I have a few questions about modyfing the textures in Gothic 1.

1. I have downloaded GothicVDFS and unpacked "textures.vds". I have explored the directory, and have found a folder with many files, however, unable to open them. They are ".tex" files, and Photoshop can't open them. How can I open them?

2. Once I finish editing the textures, do I have to repack the directory? (to make it textures.vds again) - If so, how?

Try to use this program (http://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/index.php?go=downloads&release_id=30) to convert tex=>tga then .tga=>.tex
This tool also give you a preview for texture files and can extract any file from .vdf's

GoMan is used to convert textures one-by one. There is another tool, forgot it's name. Something with ZXXX. http://wiki.worldofgothic.com/ <--from there I have learn modding;-)

@playa,oldflash: Thx :D. GoMan works perfectly ;)
And to the second question?

Let's say, after I modified a tex file (in photoshop, and from TGA back to TEX), do I have to make the directory back in vdf format? If so, how?

here is how I make:
I load goman export the texture as tga, edit it,convert it and then replace the original texture with the edited onw(make a backup!). That's all;)!

You don't get it :(

Let me give you an example,k?
So. I copy textures.vdf from the Data directory. I unpack it with GothicVDFS, and I obtain the following directory:

_WORK

+ DATA

--+TEXTURES

---_COMPILED
---DESKTOP

I open _COMPILED, take a TEX from there, convert it with GoMan,and edit it with Photoshop. I re-convert it, I put it in the folder. Now, how can I make the _WORK directory a vdf file again?

EDIT

Ok,scrap that..how do I overwrite a .TEX file with GoMan?

EDIT2

Ok, damn, I think I'm being hard to understand.

So, I have edited an armor tex file (light shadow armor (convert to tga, edit, then back to tex)). And I want the game to use that file, that version of the armor, not the default one. How can I do that?

Nevermind. Found it out myself :p.

Iirc Gothic can start with raw files unpacked(i think you have a setting in Gothic Starter)

Here (http://wiki.worldofgothic.com/Tutorials/Modify+Armor+skins)'s a simple tutorial for modifying armor textures.

Yep,I've managed to edit the armors and use them ingame, but: How do I convert raw files to vdf again? Like oldflash's reskin mod or Freddies Texture Patch.

That can be done with vdfs tool. Select the tab called build mod and then click add and add the texture.
