What we know about the nameless hero until now:

You are a brave, self-confident warrior. Misunderstood by the world, yet prepared for any danger. You fled your native island of Gaurus some time ago, but fate intervened and your boat was devoured by the sea. It flushed you out onto a small island named Faranga, where you freed the inhabitants from the raging Fire Titans.

After the events on Faranga there was not much that you could do.
Alone, in a world without hope, you joined the Inquisition and fled the Titans with them.
You had every hope that you could evade the Titans.

However, with your armour and your weapons lying at the bottom of the ocean, you have failed to find any peace.
You realise that you cannot shun your responsibilities.

You were the one who defeated the Titan on Faranga and it is you who must give the people fresh hope.

Enjoy!

A gnome will be one of the main characters of the game? Now that's a surprise ...

And they changed Patty's appearance a lot ...

This is how her actually must look like. In Risen 1, she looked bland and generic and nothing like in the R1's artworks.

Yeah, in Risen 1 all of the women looked almost the same. But I guess we should also consider the fact that in Risen 1 Patty was a bartender girl, so the looks had to be more common. Only in Risen 2 we'll see her real pirate potential.

Well they did have something on them that was a bit exagerated. But nothing wrong with that. Hope it will stay the same :)

It seems they'll make them more feminine, which is a good thing. Patty looks much cooler now, tough and feminine at the same time.

Yeah, but they all had the same faces and similar voices, which it was kinda creepy. I know this was because of budget constraints.

If PB would have put more effort on the other main characters, Patty was suppossed to look somewhat like this:

http://www.worldofrisen.de/images/gallery/6/8511d9c47718a8274643fb4a44d61519.jpg

But no, she looked exactly like Sarah, our shipwreck mutual.

And now, in Risen 2, she actually looks (in-game) like in that old artwork, but with a pirate outfit instead of the wench dress. Oh alright, barwoman you feminists.

Assassin of Kings
11.08.2011, 16:33
Yeah, I remember that artwork since before Risen 1 was released.:) But it doesn't look at all like the Patty we've seen in the game.

What about other characters? Do you think we'll meet any old acquaintances from Risen 1, such as Don Esteban or the gold-digging triplets?:D

Patty looks stunning! :) $§p4 And that older pirate fellow must be his famous father, Gregorious Steelbeard. And the voodoo priest from the trailer is there as well. Naturally rest of the character are brand new faces so not much can be said at this point. I wonder if we are going to meet Commandant Carlos? Wasn't he the ranking officer after Mendoza's fall?

And by the way that gnome chieftain is quite cute. Ofcourse I may think otherwise when it begins to hack my leg with a crude sword. :P In any case Its wonderfull that gnomes are given full attention at this time. They were the most orginal creatures in Risen so it was a mild dissapointment how little we got to know them. I'd like to know more about their orgins and culture. Whats their connection to the islands etc.

I imagined Venturo to be older. And that voodoo priest has wooden casts for broken bones? The gnome is a pirate?

Hero looks like Tom Cruse from the film "The last samurai". But i like the way he looks. I loved that movie :p
Patty and Steelbeard look like real pirates...i like their design as well...

and the female priest also looks fine...Even though i am not all that impressed with that vodoo magic crap...

That boy with the rifle for some reason reminds me Jim Hawkins from the book/film "Treasure Island". But he was a strong character. I hope he will look like him.

And the male priest is a total bullshit IMO...He looks like a clown if you ask me.
But thats just me...;)

And a pirate gnome??? This is getting weird i should say...
Risen is supposed to be a game for a more mature audience...I cant understand why developers are trying so hard to make a game for kids...

No wonder now if the same thing happened with the orcs in Gothic 3. Perhaps some kids desperately wanted orcs that could speak...

@Demonium
The gnome is awesome. As gnomes steal every human thing they get over, it would only be natural that some would steal a pirate hat and use it for themselves. It's actually quite logical. The gnome from Risen is the best "monster" PB has designed, and it would definitely go on my list as among the all time favourites.

Most of the orcs were your enemies in G1, but Ur-shak was a very important friend. And gnomes in R1 looked like they were as intelligent as orcs in G1.

Gnomes in Risen were the equivalent of the goblins in Gothic. And they weren't as intelligent as the orcs were. Sure, they were't mindless either, but you can't compare a few caves in which they gather the loot to the astonishing civilization the orcs have built (e.g. The Temple of the Sleeper).

I wager that the pirates in Risen 2 will use that gnome's thieving skills, rather than considering him to be a companion.

But a gnome for a companion???

Why not? Since they are smart enough to craft clothes and live in a sort of tribal society, I guess they could learn how to interact with humans, just like some orcs in G1 and G2. I really felt their potential used properly in R1 when we didn't have the possibility to talk to them, or get quests from them.

UrukGox
22.08.2011, 12:42
I did not see any potential in gnomes. The only thing they could do is to steal something while I sleep, and flee into a hole in the ground.

I don't think that you can generalize gnomes like that, just look at humans how different they had organized, some tribes don't seem any more advanced then the gnomes in Risen.

If the only contact with humans that you would had would be from running away from cannibals, then you would not see much potential in them either.

Normal gnomes are stronger than normal goblins, and even they carry blades, instead of rotten wood like goblins. And gnomes are braver, because they don't mind attacking you from the front, unlike goblins who apparently consider their life's mission to literally bash your ass, and won't ever dream of fighting face to face.

