My Father told me a riddle not very hard but not very easy too(sorry if my english are not very good):p

One day a Doctor asked a Farmer nearby:
Doctor:How many sheep do you have my good man(he thought the Farmer doesn't know how to count):p
And the farmer answered.
Farmer:If I had as many as I have and the half of what I have and 5 and 50 I would make them 100:cool:
Then the Doctor turned away and left like a wet bird.:p

How many sheep the Farmer has?;)
Do you know the answer?:D

Hmmm... no... maybe you didn't post the riddle right... http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a87/yavanna_1986/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

If I had as many as I have ( x + x) and the half of what I have ( 1/2 * ( x + x ) and 5 and 50 I would make them 100.

x + x + 1/2 * ( x + x ) + 5 + 50 = 100

3 * x + 55 = 100

3 * x = 45 => x = 15

i think "half of what i have" would be 1/2*x, not x+x

Look... I've been doing exercises like this one since I was in 4th grade...

It's not my fault if it's some sort of weird riddle... I just solved the problem... http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a87/yavanna_1986/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

And no, I won't try harder, because this is the answer :p ... if I would find this problem in a math book, this would be the answer...

Or maybe I just can't understand what you wrote... http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a87/yavanna_1986/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

But when I am serious, I just don't use any kind of smiley in my post...
You will know when I am serious...

And the people who only said 15% from x lost 1 point at that exam...

The answer is still 15 in my opinion...

You said:

If I had as many as I have and the half of what I have ( this is a present tense ) and 5 and 50 I would make them 100

The answer would be 18 only in this case:

If I had as many as I have ( this is a present tense ) and the half of what I had and 5 and 50 I would make them 100

Like I said... half of what I have... at the present moment, after adding x to my number, I have 2*x

Einstein's test...

--Einstein give us a puzzle like this, for he stressed examining assumptions, and once wrote: "The important thing is to not stop questioning."
--Facts:
-There are 5 houses in 5 different colours
-In each house lives a person with a different nationality..
-These 5 owners drink a certain beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar and keep a certain pet.
-No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar or drink the same drink.

--Hints:
1. The Brit lives in a red house.
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
3. The Dane drinks tea.
4. The green house is on the left of the white house.
5. The green house owner drinks coffee.
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
8. The man living in the house right in the centre drinks milk.
9. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
10. The man who smokes Blend lives next to the one who keeps cats.
11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
12. The owner who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.
13. The German smokes Prince.
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
15. The man who smokes Blend has a neighbour who drinks water.

The question for the Einstein test is ... WHO KEEPS THE FISH?

For the Einstein Problem:

I solved it MECHANICALLY then I looked it up online and theres a so-called "real" answer to this question. Also, some site claimed that Einstein said 98% of the people in this world cant solve it. Well I solved it... but I guess not for the "real" answer. I could tell you the real answer but it would spoil the good riddle.

Mechincally, the answer is The German keeps the Fish.

your mistake is here:

a+b=c => 4a-3a+4b-3b=4c-3c

you can't come from the first to the second step. these two are different things ;)

as long as it's an equality i can change the therms how ever i want as long as the resunt is the same... so what u said is wrong

the strangest thing.... :D
the theory of 4=3

a+b=c => 4a-3a+4b-3b=4c-3c => 4a+4b-4c=3a+3b-3c =>
=> 4(a+b-c)=3(a+b-c) => 4=3 the thing is thats not 4=3, it's in fact 0=0 ;) try replacing a, b and c with numbers to understand cause (a+b-c) = 0 so 4*0=3*0 ;) so 0=0 §lehrer

the answer to the 4=3 problem is such : in mathemathics you cannot divide by 0 .simplyfying the ecuation by a+b-c is simplyfying it by 0 since a+b=c.You can make many infinite more numbers equal if you use this falsity.
the answer to the first post is 30.Read between the lines people :).

Just a thought ;) I wonder if there is someone here who could tell me how to put 10 coins in five rows of four (there must be four coins in each row and five such rows must exhist). It isn't easy but not impossible either ;) if anyone thinks he knows the answer, he can use @ to show how he put the coins.

Could you reformulate please..because it doesn't make any sense. If you think mathemathical or matrix-ional 5 rows of 4 means 20 elements. So reformulate please or rescue me from my imbecility.

Demonstrate that every even number can be written as the sum of 2 prime numbers.

The way you formulated the problem my answer is correct Fnoop. You should give some more information on the parametres of the problem like no 2 rows my have more then one common element.Without those parametres there are 7 rows of 4 elements each in a 10 element column. So shoot the parameters .Also your example :

is not correct in regards with the parameters you have given. There are only 3 rows. You must keep in mind that an example is a correct answer by definition.

I found an interesting riddle yesterday and I did solved it alone. I like these "brain teasers" so here you are:

"How old is Alex ?" A friend asked my one day
"Alex? Well.. 18 years ago he had three time his son's age"
"Yeah but NOW he is twice older than his son"
"Yep, and that's why it's not that hard to find his, and his son's age"

So? How old are they??

Lazor's riddle is much harder.

Just a simple system of two linear equations\

Edit: Here is a harder one.
You have 10 bags. You must put a certain number of coins in each of the bag so you can pay any sum from 1 to 1000 without opening any of the bag, but just by combining the bags

you must be able to obtain any value between 1 and 1000 and you don't have to use all the bags at once.
You have only 10 possibilities with your solution. 990 others different values needed :D

By power I do not mean potential or capability. think figuratively.
No more that 10 needed. You can obtain even a greater number of values just by using those 10 bags. if I say that number it might be to obvious

1 2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256 512

nirolF
11.06.2008, 21:04
guess so. on the last bag you can put any number between 489 and 512. But you can obtain those numbers using the others bags and since the catch of the riddle are the powers of the number 2 from 0 to 9, 512 should be the answer

Not necessarily. You can determine those numbers without even touching the powers of 2 thingy.:p But it's pretty hard to do by hand. Easiest way would be to write an app that passes through numbers from 1 to 1000 and for each one determine if it can be generated by using the previously added numbers in a vector. If the number cannot be generated using the other numbers you add it to the previously mentioned vector. And you keep adding until you reach 1000. And that should get you the vector that ends with 489.

For the testing part(if it can be generated using the previously added numbers) you can use a backtracking algorithm and check all possible combinations if they add up.

But it's a whole lotta work just to get to those numbers.:p So maybe the powers of 2 thingy is key.:p

This is not a pure programming problem, just math. The algorithm you explain is correct (actualy this is how I solved it on paper). Using it you end up with the same powers of 2 and no other numbers (except the last one). There are no other solutions.
When solving it on paper you easily see the pattern and deduce the powers of 2 solution. Then you just have to verify some base cases to see it's correct.

To have 1 you need 1 = 2^0
To have 2 you need 2 = 2^1(as you can not use 2 bags with 1)
To have 3 you use 1+2
To have 4 you need 4 = 2^2
To have 5 you use 4+1
To have 6 you use 4+2
To have 7 you use 4+2+1
To have 8 you need 8 = 2^3
and so one..
You can see that you can generate any number using the power of 2 numbers smaller than the curent number.
Ex: for any number between 16 and 31 I just need the powers of 2 from 0(1) to 4 (16); for any number between 256 and 511 I only need powers of 2 till 9(512).
I think you can verify this using induction

No. If he would, you said something wrong in your translation from Bulgarian.

Day 1: 7 o'clock it could be 07:00, or 19:00 but in the way you represent it that would be irrelevant.

Day 2: 07:15 in the morning, there is sun. He is 15 minutes too late. Unless he already did the gymnastics, in which case the riddle was random.
