And again I talked to Xardas and went then Into the Sleepertempel for the last time. I walked through it again until I met Xardas again. And then I collected those damn much, in parts useless, Potions for everything (Mana, HP, Str, Dex). Then I headed for Kalom, and all the others there. I mostly stood behind that one pillar in the middle. Kalom stood on the other side and I ran to him. After some hits he died and then the army of novices walked onto me. I ran a little bit more back, so the Sleeper could not hit me with his Fireballs. After a long and hard fight with all those novices I moved on again. I went to the hearts and killed the Daemon lords in an adequate range to the sleeper. And then – the last heart.

Yeah, i made it !! :)
I've beaten Gothic I HC !!

Guild: Mercenary

All in all playing like this made much more fun. I think you feel more, that you are a real part of the world, and it's more "realistic". Before, every mistake you made were nothing, after you loaded the game - here it's not so. As i played Gothic for the 2nd or 3rd time i ran into the Orcterritory and tried to get so much exp at possible. Of course here i never thought about it (and of course at the end i killed most of the orcs:gratz) :)

I think in a few days I'll give G2 NotR a try.

I finished all the quests in the first chapter (sort of the Chromanin quest for obvious reason) and became a shadow. With Scar's sword I cleared the nest of the minecrawlers and then became a magician of fire and learned circle one to three immediately. For the black goblins I used Fire Ball and Scar's sword. Before entering the orc graveyard I learned the fourth circle of magic, bought Fire Storm and leveled up in the forests.
I then noticed that I may have calculated a bit too drastic on strength and ended up switching to Lares' Axe to equip more protective rings (and it was a wise choice). The Orc Warrior was no problem with Ice Block, but that guru was a bit of a pain, because he took so many shots. I had to use Ice Block on him. Back from the Orc Graveyard I gave Cor Angar my report and the herbs I collected before and he told me what Y'Berion told him after he gave me the quest to collect the herbs (What? §Ugly).
I've spoken with Saturas and now head towards the first focus.

Part IV: Montera and Okara

I ran through the bandits and arrived at Montera without problem. First, I did some of the no fighting quests, like spying after the mercenaries, then started fighting in the arena. It mostly went smoothly, although I had to fight Goose twice. Swapped the slaves afterwards, then with the accumulated LPs I learned the second swordfighting skill and how to use shields.

With this, I went to the grain farm and then beyond to deal with the grain thieves. Unfortunately there were too many, so I approached the camp from above and, hoping to get a few nearby snappers on them, cast the Summon Animals spell on one of them. Only about two came, but it was enough of a diversion, so I went down and lured out those which didn't fight.

Then I ran like hell... So, when the grain thieves lost me, they started to fight a pack of snappers and scavengers who were already at each other's throats. A pity I lost the screenshot, it was great. I killed one here, then dueled another to kill him too.

There were still three though, so I went up to the cliff overlooking their camp again, and having bought ten poisoned arrows back in Cape Dun, I used about three to wound one bandit and let the poison take its effect as I went down once again to combat the two that rushed at me. The shield helped immensely here to parry some thrusts, and focusing on the poisoned foe then disposing of the other, the fight ended. I got injured heavily though, all thanks to the second foe, who only had a club but was probably the strongest of the grain thieves (he didn't fall from a power strike, all the others did at this point). After this, I healed up, went into the camp, collected the grain sacks and killed the last thief. I wanted to explore the tunnel behind too, but there was only a metal chest there and a bunch of minecrawlers, and at this point I couldn't deal with either of these.

So I went back to collect rewards, then got 15 more strength points to upgrade to the worn skull shield. After this, I helped out two rebel groups nearby, first ambushing the slave camp guards for Daryl then removing Trano for Otis' gang. I also uncovered the rebel spy and discussed liberation of Montera with him, but this was impossible for now so I just went to the wheat farm again to accompany Rufus.

This was hell, of course, since we all know Rufus manages to run into 2 wolfpacks. I had trouble taking out even one from full health. Eventually, I tried with poison arrows to kill wounded ones (by running away and letting it perish while chasing me), but this way, only a few died. I eventually figured out that if I struck the one Rufus was fighting, one strike every few seconds, no wolves would attack me, and this plan worked for the most part. Regretfully, I had to abuse the bridge wolves can't cross at one point (the one before the first wolfpack).

