I am NOT asking for the solution to the first trap. I know the combination.

I am asking if anyone understands WHY the sequence is what it is. Why push those buttons, in that order?

The yellow tablet of the scholar gives no clue. There is nothing in the Library of the Scholars that gives a clue. I have considered if the sequence might be related to: the three languages of the builders, the three gods, the leaders of the builders, the tablets, the five lecterns in the library, the first words of the tablets or lecterns, the alphabetical listing of color of the tablets or of the leaders' names, both in english and german... I have tried to think of ANYTHING that would explain the sequence, and I can't think of a thing.

I play games on hardcore, and I HATE the idea that the only way past this puzzle is to simply reload over and over until you figure it out. That's cheating IMO, and I don't like it. If you sent 100 people to try different combinations, 99 would die.

I tried running all over Jharkendar trying to find more hints. None of the water mages help, Quarhodron doesn't come back, you can't call Khardimon the priest, and I don't know of a tomb for the scholar. Crimson the gold smelter gives some summoning phrase which doesn't seem to have a purpose.

I tried wearing the various jewelry sets, I wore the will-o-wisp amulet, I tried wearing damage resistance and health jewelry. I tried shooting the buttons with bows and xbows, as well as the statue and other parts of the room.

Do the tablets in the German version give better hints? Is this a translation error, or something the devs forgot to add?

As I said, I know the combination and can just go through, but it really rankles that I can find nothing that explains the sequence. I am also rather peeved at the second trap, but at least I believe I have figured out how the devs think we are supposed to solve that one, with the will-o-wisp.

And of course all this ignores how Raven could waltz through them, but that's a different complaint.

The hints on the stone tablets are really hidden very good ...(also in the German version of the game)
On the first relic you can read something like "We, the last three of the council of the five, have provided the temple with traps, so that the sword will never see the daylight again."
(translation by me, I don't have Notr in English^^)

The marked words are a hint how to pass the trap:
First you press the button with the three persons on it, then the button with the spikes and then the one with the sun.

Look at the red stone tablet, it contains the vital clue.

Not sure how it reads in the English version, but here's an attempt at translation:
We, the last three leaders of the Council of Five, have endued the chambers of the temple with traps and hidden the entrance, so that the Sword shall never again see the light of the day.

Thus, you have to first press the button with three people, then the button that shows a spike trap and lastly the button that shows the sun.

However, I do admit that you can't expect anyone to get this right on their first try.

For the second trap, you have to look at the yellow stone tablet, more precisely at the face that's depicted on it.

Edit: >.< too slow

THANK YOU!!!

That problem has been bothering me for AGES! While I do not agree with the clues, at least now I understand.

And as for the second trap, the face on the tablet does not help. The tablet has square eyes, while the correct arch has triangular eyes.

Also, the tablet says to follow the light to the end. The third path has a torch that is further from the arch than the others, so maybe it's that one. The fourth path has a torch at the end of the tunnel, so maybe it's that one. The fifth path has a torch that is NOT near any kind of end, suggesting that it is not that one. However, if you use the will-o-wisp in the middle of the room, it will head for the correct path.

Again, I don't think the tablets help at all. I had to guess with that one as well, dying many times. It was only after I found the correct path did I understand that the "light" referred to the will-o-wisp.

It should be the yellow one, which looks like this: click (http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/4303/gelbesteintafelds4.jpg)
And here (http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/7931/gang5xz1.jpg) the arch.

It was only after I found the correct path did I understand that the "light" referred to the will-o-wisp. The light refers to the next room, where spikes are beneath the floor plates. There you have to use a light spell, a torch or something else, so that you can see that some floor plates have a different colour than the plates which let you fall on the spikes.

Ah, my mistake.

I counted the five buttons as the first trap, the arches as the second trap, and the levers as the third trap.

The floor plates were obvious and I didn't really count that as a trap. Who's going to run around a deadly temple in the dark?
