Tomb Raider Legend
A really short game but with a good plot. ;]

Yeah, pretty much.
By the way, the combat system is pretty good once your character gets better at it, it's like a combination of G2 and G3 with timing wich is not necessary to make combos but it is to hit at the right time.
Actually the whole game is a combination of G2 and G3 with some twist here and there.

Alan Wake
So confusing at first, but as I keep going further everything becomes much more clearer.
Basically Alan is the protagonist of his own thriller/horror story that came to life, best thing about it is that he's missing one week of his life, the week in which he wrote that story so you can't know what's going to happen. Oh and of course for the cliche - he's doing all this to save his wife

Yeah, i loved the combat system. Too bad the story was so sooo sooooooo cliché.

Roll-fucking-eyes. I am bludgering tired of this shit.
This is so cliché. That is soooo cliché.
Listen, it's not clichés that make or break a story. It's how they are twisted and recast until something new shows up, something interesting. And the characters.
Gothic 2 really changed my view of dragons. Maybe I'm not that well-read, but I never thought dragons were intelligent beings, army commanders, and so on. And I expected each of the dragons to be black and faceless, and instead I got elemental dragons, which is a very interesting twist -- the elements are supposed to belong to the good gods.
I've not played Risen that much, so I don't know whether this rant applies to it too, but I had to get this out of my system.
-
Why do people freak out so easily?
Anyway, Risens type of cliché was worse then just story cliché. Everything was cliché. Combat was a mix between G2 and G3, story was G2 with itsy bitsy changes here and there, guild system was identical to G2, graphics where identical to G3 and the whole interface was the same.
I'm not complaining about the game, i loved it but it just didn't feel like a new game. It felt like the Gothics reskinned, renamed and sold. I loved it, but that's because it was so Gothic. Next time i'd like to see a more different game, i'd love that rumor of a steampunk game to be true. After seeing a little of the Bioshock atmosphere i bet PB could do it 10x better.

EvE Online TYRANNIS
With this expansion, which will be released on May 18th, EvE Online is, slowly but surely, also moving on the planets surface, for now only in 'Civ' manner for mineral exploiting. Not a while ago planets were merely a visual culise. Thousants of planets to exploit, to conquer, and to defend..... Threre's in some future also a prospect of fighting in planet's athmosphere, and walking / interacting in space stations, something similar like in Freelancer.
With each 'step' EvE's comming bigger and more complex.
EDIT: 4 Year Old Skye playing Eve Online
Who said EvE Online is a complex game hehe

Well fucking hell. Find me one person, a SINGLE fucking individual on this whole forum of millions of posts who wanted Risen to be something original and NOT a Gothic copy, besides you and me. And PB, seeking money, delivered what the public wanted.

What's wrong with that when the end result is pretty good? Besides, it's not a Gothic copy. It's a covert sequel.

Wut? You mean all of us want PB only to make games that are based on Gothic? Well that would get boring, it already did with Risen.

What matters is that I wanted an rpg similar to that of G2.
I don't mean story needs to be the same, but how they make their
rpg's. Open world, how they make enviroments, no silly mainstream
"sophisticated" rpg elements.
Of course it will be similar to Gothic 2. They wanted to use the elements that
made G1 and G2 so good, and considering. Also it's fantasy medieval,
and they still wanted the slightly more darker and realistic version of fantasy.
Of course it will be similar.
If you look at Bioware games. Neverwinter's night 2 has many similarities to DA.
That is not however what makes DA a bad game (that it is similar).
Btw, PB has had very similar settings in all games, and similar type of "classes". Because they started a new genere doesn't mean they have to
make everything different.
I liked many parts of G2 combat. In G3 they tried something new, and failed.
Should they go completely away from that combat system, or should they
continue trying to take the good aspects, and make a good combat system.
Risen's story isn't the greatest things, but in terms of plots most games
have a very "hero saving the world" type of story.
Risen lacked implementation of it. DA had a much larger budget, and has
many stunning cutscenes. Of course it's story-telling will be superior.
There are the other things however, like most other gameplay aspects that
I don't like. I like how PB makes their games, and It's ridicilous to go
completely away from that just because their starting a new project.
Also because the guy in the lighthouse is named Jack is just a funny little
detail. It's the feel of the game that is important.
Risen could be alot better though. Give them good time and high budget,
so they could add much cool features like cut-scenes, better animations
and more time to balance game, make world somewhat larger, and
make it more dense, with more change as story progesses (this was neglected in Risen).

Y halo thar, contradiction. Believe me, if Risen has a problem, it's not the lack of cutscenes, and not the animations.

You're right, it's the lack of originality. This so called "Gothic" game they're trying to make is going to get boring. That steampunk idea was excellent, why not a new genre?
-
Actually, I don't mind medieval fantasy.
So long as it's not in an European setting, so long as the magic doesn't come from runes or crystals that need circles or seals or what the fuck ever to control, so long as not everything is split into "government side - rebel side - mage side", so long as the main hero has a damn personality instead of "blank slate with occasional peppering of sarcasm", so long as you don't have a crazed pseudo-mentor whom you have to kill at the end of the game, etc. etc.
All these were new once, and fresh, but after repeated use, they've become stale and rotten.
-
Well, DA's storytelling had some brilliant parts.
The large battle in the beginning (especially the part where Duncan dies)
had extremely good editing, givin you a Lord of the Rings feel, making
it an ingame movie.
I believe there were quite some work into making that, also you need
lots of animations.
This was what drove me playing the game (the storytelling),
but unfortunately I found the other parts really boring so I never finished it,
as most was endless enemy fighting with totally predictable and generic
encounters.
When I speak of rpg elements, I did not mean this. This is always
an important part.
The other are how they choose the gameplay to be. Do you need to think
for yourself, or do you follow a marker all the time. Those kinda things
are what I referred to by "sophisticated" rpg elements.

Okay, I'm hating Chapter 3 and 4 in Risen. High level character gameplay is just beautiful and everything is great and all but... those two chapters are Gothic 1&2 all over again.

Not really. Chapter 3 and 4 is just alot of dungeon crawling.
The story part is quite thin, and little changes in the world.
G1 were more similar to this, with much fighting in the end, and not so much
quests etc, although it was better than Risen.
G2 had the secret library, finding a crew, getting a ship, which were quite
good quests, and created a break between killing dragons and the halls of
Irdorath. Which both were more varied than Risen's last parts.
I'd say it's more unlike G1 and G2 as last parts in Risen is just
hours long fighting, similar to what we see in many other RPG's,
while G1 and (especially) G2 were less so.
