I'm only in chapter 2 so I don't start running into Seekers all over the place. Right now, I'm building LP and weapons hopefully to level 16 before I tackle the Valley of Mines. I've been wandering all over building LP, and I have Strength 61 and Dexterity 65 .. bought most of that from Cassia. I also have the Master Sword which I got by beating the tar out of the other thief. I only have light Militia armor, Elm bow, and light Xbow ... pretty sad against an Orc .. but improving slowly. I will buy Medium Militia armor at the Castle. I had to go steal a pile of gold to get 2500 gold coins, but I have that now. To make any real headway in the Valley of Mines, I desparately need a better Xbow. I notice that I can steal a key from one of the Paladin trainers. What does that key do? Iwould gladly steal it to raid a weapons store and get the Xbow. For all I know I might be on the edge of competence with the Medium armor, and the Master Sword. My sword skills are beyond my level since I learned them the first time through G2 as a Merc. I have the side step fast strikes very well practiced now, and, with luck, I can beat an Elite Orc ... the one near the Tavern. I've been practicing on him to see when I should leave for the Valley of Mines. I've noticed the walkthroughs are not very well informed on all the G2 secrets. None of them knew that Cassia gave high Dexterity in Chapter 1. Pretty sure there's an Xbow laying out there somewhere.
I'm not sure if you mean Peck with that paladin trainer. At least peck's key can be used to open one of the towers at Khorinis. If that key you mentioned is some other key you may try it also on towers. Hope that works :)

Also, you dont have to kill any orcs to be in the valley of mines the first time.
I completely ignored them (When speaking of G2NOTR). It's so time consuming and few are by themselves. More funny to take them all out when you return to slay the dragon.
When picking up Diego's bag of gold, all you need is a speed potion. Run, pick it up run a bit away from the orcs and then teleport, for example or just run back and out of the mines.
Why do you need a crossbow? You only have to increase your strength and onehand skill, then you shouldn't have any problems in the valley of mines. Spending your LP on too much skills at once will only make your hero weaker.
However, there are two good crossbows you can get: you can find one at the bridge on the way to the pyramides in the northeast (40 dex, 55 damage) and you can knock down Udar in the castle in the VoM, he's got a heavy crossbow. (70 dex, 85 damage)

I'll try for the bridge. I don't want to start ch 3 and trigger the Seekers yet. They take up a lot of time and health until I'm much stronger. I found that the Xbow is a great exploit for killing the Dragons. All I have to do is lure a dragon close to me at a pillar which blocks his flames, but does not block the Xbow. I see Udar is Strength 80. I don't know yet if I can take him on at all. Worth a try and I'm already 65 dex.

I finally ended Chapter 2 at level 17. Amazing, but it certainly made taking on the Orcs a lot easier. Now, I'm in Chapter 4, and again I have the problem of getting a decent 1-hander. I bought the Magic Ore weapon, but it is weaker than my Master Sword until I get it blessed ( $5000 ). Wish there was a cheaper way, but I have discovered in my first game that the Dragons are easier to kill with a good Xbow .. so I got one with hit 80. I already have the 2-handed Dragon Slayer at hit 80, but I'm much better with the 1h sword. Seems to me that the entire Paladin game is about overcoming the inherent weakness of the Paladin. Even the walkthroughs that I've read say to run past the Orcs and Seekers. Not me. I prefer the way of the Warrior .. and the gentleman. I discovered that the wife of the farmer near Khorinis was sick. I went to Vatras for her medicine and helped her get better. Indeed, the top quest in the entire game.Ran the Orcs off her farm, and her husband was well too. Think I'll go pickpocket all the Mercs at Onars farm.

Huh? Weakness?? The Paladins are extremely powerful and possess extremely powerful runes...in fact, one is total overkill and unbalances the game. It's insert code isn't named "master of disaster" for no reason. If you are playing as a Paladins you need to take advantage of all their abilities, including magic. You can get the Holy Arrow rune fairly early, and can beat the game with it and not need anything else.

That is my problem, I'm sure. I don't like magic, and much prefer the swords and bows. It means I've had to learn a bunch of exploits to get around the huge effort to reach a decent level. There's no way I could have gone to the Old World at less than level 16. I did try, just to see what happens, and I fired over 100 arrows at an Elite Orc with my Hunting Bow, and barely did
any damage at all. I could not win against a Warg until I was nearly level 16. Now, I'm about level 22, and it is not so bad at all. I still go back to Khorinis to fight the Orc Commanders near the town and pick up gold and hit points.

If you prefer melee then you should play as a dragon hunter. I prefer playing as mage, and paladin is a mix of the two.
Dragon hunter fights toe to toe and has some strong ranged weapons. They are beer swilling brawlers spoiling for a fight.
Paladin can mix toe to toe with fairly decent ranged weapons. His available weapons are not quite as good, but he has some decent magic(ranged weapon). A jack-of-all-trades so to speak....great at none, except for the rune I mentioned earlier. And I can't possibly stress it enough, Holy Missile ruins the game. It is an ungodly strong rune.
Mage has some jaw dropping magic that is unbeatable at range. Not so great in fighting toe to toe though. But ice block and a few hits with a weak sword can take out almost anything:D There are also two different lightning bolt scroll you can use to make a lightning bolt rune. One is DOUBLE the power of the other. I think it is 75dmg vs 150dmg and uses the same amount of mana. A lightning bolt rune made from the more powerful scroll is probably the best mage rune. Not as much power as Holy Missile, but still can take out N E THING with 2-3 shots. Some might argue there are more powerful mage runes, but you can't get them very early and mana cost per shot is much higher. For instance, Rain of Fire and Wave of Death<---- <3

I became a paladin, and it was smooth sailing from about lv.20. I haven't used a crossbow in the entire game. I used one handed weapon and holy arrow, and I have 100% 1 handed skill and 176 strength...I can kill and entire horde of about 15 orcs along with a few dragon snappers and shamens. This game was easier than the first one. I am downloading NotR now...
