Just bought Gothic 1 from Amazon. At first I struggled with the keybd and mouse controls, but in one of the walkthroughs I found a much better system that was not mentioned in the Gothic manual that came with the game. The walkthrough showed me that LCtrl was actually on mouse1, and Alt was on mouse2. That freed up my left hand for the alternate setup using the WASD keys. Much better for me. Are there any more unknowns like this in the game ?
Also, I don't seem to be able to kill a meatbug easily in the game. Sometimes I can hit the critter right away. Other times I can swing my sword all I want and the darn thing crawls right between my legs and escapes. I need 3 more meat bugs to finish the cooks quest, but they are invincible.

I don't think so.

Yeah, that's sometimes kinda tricky, ... looking down to the ground sometimes helps, ... honestly, ... i like to shoot them with a bow, easy dish then. ;)

There's one more thing. When trading you can use combinations of keys which.. I can't remember.
But it's for selling 1, 10, 100 items in one shoot.

This girl's walkthrough tells me in the New Camp to climb a very high cliff. I'm thinking I've got it wrong, but sure enough if I beat on W fast enough, I went all the way up in small steps. I think I climbed clear out of the camp because I reached a bunch of birds instead of Horatio. I had to climb half way down to get to the top of the dam like she wanted me to. This has got to be a real advantage once I get a bow. Right now I'm totally poor as a rat. This walkthrough was written by Airyn, and is a good one ... very detailed ... and keeps me making progress rather than messing up a lot of quests as I would do otherwise. Anyway, mouse1 on and mouse1 off made climbing easy.

actualy there's a trick for killing the little beast , you have to go behind it while its walking forward and be close as much as you can to it then give it a punch BUT if the meatbug is turning around you wont be able to hit it , it works when its walking forward .

I didn't get much of your post :dnuhr: but: mouse2+up will make you climb if mouse 2 is the jump button.

Its L-ALT and L-CTRL and L-SHIFT , it trades/takes 10 , 50 or 100 of some stuff

Yep. Mistake. Make that mouse 2 for jumping and climbing. I'm still having to think carefully for each move. It'll get natural eventually.
I dunno about you but i've played with my own configurations from my first 2 min in gothic i cant play with the crappy stuff thats in default. Mine is the coolest :D
draw - ctr
jump - space
action - e
movement - w,a,s,d
Its very easy this way and you youse the mouse to

It's easiest to use a pick axe for killing meat bugs. If you don't have one, just use your fists (by pressing ^). It's important not to stand too close to the meat bug, otherwise you won't hit it.

Wrong game. Meat bugs in G1 are immune to ranged weapons.
And in G2 using a ranged weapon isn't necessary as it's pretty easy to hit them with normal weapons (though you might need two hits because of the weird damage calculation system^^).

Good grief. Well, at least I'm not alone in my incompetence. I do have a pick. Will give it a try.

You're right. Wrong information on Mondgesänge :(
Meatbugs have 100 protection from fire, not from arrows.

In my experience, for some reason I have trouble hitting them with an Old Sword (dmg 12), but I have little trouble with a Rusty Sword (dmg 10). If none of the other suggestions work, try using a Rusty Sword.