After they were slain, I followed Rufus to Okara, sneaking up on the nasty shadowbeasts to open a chest. Reward: mana ring and a bone bow, replacing my hashishin bow. Here in Okara, I opened a chest in the empty alchemy lab, reported Rufus' arrival, sold some junk and then set off for some people. I got Fraser, Owen and Randall at this point, for I can't handle Kent's ripperbeasts, Candela's shadowbeasts and Rakus' undead yet.

On the way back from Fraser, I got a bit lost and ended up at Anog, from whom I bought a horned helmet and light rebel armor. Then I walked to Silden, it being nearby and collected the teleport stone. After this, I teleported back to Cape Dun. I learnt to pick difficult locks from Seruk, then robbed Esiel's chest.

I counted the armed forces of Cape Dun: unless I missed any, it's 10 orcs, including the leader, 8 orc mercenaries (Cyrus is dead, remember?) and 3 Hashishin, one of whom can poison. Next chapter, I'm gonna liberate Cape Dun, or at least try. I'll get rid of the two patrols and possibly try to kill Ortega and his crew to prepare for this.

Danger level (0-10): 7,5. (The game used a multitude of methods to try and kill me - there were several near death events.)
Level: I don't remember, probably around 15 now.
New stats: Now 167 Str, 127 Hunting, 17 Alchemy, 11 Smithing, 31 Thievery, 6 Ancient Knowledge (bought two stone tablets from Deckard, they'd be lost if I liberated Cape Dun without doing so).
New skills: Swordfighting level 2, Shields level 1, Pick Difficult Locks.

Man, I can't believe how stupid I am. I did everything fine and collected three focuses without prolbem. Lester's one was left and one the way there I had 99 strength and Scar's sword and the Blood Hound guarding the way there was at a sport hard to hit with projectile magic so I thought I'd just run there and kill it with meleeb as it'd only take two hits, but as I run there I can't get it in the focus because it's too high. I drank a speed potion before but it didn't help me on my retreat because I walked backwards which helps nothing against Blood Hounds isntead of just turning and running. It always ends like that. I think I could do sth in melee and get kileld by a barrage of strikes. :C:

Short episode. I didn't have time to play more so I just cleaned the two orc patrols (nearly dying to a single wolf in my super armor meanwhile. I hate wolves). The first one had three orcs, as you can remember we killed one in the first or second part. I hid behind a rock and shot a poison arrow at them - the one that was standing guard. We began to shoot at each other when somehow the aggressive boars Brenton wants to be gone rushed at us. They knocked me down at about 50 HP so I couldn't stand up (there were two standing guard over me), so I waited until the orcs killed the boards next to me, then ran away from the orc that was waiting for me to stand up and healed up.

Coming back, the boars and orcs were still fighting - it was no real challenge to defeat them while occupied.

I went to Reddock and bought 15 fire arrows (with this I had about 17 of those slash damaging arrows, however they're called, and 32 fire arrows). I started shooting fire arrows at the orcs on the farm from the cliff above, then as they hid from me I jumped on the roof of the building and continued. The problem was, one crossbow bolt of theirs knocked me down, so I had to run to find a better fighting position. Two orcs chased me while one was doing archery (one was too lazy to fight), so I took shelter as I fought Topork and a wounded scout 1v2.

Well, they weren't red yet so it wasn't too bad when they knocked me down and took my weapon. I stood up and shot the wounded scout quickly, as a consequence Topork came and knocked me down again, taking my Orcslayer and the rest of my gold. As I stood up the scout was still down, so I rushed there, drew my Hashishin knife and finished it off.

Now came the dangerous bit as now I had a red Topork with about 3/4 health chasing me, so I opted to find openings in his defense, stab him with a Hashishin knife, strike him with a power strike and then dance around him. Doing this twice, he fell from the poison. I ate some herbs quickly and found the archer; I shot him with one of those arrows... "dull arrows"? that knocked him down just like a power strike would (didn't know they can do that, actually - cool!), then rushed at him and finished him off with my freshly reclaimed longsword. Killing the lazy scout still sitting among the pigs and chicken was easy. That was two patrols gone, none to go!

And here I am, sitting victoriously in the farm building on Topork's throne.

Danger level (0<10): 8, the wolf and fighting Topork with two-digit HP was really dangerous.

No new stats or skills, maybe a level gained. Not sure.

