Could somebody tell me about magic and how is being a mage in Gothic 3?
Thank you!§danke §danke §danke §danke §danke :D :D :D
You need ancient knowledge (works in the same was as strength and other attributes, you raise it at a trainer etc.) in order to cast spells. And the more ancient knowledge, the better spells, more dmg, longer duration etc. Now to get spells... There's 3 spell schools, transformation (Adanos, learned at a druid) nastery (Innos, learned at a shrine of Innos) and Summoning (Beliar, learned at a shrine of Beliar). I tried being a mage.. But you find very little to regenerate your mana :( Hope it helped :D
I'm trying to play a pure mage. I'm only a few hours in the game though.
You can increase the size of your mana pool at a shrine; but it still takes only 2 to 4 spells to empty it. Alchemy helps, as you can replentish your mana with potions and mana plants aren't rare. But I haven't found a wine or bottle seller yet (still searching). So I tend to rest a lot.
Is there an other way to regenerate your mana except from potions and sleeping? I feel like a narcoleptic.
you could eat 20 Morning Dews :D

you aquire more ancient knowledge by reading the books scattered around in the game.. or easiest and best way is to pray at shrines.
select the option to grant you more knowledge and then you can add +5 or +1 on ancient knowledge.
there is a shrine at Ardea if thats easiest for you to find.

Really? Then I must have overlooked something, I prayed at the Shrine of Innos in Ardea and did not spot anything about ancient knowledge. That is good to know, I could have walked around and never found it.

Also whereabouts is the trainers that can teach you the various mage perks? Such as Fire Mage, or regenerating Mana and like
You learn ancient knowledge from magicians.. Such as Sebastian in Raddock.. Hope you havn't allied with the orcs :P

Hmm, did find lester on the beech, but i rested in his house. Which i now know was a bad idea, since Ardea got repopulated when i got back, and Nameless' friends was gone.
apart from shamans and alchemists training ancient stuff you can find and buy stone tables that works like plants. so far ive found two different tables with +5 and +10, and the traders selling them mostly have more than just one.
Im gonna start a new game and play as a mage and join the orcs or hashishin.. But I have no idea where to train my ancient knowledge after I wipe out Reddock? :D

Personally I dislike mana-based magic systems. If the mana refills automatically you have an endless amount of spells if you just wait for it to refill, but waiting is boring.
If you use mana potions to refill the mana pool, it feels like shooting with a gun and then reload it with more ammo (mana potion). Boring as well.
I got burned in Gothic 2 playing a mage. As a mage the game was either easy (if you had a lot of mana potions) or hard (if you didn't have any), not really balanced and fun. So I'll stick with playing a ranger/rogue/barbarian guy that sticks to melee in the Gothic universe from now on!
I love playing mages in general, but I guess I'll play mages in NWN2, which has a decent spell system compared to the mana based ones.
Magic to be honest seems a tad overpowered at the moment.
Unlike the first two games it's very easy to get your first attack spell (Lightning at 30 Ancient Knowledge) and Fireball shortly thereafter.
Also since there are lots and lots of herbs lying around and four or five different ways to make mana potions, if you learn how to make your own you should hardly ever run out.
And of course once you get access to the bigger summons (Demon/Golem) plus mana regen then it all becomes a bit easy (even on hard setting).
Also, since magic is ranged you also avoid all the issues regarding fighting animals since they should be well toasted by the time they get to you.
Jou said "gained access to mana regen". How? Through robes or staffs? Or is there a skill I don't know of?

I'm really interested ! More info please ! I'm starting a mage since i toasted my savegame files of my ~25-30 lvl warrior/assasin §cry (Out of memory crash while saving..... I have 2gb of ddr2 ....... riiiiight......)
What lvl is fireball ?
Look at the spell book. All the known spells are listed there with their requirements.
Anyways if you look at the spell book, you will notice that launching a fireball demands 50 acient knowledge and eats 15-30 mana. HOWEVER you will have to remember that if you only have 50 acient knowledge the fireball isn't very strong. When your AK increases every spell will become more powerfull. So there is a huge diffenrence with lets say a caster who has 50 knowledge and who has 100 knowledge.

How much Ancient KNowledge do you need in order to learn the basic fire ball spell?
50. You need 30 for lighting, the 'cheapest' dmg spell
noone answer where you can learn mana regeneration :/
anyone know where you learn it?
mmm in another post say "you can train mana regen as soon as you go to Vengard" but there is full of orcs right?you have to slain them all or something like that i gues...so from where you learn it to Vengard?:P
yea plz, where do you find the trainer for mana regent? that would make a mage's life a lot easier.

You learn it from the firemage inside the castle in the tower (not the one in the throne room) .. Don't remember his name, but you exit the throne room through one of the side-exits and go up some stairs.
You can learn mana regeneration from the Named high fire mage in the castle of the king in Vengard. Once you get inside. BTW you find the teleporter stone for this city in a cave with zombies close to Gotha.
mmm something else about mages...i saw the skill "learn quickly" and need 100 anchient knowledge...is that worthy?sound perfect...did you gain more learning points(how many?) every lvl up?and if yes where did you learn it?anyone know please?§danke
well about that i saw you can learn it from sebastian ... now i just have to take lvl to see if its worthy :P depend how many more skills points gives you,but did gives you every lvl same points or with higher lvls/knowledge etc you gain more points?:P
