Air Mage

I am NOT asking for the solution to the first trap. I know the combination.
I am asking if anyone understands WHY the sequence is what it is. Why push those buttons, in that order?
The yellow tablet of the scholar gives no clue. There is nothing in the Library of the Scholars that gives a clue. I have considered if the sequence might be related to: the three languages of the builders, the three gods, the leaders of the builders, the tablets, the five lecterns in the library, the first words of the tablets or lecterns, the alphabetical listing of color of the tablets or of the leaders' names, both in english and german... I have tried to think of ANYTHING that would explain the sequence, and I can't think of a thing.
I play games on hardcore, and I HATE the idea that the only way past this puzzle is to simply reload over and over until you figure it out. That's cheating IMO, and I don't like it. If you sent 100 people to try different combinations, 99 would die.
I tried running all over Jharkendar trying to find more hints. None of the water mages help, Quarhodron doesn't come back, you can't call Khardimon the priest, and I don't know of a tomb for the scholar. Crimson the gold smelter gives some summoning phrase which doesn't seem to have a purpose.
I tried wearing the various jewelry sets, I wore the will-o-wisp amulet, I tried wearing damage resistance and health jewelry. I tried shooting the buttons with bows and xbows, as well as the statue and other parts of the room.
Do the tablets in the German version give better hints? Is this a translation error, or something the devs forgot to add?
As I said, I know the combination and can just go through, but it really rankles that I can find nothing that explains the sequence. I am also rather peeved at the second trap, but at least I believe I have figured out how the devs think we are supposed to solve that one, with the will-o-wisp.
And of course all this ignores how Raven could waltz through them, but that's a different complaint.