Then good luck. :)

After i made Gothic I, i will begin with Gothic II NotR "Hardcore".

Introduction

Game: Gothic II NotR
Desired Class: Fire Mage
Desired Build: 30% to Two handed, 30 Strength I think, Magic

I choose Fire Mage cauz i think its the most save way. I can summon some Monsters which will fight for me and keep all those other bad Monsters away from me, and the rest I can deal out of an greater Range - out of the danger zone.
And the Dragons got nothing against an Skeleton army. :gratz

Ahhh what a nice day to begin my HC try. I levelled up, killed every monster I came across, got myself 500 odd ore, bought quite a bit of picklocks and diggers disciple, set myself by looting fisk, went to poor ole Gilbert, and just as I was going down, I fell to my death. So that is my HC try right there! :D

If I might offer a suggestion or two, I certainly wouldn't go for a stength build as a mage. Dex is just so much stronger because bows are much more useful in early game (because they always deal full damage, whereas fighting with melee weapons is very inefficient at the start of the game due to low crit chance) and the Rapier and the Master Sword are far superior to any other weapon in terms of damage compared to requirements (well, except Beliar's Claw of course, but that's not available as a mage) and on top of that, dex is also very useful for pickpocketing.

Also, skeletons aren't all that strong against dragons, you'll probably have to resort to scrolls to defeat the dragons.

I wish you good luck on your NotR attempt.

Part VI: Final

I decided to scrap Cape Dun & Ortega at the moment because they seemed too risky on a second thought - Cape Dun might have been doable but Ortega and his ~10 bandits would have been impossible. So I decided to go loot some level 2 chests and got some stuff.

I went to Trelis next, doing some quests there. I don't really feel like writing a long, detailed description of my actions, so here it is - I decided to escort Cole to Nemora, but on the way, the 3 snappers attacked. The last one got me down to low HP so I ran behind a big boulder to quickly drink a healing pot. Well, in typical Gothic 3 fashion, the pursuing snapper ran through the rock and slaughtered me.

Cause of death: Ethereal snapper.
Level: Hmm... something like 18? Maybe 19?

Yeah, i know that the skeletons die really quick, but if i summon enough they ever attack the dragon so that it ever "howls" and dont move.
As i played Gothic NotR for the first time i used that "tactic".
But how u suggested - if i get real problems i can summon 1-2 daemons or something else. (if daemons are possibible, cauz fire damage?)

I wish you good luck on your NotR attempt

While skeletons can work, you'll usually need a lot of them and you need to get lucky with them (because if the dragon feels like flying your skeletons won't deal damage quickly enough to overcome the regeneration.
It's better to just summon a demon (summoning two would be a very bad idea as they would start fighting each other). Demons deal regular damage and a demon is enough to singlehandedly defeat any of the dragons in the Valley of Mines.
Other useful spells include Rain of Fire and Dragonsnapper transformation (yeah, Dragonsnappers are actually stronger than most Dragons).

Well, I was level 10 there actually. I wrote down my attributes etc. but forgot to write down the level so I calculated which level I should be by adding up the lp, but I forgot that I also had 1h on 5% and was thus level 10.

Once again I'm back to playing a bit of G1. This time, I'm trying to play without using any physical force (so I can only fight with magic). The only two exceptions are the Stone Golem and the targets in the Orc Tempel.
I've done this before and I manged to get all the way into the fifth chapter, where the orc shaman that's guarding Uriziel killed me, so I definitely know this is doable.

Man, snappers are so annoying this time. I remember them being no problem last time, but on the way to Milten I was almost killed twice - by the same snapper...
Now Lester's focus is left again and I will simply avoid the Blood Hounds by tranformation magic this time. I'm a little bit worried about the harpies...

Character name : HC Philip
Game : Gothic 2
Mod : None
Build : Dexterity Based Paladin (Not a paladin yet)
Level: 2

Philip was once a negotiator for the ore trade between the VoM and Khorinis and ultimately the main land. He was arrested and thrown into the barrier for corruption and theft of ore. Once the barrier mysteriously blew up the shock wave blew him back and his cave collapsed on him, it took him 4 days and 4 nights to get his way out of the rubble. He was absolutely awed by the sight he saw then, dragons where attacking what was left of the old camp, he knew at once what must be done.

