What is Hamburg?

Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany. Its official name “Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg” (Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg) refers that Hamburg belonged to the medieval Hanseatic League of cities and is a City State.
Hamburg is about 750 km² big and has more than 1,8 million inhabitants. The city is very popular for tourists, because it has a lot of interesting buildings and places. The most famous tourist attraction of Hamburg is the Hamburg harbour, which also is the most important place for industry in the city.
Hamburg is also the most important junction on the route to Northern Europe and his airport is the oldest still working airport in Germany. Hamburg has got many ferry lines along the river Elbe.. In Hamburg are many channels, which are crossed over be 2300 bridges, which is more than what Amsterdam and Venice have together.


The Hamburg harbour

The Hamburg Harbour, or the port of Hamburg, is a deep water port off the North Sea, on the river Elbe in Hamburg. The Harbour is also named Germany`s “Gateway to the World” and it’s the largest sea-port in Germany and the second largest harbour in Europe. In 2004 there where more than seven million containers handled in Hamburg.

The history of the Harbour

The history of the Hamburg Harbour is as old as Hamburg itself. Founded in 1189 for its strategic location, the harbour has been Central Europe`s main port for centuries. During the second half of the 19th century, Hamburg became Central Europe`s main harbour for transatlantic passengers and from 1871 onward it was Germanys principial port of trade.

Shipyard Blohm + Voss

It was foundet in 1877, by Hermann Blohm and Ernst Voss as a general partnership. A shipyard was built on the island of Kuhwerder, near the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. In the second World War Blohm and Voss built ships for the German Army. In 1939 Bloh and Voss build the famous Warship “Bismarck”.
Today Blohm + Voss is a part of the ThyssenKrupp Marine System AG. The shipyard has about 1000 workers and about 20 ships leave the shipyard per year.

Town Hall:

The Hamburg Town Hall is one of the famous buildings in Hamburg. The Town Hall was built between 1886-1897. The Town Hall is also the home of the City Council and the senate.

Jungfernstieg

The history of the name of this place comes from the fact that since very long time it has been a place for shopping and walking and on Sundays many families in the old days came for walking and shopping and brought withthem their unmarried daugthers called “Jungfern”. Today the Jungfernstieg is the main station for the “Alsterdampfer”, a sightseeing ship.


Old Elbe Tunnel

The Old Elbe Tunnel opened 1911. The tunnel is 426m long and was a technical sensation because the tunnel is about 24m under heath the river Elbe. The Old Elb Tunnel was built to connect central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. This meant a big improvement for tens of thousends of workers in one of the busiest harbours in the world. Four huge lifts on either side of the tunnel carried pedestrians, carriages and motor vehicles to the bottom. They are still in operation.

Warehouse Complex:

The century-old “Speicherstadt” is located in the Free Port and is the world's oldest warehouse complex. It was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century from red brick, typical of northern Germany, with gabled roofs and small towers. Today there is Germanys biggest modell-train show and the Hamburg dungeon in the houses of the warehous complex.

- Hamburg Dungeon

The Hamburg Dungeon is a kind of museum which tells the dark side of the Hamburg history with real actors. The Dungeon is like a (Geisterbahn), but in the dungeon the visitors can take part in the adventure. For children the Hamburg Dungeon can be very scary because you see historikal szenes like the black death and the big stormflood of 1962.

-The Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg

The Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg is the biggest modelltrain show in the world and more than 1 million visitors have seen it. The area from the Wunderland is very fascinating because evey 15 minutes the area change from day to night and all lights at the trains and cars turn on. This big complex is about two floors big and you need about 2 houres to see all the fascinating minitures.

The Reeperbahn:

The Reeperbahn is one of St. Pauli's most famous and well known place. There are countless attractions - the bars and clubs countless erotic dances, sex shops and movie theatres.The street is lined with many restaurants, discos and a lot of bars. There are also strip clubs, sex shops and a sex-museum. The Operettenhaus, a musicaltheatre, is also located at the Reeperbahn. A famous landmarkt is the Davidwache, a police- of station.


Climate

Hamburgs climate is very differnet. The hole year its very windy, because the nortshea blow cold air to Hamburg. But in sommer Hamburg often has more than 28°C. In winter there often is a temparture about 1,3°C. But sometimes it comes to huge stormflood and high tide.

Musicals

Since the German premiere of Cats in 1985 there are always a number of musicals being played in Hamburg.One of the most famous Musical in Hamburg is the Lion King and the Dance of the Vampires. The theatre of the musical The Lion King is a large cpmpelx in the harbour, guests either arrive by boat or through the historic Old Elbe Tunnel.