... yes, goblins are lot smarter than gnomes ...but goblin skeleton is stronger and smarter... He can crush 10 gnomes like cockroaches.:p

Nisarg
22.08.2011, 16:42
I always felt that it was odd the way skeletons are stronger than live beings in quite a few German games (haven't played all of them though). Doesn't matter if it's Gothic or Risen or Drakensang.

Why is a gnome with a pirate hat a strange thing? Risen already proved that:

1) Gnomes live in a tribal society and are organized. They have chieftains and worshipped Gryger as their leader. I wonder though how does killing gryger change their society? Maybe they are thankfull for what we have done or maybe they'll hate us. Intresting to see...

2) Gnomes know how to use fire, hunt, collect herbs. use various items such as quality swords and so forth. They use very complex clothes made from leather. They do collect all kinds of items and I assume that they use those items for trading as well. Those are signs of an intelligence.

3) Gnomes aren't mindless as they use tactics and traps to gain advantage. They also know how to avoid the same ancient traps as they tend to populate tempples and such locations. They are likely very well aware what happens in the islands.

4) They defiently communicate with eachother, so logically it ain't that far fetched to assume that they must also know how to communicate with humans. Aren't they the orginal inhabitants of the islands. Maybe they just didn't want to speak to humans at first as they consider us invaders and looters. Brute big men who destroy and pillage.

The whole world being in chaos and monsters roaming the land may have changed their views on humans and hope to gain new allies against common threath :)

Yes, but the goblins are the ones who look more terrifying. Gnomes seem rather fluffy and adorable when you first look at them.:D

My guess is that not all of them collaborate with humans and that the gnome pirate is just as exception, just like Ur-Shak was in Gothic.

I wonder how old are you actually. That's because somehow I got the feeling that you aren't that old but I might be mistaken.
Anyway most adult gamers are grown ups with soul of kids. My father who is 50 years old would be an example and somehow I get the feeling that the PB dude with the sleeper amulet could be another good example.

I am 24 by the way...and i dont like dragonball effects instead of blood in games. I dont like weapons to feel like toys with a huge aiming cirle...
Last time i remember such things were in Spyro the Dragon...and that was at least a decade ago...
Also i dont like scooby doo or gnomes for companions...and i would like to see a brothel in a pirate game...

Don't worry. I'm allmost 25 myself and I have 50GB of comic magazines on my PC that I transfer and read on my phone (mostly walt disney, looney tunes, scooby doo and asterix).

And I also apreciate a good mature and realist game. But I don't think that the gnome means R2 will be a cartoonish game. For what we know he might not be able to speak very well. Might just act like some kind of a tamed pet.

I don't know why you assume that talking Gnome has to act childish.

As for the effect it does look pretty bad, and I don't see the point of it, it makes the atmosphere worse. I also hope that you can completely turn off slow down motion effect as it seem anty climatic for me, also wouldn't that mess up your timing when you are fighting?

I got the feeling that blood effects weren't there for half the stuff they should have been for. In the final version, I think that the the dragon ball effect will also have a large cloud of blood. Whether or not that will be toned down remains to be seen. We had something like such effects in Risen too, remember the shield blocking and the power attacks?

Assassin of Kings
23.08.2011, 18:49
Why are so skeptical about that gnome character? I don't think it's childish at all. The hero from Gothic had a talking orc as a friend, and yet that wasn't immature and cartoonish at all.

Dez

Gnomes are humorious and mystical at the same time as they are cute and dangerous. Piranha bytes have designed few iconic creatures iike snappers and scavengers along the road and I'd definitely place Gnomes in that category. Heck gnome design surpasses everything they've created before. Although ORCs in gothic 3 were equally great :)

So whoever came up with the idea about gnomes should get some kind of artistic award. :)

I think, most monsters including minecrawlers were in their best form in Gothic 1.

I am actually replaying G1 right now and everyone near the old mine is talking about them and how you should fear them. There are some people in other camps also mentioning minecrawlers. All this is making such a hype about them and you don't even know what to expect. And then when you enter the first sidetunnel and notice a bunch of huge spider like creatures it's let's say very intense.

Same goes with the first encounter of a shadowbeast in G1. And as a personal experience I'd say that when I first saw a swampshark I just turned and ran like the devil was after me (when they are travelling in the water it seems like there is a huge body underwater making them look like huge dinosaurs - just like the Loch Ness monster).

Demonium
24.08.2011, 08:45
Well, creatures in Gothic had a cool presentation and background story from other NPCs, but except from that, the environment those monsters lived was well suited and made you feel like its a real world...

About minecrawlers i was referring to Gothic 3 because graphically (model, texture, animation) it was the most successful and best looking creature...

About gnomes: If there is a gnome companion, I sense that there may be also a gnome island and a gnome 'society'. If this proves to be true, it will be totally kickass...

Assassin of Kings
24.08.2011, 10:46
You can't call the gnomes' organization form a "society". They're rather a tribe than a society.

Anyway, I was just fighting a lot of gnomes in Risen and I gotta say they're really cool. Even if a gnome isn't very strong, when they fight together they actually use a strategy. Some of them attack you from the front, whilst other throw knives and other objects at you from a distance, and if you're not careful and fast enough when fighting them, they could bring you down. I think the gnome companion of R2 will be pretty useful because of those skills.