Even better, you could lure a bow-wielding NPC into the temple (or find one, or knock down a templar and give him a bow), make him stand in front of you with your back facing the spiky room, then jump up and down so that one of the templar's arrows finally hits that thing. Voila!

*I can't assume responsibility for hedgehogs created as a byproduct of this experiment.

Okay, my game is progressing nicely. Firestorm is just such an overpowered spell (high range, high single target damage, good aoe damage and the possibility of immobilising your opponents, this combination is just insane) that you really don't need melee weapons once you have that.

Dude, doing the missions to get in the militia already makes you atleast 3 already. Finding the thieves, 3 shitloads of experience from the thieves and ofcourse succeeding the mission itself. If you wanna be a citizen first you'll be 4-5 atleast. I don't see how it's possible.

i hadn't even encountered a dragon yet at the time, it was alot of "pitfall" style hit and run dashing through the VoM to contact the ore places. (Had a very near death incident while looking for diego).

But if you gulp down a speed potion and prepare yourself for the job its relatively easy to have a level 14 paladin.

sorry for the edit: omidoow, I'm not here to lie, if I wanted to lie I would certainly have went right ahead and told everyone I had a level 25 paladin named HC- N00bP0wnz but I'm not here to lie, theres no point in it.
I honestly had a level 14 paladin, in fact when I completed the story without an HC character I had a level 14 paladin a some point in the story, its really easy, heres my 'trick' to doing it, you can litterally go from militia to paladin without killing a beast.
1. Load up on speed potions
2. Learn Acrobatics
3. Get the heavy militia armor first
4. Never attack an orc on your first trip to VoM
5. Get to the 3 places as fast as possible
6. When you don't find diego, shout "all hope is lost" and then cry
7. Go to Diego
8. Talk to Garand
9. Leave through that little abandoned mine right by where the barrier used to end
10. Enjoy your stance as a paladin.

You character screen says you are a paladin, even though Hagen calls you a knight, and you can also start to learn paladin magic, and the paladins that previously told you that they only train paladins will train you now.
And if you wouldn't become a paladin after freeing Bennet, you certainly wouldn't become one later in the game. Just because you find a paladin armour in some dungeon doesn't mean that you suddenly become a paladin.
By your logic, if you let Wolf make you a Minecrawler Armour, do you become a Minecrawler?

Nope because you are human, you can't possibly become a Minecrawler. As a human you CAN become a Paladin and still be a human. Anyway most of the people with Knight's armor are called Knight so i figured you where a Knight with that armor. Just a little mistake so stop fucking tripping.

Since I beat g1 and g2 notr with HoP mod, I am thinking of attempting g2 classic. Never played it hardcore before, should be fun. But not now... maybe when we start school.

@the lvl 14 paladin guy: dude, at level 14 it isn't a brilliant idea to be a paladin... IMO that's too low. Maybe lvl 18... but 14? Or if you're playing g2 classic, which I haven't in years, it might be ok. But still sounds low.

And for everybody's FYI, when playing G2 Classic, I used to speed up to Paladin guild and reach it at level 9. In that playthrough, after killin' all the orcs in Khorinis, and some in VoM, only then, I'd reach about level 13. So yeah, most possible and absolutely enjoyable.

Diary

In the last days I made it so far, that I became a novice.
Beginning with my way to Khorinis. I did all the quests on my way into the town. I also collected the 500 exp. from Lares. I did most of the quests there and became Constantino’s apprentice. I know that Bosper would be better but I did it so cause it “matches” better with mages. I had skilled Dex. to 30 so I can wield a ordinary Bow. I talked to Greg at the tavern and cleared the mine with my “new” bow. I took the Statue for Daron and moved on to the mercenary’s, and did so many quests as possible. After that I went to the monastery to became a novice.

I've started another game of Gothic 1. Since I've previously managed to play through G1 in 4:29 hours, I now hope to do it in 4 hours.
However, my start has been sort of rocky since it's been quite some time since I last played G1 against the clock, so I don't really expect to stay within my time limit. But if I finish the game and manage to beat my previous time, that's quite an accomplishment as well I think.

