I have multiple partitions: 1 for Windows and its Pagefile, 1 For apps, 1 for data, 1 for backup, 1 for linux and a last for linux swap. Windows update notifies me of updates and I chose those which I want to download and install. This, in combination with ESS, works perfectly so long as I don't let idiots control the PC.

It is a myth that the updates recognize pirate versions of windows and act as really bad malware. And that this sometimes happens to genuine copies too.
Uhm. No, it's not a myth.
Windows Genuine Advantage IS being installed via the updates. And WGA checks, with some kind of list of known pirated serials I believe, if your Windows is pirated. And yes, there were cases where WGA was wrong.

But it's not acting as "really bad malware", as in malicious software. Unless you're Chinese. So Mal was right, sort of at least. And you can be without installing it, so it's not malware in that sense either.

AutoPatcher is also useful as an alternative to Automatic Updates.
