Any tips for a player who got into the series via Gothic 3 to play the original Gothic? I'm mainly concerned about the different controls--limited mouse functionality, no WASD movement, etc.

Well... the controls need some getting used to, but then they become fairly comfortable. What you really have to watch out of are fights. Don't expect to win fights like in G3 - just by pressing the mouse button quickly enough. No, you'll have to use tactics in fights in first two parts.
And believe me, when you see an orc sooner than in the fourth chapter - RUN! You might be able to defeat one, but usually where's one, there are more...

Indeed Gothic 1 has weird controls but you`ll get used to them.You can use both mouse and WASD controls. Read FAQ`s ,manuals ,whatever u can get your hands on . But the story and atmosphere is way better than in gothic 3 :)

You can use WASD ... just go to the settings page. And the combat system uses the keyboard instead of the "click-click-click" system of Gothic 3, but in time I'm sure you'll like it, because it's much better and more complex. Just play the game and you're bound to get the hang of it, and if not, come to us and ask ... we're ready to help.

What do you mean by limited mouse functionality? It isn't really needed but it makes thing a lot more conferrable.

If I translate conferrable to German I get: übertragbar
If I tranlsate that to Dutch I get: overdraagbaar, which means transmissible.
If I translate draagbaar to English I get tolerable. Did you meant that perhaps?

PLUS, back-to-topic: I think the best game I ever played is indeed Gothic 1. :D Bless PB for making that, unfortunately for them they made profit only from Notr and G3(without FG???) Here (http://www.pluto13.de/index.php?navtarget=3&lang=en) it says that they didn't make FG§kratz
As for controls, they are weird to use. Funny thing is:
My uncle bought the German version in Austria, I played it for a while, together with my brother and cousin, and didn't get further than the first chapter, while I was like 9 years old (now 15):p I couldn't even read it... PS: We, all of us, didn't understamd how to pick things up, until someone pressed the, ehm.. damn it, the pick-up button§wall
The good thing: I was so excited, I bought the English version and wasn't disappointed at all and bought Gothic 2, after that 3. When 2 was completely thrashed I bought Notr with it, also very pleased with it.
Not with my Sound card driver, as I can't play 1 and 2 anymore §cry§cry§cry

Enjoy Gothic 1, I hope you buy Gothic 2Notr after you finished the first, as Gothic 1 is only slightly better. Gothic 3, too big world. (We go from 3 places (not counting Notr, as 1and2 both have only 3 to around 24 places with quests...)

I started playing Gothic 2 today after a lengthy pause and after five minutes I thought, maaaaaan is the atmosphere in Gothic awesome. I do love G2 as well, but it lacks something that the original has. Maybe it's just that I played it first.