Game: Gothic I
Name: Nameless Hero Who Wants to Finish the Game in Under Four Hours
Challenge: finish the game in less than 4 hours
Guild: Shadow
Level: 7
Stats (without items): 68 strength, 10 mana, one hand level 1, 10 unspent LPs
Progress: at the start of chapter 2, but I have the Almanach already
Time Played: 1:07h

Update:
Game: Gothic I
Name: Nameless Hero Who Wants to Finish the Game in Under Four Hours
Challenge: finish the game in less than 4 hours
Guild: Magician of Water
Level: 16
Stats (without items): 85 strength, 37 mana, one hand level 1, 4th circle of magic, 10 unspent LPs
Progress: chapter 4, need to go to the Free Mine next
Time Played: 2:44h

I'm making good progress so far and I only had one near death experience. I'm quickly approaching the 4h time limit, but I might still make it since chapter 5+6 are relatively short.

Things are looking good for That Guy with the Sword. Currently on chapter 3, I became a paladin but I did not get the eye first. I think I will need the knight armor much more than the broken eye. Also, I beated up Cornelius and didn't have to pay him 2 000 gold. I had 2100 gold, which I spent on 2h magic ore sword.

Current stats(without items):

Level: 12
Str: 60
Dex: 15
Mana: 21
HP: 187
2h: 60%
1h: 32%

By the looks of it, I am not likely to die in a fight. Though I'm afraid a dragon might finish me, or a foe no one can defeat - gravity. In gothic 2 falls are much much dangerous.
Btw, this has to be my hardest challange yet - I had so many close calls... almost killed by wolves, scavengers, bloodflies, goblins, orcs, shadowbeast, Jorgen, that guy with whom you hunt stuff near khorinis and a lot more things. Holy shit. :D

Okay, so I was in the sixth chapter after 3:34h, giving me 26 minutes to kill the three remaining shamans and banish the Sleeper, which would have been plenty of time.
What I didn't know is that the second Orc Teleport Scroll in the Orc Town only spawns after you tell Xardas that you've charged up Uriziel. So I went to the Orc Town without having done that and didn't find the Scroll. At first I was a bit confused and thought that maybe the scroll would be in another room or in one of the chests, so I wasted a bit of time.
Then I realised that I would have to get the Statue, so I lost even more time killing the orcs nearby, before realising that I didn't even have a Telekinesis scroll with me, so I had to go back to Sect Camp to buy one. By the time I re-entered the Temple, I had lost so much time that I had to go for the fastest route, regardless of the danger involved.
So I ran straight to Varrag Kasorg, cleared out the skeletons that were locked with me in the room and then turned the switch thrice, not taking time to clear out the two demons that spawned or summoning skeletons to help me deal with the shaman. My hope was to get in an Ice Block before I got disabled, but that didn't work out, so I slowly got killed.

DIARY:

D E A D

That Guy with the Sword died... he thought "No Guts, No Glory", and pushed his luck against a troll and 2 fire lizards(not at the same time, one by one). And luck was on his side. But then, he met his ultimate challange yet. And he thought he has a chance... But little did he know, gravity and huge punches are a bad combination. "Stranger get hit by giant fist, then stranger fall of mountain. Then stranger die!". That Guy with the Sword wanted to take out the black troll once and for all. There it is, The face of his killer! (http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll53/Void_KD/G2classicHC-FaceofaKiller.jpg) Look in his evil eyes... how could he have taken away such a noble paladin? Has he no shame...no honor?
Well anyway, the bastard caught me off guard. And he slammed me in a rock. His first punch drained 1/3 of my life, gravity another 1/3 and then he finnished me off just as I was about to get off his range.. I needed no more than half a second. But he beat me this time. §cry

Stats:

Lvl: 15
Unspent LP: 10
Str: 81(no items), 86 (with items, obviously)
Dex: 15(no items, 30 (with an amulet near xardas' tower)
Mana: 23

Damn, I am not going to do a second attemp any time soon. The frequent crashes just drive me insane - 90% of the time when I load my game, continuing where I left off last time, the game crashes! And from time to time it just goes out for no reason at all. Like, why didn't it crash when I was about to die  that did happen in one of my failure g1 hc attemps... The game crashes in the most important moment, when I haven't saved for ages, and never crashes when I need it. Damn irony

I took out the thieves guild. It was quite lucky too - those master sword bastards could kill me in 4 hits. And I'm a paladin!
Currently on chapter 3, with knigth's armor, and I still didn't get the Eye. I think I'm gonna take it really slowly here, I want to hunt things down for the xp. But this time, the black troll is not to be approached.
I'm with the blesssed 1h ore blade(70 dmg) and have ~4k gold.
