Gothic 2 is going down with HD4870 1GB
Hey Guys,
I hope somebody can help me here.
So, I've got a new Hd4870 1GB and I start Gothic 2 again...
So in Xardas Tower everything is right, but when i came out the frames are going down ... I hear that this Problem just come with the HD4870 because the driver is ... to new .. for Gothic 2 -.- ... do somebody know a answer?

Which system? Windows 7 maybe? (If so,kinda normal, i didn't found a solution till now).

Its not the graphics card, I got an 4870 1GB too and its working perfectly.

Since it's being mentioned, I have the same problem on a HD4850. Quite silly, really. Is there any more sensible solution than switching to old drivers?

Yes, ... you could talk nicely to your PC to don't act like that. Another possibility could be to tell us something about your system, ... it's up to you!

I dont have Win 7, look at my Signature ( XP 32 )
Do you think it will run better with an older driver?

Just how low do those frames go?
20-25?

You are playing with 300% distance and 300% character view right?
The solution is to knock both those back 60%, that way it should run fine!
Only Kidding. I had the same problem as you when I first decided to re-look at Gothic2 with my 4GHz dual core 4gb HD4870 setup. In short I couldnt bloody believe it. However with the help and hints I received here, I went into the INI file in your SYSTEM folder (in Gothic 2 Directory) and edited all the memory allocation settings. After that, the game ran totally smooth with never a blip.
I am going to be lazy here and auggest you search my previous posts (there aren't many at this stage) for the direct solution that you need. However, in the end I never just quadrupled the memory allocations, I multiplied the original values by 8.

Setting all the graphic options at max, the frame rate is little faster than a slideshow. I didn't lower any setting except trying to disable the fog (it was a performance killer on my older rig) because I *demand* it to work like a charm on this PC.
Anyway checking the INI is definitely the logical step. Gonna check it out.

Here are the new memory allocation settings I edited in the INI file:
zTexCacheOutTimeMSec=960000
zTexCacheSizeMaxBytes=128000000
zSndCacheOutTimeMSec=40000
zSndCacheSizeMaxBytes=80000000
With the above, I was more or less getting a solid 60 FPS (obvioulsy with V-sync enabled) apart from the odd turn whilst in a particulary animated part of Khorinis. So what I did next was simply double the above values and that was enough to have the game running as sweet as it possibly could be. However, it is unlikley to be necessary to increase the memory allocated for sound by much if anything at all. Infact, by doing so you are just wasting system resources.
There are other tweaks such as enabling Anti-Aliasing and forcing 16X Anisotropic filering through CCC (or Nvidea equivalent) is a must for this game.

I singled out the biggest performance killer. Reflexes.

That might be the case, but with that card you have and a presumable 4GB Ram (vastly faster ram than existed back in G2's day), you shouldnt have to worry about any performance killer! So long as the program has access to all your system resources, the game should run like a dream.

I know. But what am I supposed to do?
That's what I did so far and it helps just a little:
zTexCacheOutTimeMSec=3840000
zTexCacheSizeMaxBytes=512000000
zSndCacheOutTimeMSec=160000
zSndCacheSizeMaxBytes=320000000
FPS is 20-25, maxed out except reflexes, 1440x900, and that's just outside of Xardas' tower.
Inside the tower the fps rate goes all the way up to the refresh rate.
Reflexes kill my game no matter what, 7 fps at best.
There's something deeply wrong going on between Ati cards or drivers and Gothic II.

Hmh. Not exactly directed @ Bastardo, but just wanted to quote the values.
zTexCacheOutTimeMSec...
Is this supposed to mean the time that the resources are allowed to stay in cache without the game referring to them?
With each access, the "cache timer" is reset.
When time is up, resource is set as "volatile" to enable any suitable sized "cache missed" asset to take its place?
Currently it would seem to be 3.84 microseconds or 3840 milliseconds, which is preposterous.
If this is so, it might be curious to see what "-1" value combined with insane cache size would cause.
It will either throw an error, or keep gathering stuff on cache, until every single texture in the game is in it.

Damn, I changed _MSec values too. I don't think I should've done that.
EDIT- Yeah, original MSec values and my _Bytes value help a bit. 30-40fps outside the tower. It should be a steady 60 throughout the whole game though.

Waaahhhaat!
By doing the above, you are multiplying the original vlaues in the game by 16!!!
Try copying the values in my post precisely as they are posted in this thread as those ones have ALREADY been multiplied by 4!!! (and actually, you dont need to increase the sound memory at all)
@CashWoody. Sorry if it aint working for you dude but I had the exact same problem with my 4870 UNTIL I edited the memory allocation in the INI file.
Ermm....how is your PageFile/Virtual Memory?
