I was just curious, which paths do you prefeer in G2 (once you try all three, of course) and why?

I most prefer militia/ paladin cause it is easier on begining in Khorinis- you can fast equip- lots of it learn and later even when become paladin you recieve much powerfull holy arrow which is more powerfull against creatures of B. than standard mage fireball:p

Mostly...

Militia -> Paladin The coolest role, but the most boring story arc.

Mages get a rich early-game but the end game is a bit less detailed.

Mercs got an unique start. And the later game feels more detailed as well.

As if the Mercs are supposed to be the "class" and the other options are there just for a choice.

Magician - the 'loonies' hanging at the swamp made me do it.

Playing with magic is almost always my preference when the option is there though - there's something pretty cool about conjuring up a ball of fire in ones hands or, summoning a small army to your side. I can play with a compound bow down at the range and I can run around with a sword in my yard but there's no way in hell that I'm ever going to be pulling a fireball out of...any part of my body.

Spontaneous internal combustion is exempt.

That just came to mind - I've played through both Gothic and Gothic II (+NoTR) using each path at least once and I honestly have no idea why I prefer using magic. What is really great about these games though is the fact that the story is actually varied, dependent on which path you play. I don't think that I own any other games that have the replay value of the Gothic series.

surely militia - paladin is the easiest way to play G2, and in the first game it s the world itself that induces the player to choose this path. Maybe because in the first part of the Cap 1 u have to spent ur 6-7 days in the city of Khorinis..
Mercenary - Dragonhunter is the path i prefer, first cuz of Lee and his story, second cuz of the nasty style of life of mercenaries, free and rude, extremely warriors, with honour and cleverness anyway.. except Silvio & C. :D
it s more difficult to follow this path at the beginnin of the game..only to speak with Lee u got to do more than simply walk from Xardas Tower to the city of Khorinis..
the Magician path is for expert players, that knows very well the G2 world and what it reserves.. i ve tryed this one but i get not so much gratification playin in this way..certanly the magic of runes and spells r very usefull in some cases, against particular enemies, but being a pure mage is limited..especially in the last part of G2.

In vanilla G2, that's not really true. The first time I played G2 I played as a magician and didn't have any trouble. It's not tougher than playing as a paladin or merc, and actually in vanilla G2 I found playing as a merc to be the most challenging.

And I guess that's why I like playing as a merc best, although all guilds have their definite advantages. And disadvantages. And therefore I like them all.

I played all the paths but I liked the most the mage path, because I like a lot to see these monsters killed by a fire storm or a large firestorm :))

Merc --> Dragon Hunter
reasons:
1st: The coolest armor and wep :D
2nd: I love this "heavy" atmosphere at Onar's farm between the other mercs
3rd: Dragon hunters are feared by all people in Khorinis and VoM and I love beeing feared :p

I have finished G2 so many times that I lost count BUT I have never finished G2 as mage O_O!!!!
Of course that doesn't mean I haven't played as one :p

With me ... all paths.;)

Of course, it's not that hard to play as magitian if you equip him with Master Sword or Dragon Slicer, train his swording skills up and over 100%, and make him for a not-such-a-mage, or for a battle mage as some like to call such a hybrid;). But if you're playing as pure or hard core magician, well then you need some 'expertise' to survive in 'harsh brutal gothic world'.

But I don't remember much how G2 'looks like'; didn't played it since the arrival of the expansion (NotR). In NotR being a pure magician is certainly not a cake walk; needs a bit of planning if you tend to make a powerful (regarding magic) mage.

I agree. In G2 the mage is cool: at the beginning you have quite funny quests as a novice, later (chapter 4) in the VOM 2 lightnings are enough to kill an orc warrior from a nice, safe distance... In NOTR opponents are more tough, so mages become the weakest choice.

Well, not in vanilla G2 so much, once you get the hang of it. G2, like G1, is too easy.

So true. They really did it good there: so easy to mess up a magician and make him a no-good waste of learning points unless you really plan ahead and carefully choose how to spend your LP's and what runes to use. But when you do succeed in creating a good magician, he is powerful and very dangerous.

as a magician u just have to spend enough LP to be able to use a master sword and a decent crossbow in case of emergency and plan about learning and using fire rain as a rune. in the last chapter it's a walk in the park with firerain

Looks awesome.

For me the most important reason that makes me decide for one side or the other is the atmosphere. This is why I played as a merc for at least five times in a row when I first played the game. Then I tried being a mage and the feeling was really great. It was not the magic part itself I enjoyed so much but all those dialogues, the soundtrack.... That is why I decided to become a mage countless times afterwards.
As for the paladin way I liked it but for some strange reason I never reached the final chapter.Maybe next time...

Dito to basescu.
Atmosphere is very important for me. And in the monastery...it's an elusive one. And the labours as a novice are so cool. Later on you get a lot of respect and you get really strong. Killing enemies from a distance with 100% accuaracy is a good thing,

The other way I loved to play was a special one...The archer's/marksman's way. I played teh entire game as an archer and I felt really satisfied at the end. I was a part of the merc/DH group then.

Mercinery/Dragon Hunter for shoure. You are payed for every job you do and also managing everything by yourself. You can't get armour for free like at the other two guilds. You forge your own weapons and not buy magic swords like paladin. Also I don't like magic so I prefer hand to hand combat and I like using xbow. Also you meet your old friens from the colony. I like uests when someone hire me to kill somebody or something like that. I played 12 times as a mercinery and I still like it a lot more then paladins or mages.

Söldner/Drachenjäger all the way!
It's the only way to get the Uriziel-lookalike after all.
I also love the heavy söldner armour and the light DJG armour.

Besides; what's better then hanging out with your old friends?(Lee, Gorn, Wolf, Cipher, Torlof, Cord, Lares, Buster, Jarvis...)
Hanging out with with your old friends and kicking arse ofcourse!

Next in line comes with Firemages.

Definitely Magician. I played Mage when I played G2 vanilla for the first time and it was just an amazing experience. Getting those 1k gold and the sheep is a great challenge and once you get into the monastery, the atmosphere is just fantastic. The game really manages to make you feel bold and daring for insisting on taking the test of fire.
And once you are a magician it's very rewarding because suddenly people will treat you with the utmost respect and you are finally able to kill stronger monsters.

But chapters 3 till 6 are somwhat anticlimatic because the game gets too easy at that point.

I can never force myself to go the militia/paladin path... it just doesn't appeal to me at all. But will have to try it some time.

Magician for sure, it's just the most challenging I think. I don't like how you play one but the quests and how people treat you are amazing : O

Ive only played as a Paladin and started a Merc campaign some months ago, but I dont have more time to play as I would.

Ive liked the Paladin experience cuz you become a kind of crusader against Beliar infidels hahahaah, but I want to finish my merc campaign.

Dragon hunters are awesome. Paladins are over rated. Mages are full of themselves. (though I do like the respect they get :p)

Hunter in leather armor FTW :D
