Is it at all possible to win Gothic 3 on the easiest difficulty setting without dying on your very first try? I've had lots of fun trying to do this in games like Divine Divinity, Divinity 2, Bioshock 1 & 2, Two Worlds and Fallout: New Vegas... I only succeeded in the BioShock games, though...
The main things I'd like to know before I start are these:
1. Are there lots of instadeath situations in the game? And are those "unfairly" difficult to forsee?
2. Is there any way to pause the game while you're having a look at your inventory?
3. Is there an "instant escape teleport" spell or magic item in the game, and does it work everywhere?
4. Can you grind? Or are enemies to kill for gold and xp and those plants that permanently increase your hp in limited supply?
5. Can you respec your character in case you should build him in an ineffective way?
6. Do I even have a chance or should I forget about the whole thing, even if I use cheesy tactics, play on easy, take it slow and maybe ask for mild spoilers on this forum from time to time?
More info about my game btw:
-I've never played Gothic 1 or 2 before
-I'm playing with the latest patch (was it 1.75?)
-I've started a game without the re-balancing and had a short look around
-I'm pretty familar with playing roguelikes but by no means an expert gamer or anything like that. I just challenge myself for fun. =)
1. Are there lots of instadeath situations in the game? And are those "unfairly" difficult to forsee?
Yes. When you engage in fight with a magic caster. There are lot of them; goblin shamans, orc shamans, human mages, undead mages/priests
2-3 fireballs are usually enough to cause instant death.
2. Is there any way to pause the game while you're having a look at your inventory?
When I played Gothic 3 with Community Patch 1.7-something the game paused when you took a look at inventory.
3. Is there an "instant escape teleport" spell or magic item in the game, and does it work everywhere?
Yes. There are teleport stones you can use anywhere, but note it takes a lot of time for a player to teleport. Teleportation can be easily distrusted by an enemy's attack.
4. Can you grind? Or are enemies to kill for gold and xp and those plants that permanently increase your hp in limited supply?
I don't remember, but there are some extra extra XP for quests.
5. Can you respec your character in case you should build him in an ineffective way?
Without cheating you can't undo the spent learning points you gain each level (+10 learning points every level)
6. Do I even have a chance or should I forget about the whole thing, even if I use cheesy tactics, play on easy, take it slow and maybe ask for mild spoilers on this forum from time to time?
You can give it a try just for fun. But if this is the first time you intend to play Gothic 3 it is going to be a super difficult task to achieve.

Well, when I try this with different games, the question is usually when I die, not if I die. It's fun to see just how far I can get on my first try.
But is that "2-3 fireball instadeath thing" also the case on the easiest difficulty setting?

I cannot give clear yes or no answer. 2-3 fireballs can neutralize any player on any difficulty level if the maximum hit points are low and if protection against fire is low.
I always played on medium/difficult level of difficulty setting, and "2-3 fireballs instadeath" always applied if I didn't have sufficient protection against fire attacks even when I developed my character thoroughly.
As you progress and gain more hit points and better protection against fire, 2-3 fireball instadeath thing won't apply especially if one chooses easiest difficulty setting.
Technical spoiler on character development and spending learning points. No plot here.

Lucky with gothic 3 you can spend as many learning points on hit points as you want
Thanks for the advice! I'm currently roaming the wilderness exploring and killing wild animals. Here are a few questions that have crossed my mind:
1. How do I differ items that are free to take from items that would count as stolen when picked up? For example, the guy in the very beginning of the game has a teleporter stone and a few other things on a table. Can I take those? Also, some chests have orange or red names, does that mean that they are private property or just that they are hard to lockpick?
2. That world map that a couple of vendors sell, will that give me some kind of automap?
3. Is there any way to tell how dangerous a monster is without actually getting hit by it (I can't summon creatures yet)? I ran into a Lurker on the beach which had its name in dark red. Did that signal its level or just its hostility? Also, I saw some monster in the forest that made the music sound very foreboding. Whas that a warning sign?
4. A guy offers me hunter training for ten wolf pelts. But when I kill wolves I only get their meat. How do I skin them? And if I manage to give him ten pelts, will the training still cost me learning points?
5. Those I defeat in combat look rather dead to me, but the manual says I get to choose between killing and just knocking down people and orcs. What's the difference between lethal and non-leathal KO's?

1. As long as the items aren't in someone's house, I you can take them freely(meaning you can get the things on the table). The chests with colours mean they haven't been opened yet. Chests in the wild have the same colour, although they don't belong to anyone.
2. The world map can be looted from the orcish leader in the village you begin in. It doesn't give you an MMO-like minimap, but when you take a look at it, you can see the enire world and where you currently are(you are an arrow)
3. Umm, if the monster looks menacing you should probabably just avoid it Or you can hit it with an arrow, see how much damage that does and decide for yourself whether you can take it on. Red colour indicates hostility - the monster will instantly attack you. As for the music, I think it was just a coincidence, but I'm not sure. I haven't noticed the music change just by spotting a monster.
4. The pelts can be found in various places in Cape Dun(the village the hunter is next to). Yes, the training will still cost you LPs. And the hunter can teach you how to skin various animals and take their trophies(claws, tusks, etc.)
5. When you "kill" a non-red NPC, they just lie unconcious and will get up after a while - to finish them off, click on them while on the ground and press "W".

Guys, do you think I stand a chance of defeating Built? I mean with that protection and stats can I survive two series of Bulit's blows? I know it's risky. Built kills Nameless Hero instantly if he manages to knock Nameless Hero out. I am on lookout for a crossbow. None of the merchants offer any crossbows for sale. I can kill two birds with one stone by beating the hell out of Built because he's got a nice sword too. My sword sucks, it only does 30-something damage.

I need to post this. I must report my near death experience (#6) - the closest to death of all of them. That golem almost got me.
Well I put off beating up Bulit. It's way too risky. Maybe until I get master level in two-handed weapons. Beside I got the crossbow from the templar - Gor Na Ran. I used ice block spell and then finished him off but before the another incoming templar could beat me to the ground. I managed to snatch the Gor Na Ran's crossbow off his back.
My first try to get the crossbow was a guard next to barricade bordering with orc land. I wasn't lucky there. :P

I really shouldn't have gone there. I've never explored the abandoned mine before in the Golden Mod.
The skeleton mage just threw at Nameless Hero ice block spells one after another untill undead magus killed him.

What the hell are all those skeletons doing there, man?
I thought that they help to kill me my enemies but in the end i got stuck in skeletons and sleeper killed me with fireballs. Skeletons turned my game to laggfest.
