    Gothic ½ - SystemPack — is the system and exec files update package, that modifies and develops game working ability of "GOTHIC1", "GOTHIC2: Classic", "GOTHIC2: The Night Of The Raven", mods and addons based on them.


    Main modifications:
    • Package Adaptation for work with WinXP, WinVista, Win7, Win8, WinBlue, Win10;
    • Package Adaptation for support of "GOTHIC1", "GOTHIC2: Classic", "GOTHIC2: The Night Of The Raven" considering all changes and corrections;
    • Automatic dynamic memory and system files patching for all versions of supported games;
    • Surround sound system integration - X3DAudio - for all versions of supported games;
    • The package uses own *.INI file with partially modifying internal options for all versions of supported games.

    In case of "GOTHIC1", SystemPack supports:

    — Original (not modificated) source Gothic.exe, ver. (1.08k), that will be renamed from Gothic_backup.exe to Gothic_snowball.exe during SystemPack installation (only for Russian version "GOTHIC1" by 1C/Snowball Interactive);

    Changes and fixes in game system files (ZenGin)

    GRAPHICS, VISUALIZATION, RENDER:
    • Customizable FOV Hor+:
      — Originally created as FOV Vert-, i.e. the horizontal FOV is locked and the vertical FOV decreases with increasing aspect ratio of the monitor, i.e. the wider the screen the more it actually infringes the field of view:

      — This has now been reversed leading to the vertical FOV being locked, while the horizontal one increases with increasing aspect ratio of the monitor which provides a better overall experience:

      — There is the option to change the vertical FOV via a parameter in the file (SystemPack.ini option VerticalFOV).
    • Increased draw distance for the world, NPC and portals:
      — To increase the draw distance of the game world a new multiplier has been introduced in the file (SystemPack.ini option DrawDistanceMultiplier).
      — To adjust the draw distance for when NPCs are inserted / removed exist two options in the file (SystemPack.ini options SPAWN_INSERTRANGE and SPAWN_REMOVERANGE).
      — The draw distance for portal rooms can be changed in the file (SystemPack.ini options OutDoorPortalDistanceMultiplier, InDoorPortalDistanceMultiplier and WoodPortalDistanceMultiplier).

      — The amount of memory for the classes used in the rendering engine has been increased: zCRndAlphaSortObject_Vob and zCRndAlphaSortObject_WorldPoly since memory overflows occurred, which caused an infinite loop (picture freezes, audio is playing);
      — Increased the number of alphaVOB objects to prevent the game from crashing when rendering huge draw distances.

    DISPLAY AND MONITOR:
    • D3DIM700.dll
      — Automatic patching of D3dim700.dll to support high-resolution monitors with support ranging from WinXP to WinBlue.
      — Disabled the restriction for the creation of higher resolutions, which previously caused the game to crash with the following error:

      This is due to a built-in check in a function in the Direct3DCreateDevice; if the resolution was greater than 2048 pixels, the device could not be created. The function is now changed so that up to 524288 pixels can be verified, as opposed to the 2048 before.

      — To display all available resolutions in the game menu, the option extendedMenu=1 in the file Gothic.ini has to have the value 1.
      — Increased the amount of memory used by the game to accomodate larger resolutions, otherwise the game crashes when it is full.
    • Correct aspect ratio of maps:
      Initially, the maps were displayed with regards to the aspect ratio of the monitor, hence they potentially looked stretched:

      — This has been changed so that now all maps are being displayed as if on a 4:3 monitor to display them as intended by the developers:

    VIDEO:
    • BINKW32.dll
      — Fixed most known problems concerning video playback on all operating systems.
      — Fixed scaling issues when playing videos in Windows Vista and above; these were originally not being displayed when enabling scaling.
      — Now uses software scaling to scale videos which increased CPU usage when playing movies compared to the original method (not of any significance for modern systems).
      — Added support for the video library Framewave, to reduce the load on the CPU (using multithreading and SSE2 if available).
      — Removed the limit for the resolution of video files. "Gothic" contains a built-in check to ensure that when you open a video file, its resolution is less than or equal to the resolution of the game. This led for example to the fact that when playing at 1024x768 it was impossible to play the video in the resolution 1280x800 since it would simply not open.
      — Now any video tells the game that it has the same resolution as the game, performing image scaling inside, so that there is no longer a limit on the resolution of video files.
      — Implemented support for the definition of instructions for SSE/SSE2; previously there might have been freezes, crashes and videos not being played. If there are no instructions for the processor, the hotfix BinkFix will not be used.

    AUDIO:
    • MSSDS3DH.m3d
      The library is completely rewritten from scratch while the technology has moved from X3DAudio/XAudio2 to MS. Since X3DAudio is a software library, all that was implemented in it should work fine on any sound card.
      — Fully implemented basic support for surround sound and reverb (which used to work when selecting EAX2 in the sound driver settings of the game and is now realized with DirectSound 3D HW); this comes into effect in rooms/caves.
      Bug fixes for the reverb sound in the game:
      — Fix for disabled sound on sound cards with a sampling frequency above 48kHz.
      — Default sound settings when starting the game are 192kHz and active DirectSound3D HW.
      — Fixed reverb sound for "Gothic 1".
      — To each sound that uses reverb individual parameters are applied, now sounds using this effect sound as close as possible to the original, due to the implementation of mathematical logic.
      — Added an option to adjust the reverb sound (option ReverbVolume in SystemPack.ini).
      — The default value for the volume reverberation multiplier has been changed from 1.0 to 3.0.

    VIRTUAL FILE SYSTEM:
    • VDFS32G.dll
      — The library code is written from scratch. The code has been optimized as much as possible.
      — Library VDFS32G.dll is fully adapted and compatible with the following games: "Gothic 1", "Gothic 2", "Gothic 2: Night of the Raven" and any mods based on them.
      — Removed all possible blocks and artificial limitations that were present in previous versions of the library.
      — At startup of the game and the initialization of the VDF system, the file VDFS.dmp is no longer used, instead each time an equivalent will be rebuilt (in memory).
      Fixed functionality of vdf_searchfile:
      — Fixed a problem with the partial logical search for full file names, which prevented the reproduction of dying sounds for the nameless hero.
      — Fixed bug where the wrong sound effect is selected from the folder SPEECH if it exists in the folder SFX.
      This version of the VDF library still loads all the old indices from the VDF, but by optimizing the process makes this much faster and in fact real time.
    • Known limitations of VDFS:
      — File size maximum 4GB (FS restriction).
      — Length of the name: file name (not file path!) can have a maximum of 64 characters (63 + 1 backslash), i.e., in "..\_work\Data\", "_work" and "Data" can have a maximum of 63 characters. The whole file path however is not limited in characters.
    • Quick performance test (using a SSD):
      — Startup: 0.523756 sec vs. 15.948714 sec in the original.
      — Opening a file: 0.000030 sec vs. 0.000073 sec in the original.
      — Check for the existence of a file: 0.000004 sec vs. 0.000034 sec in the original.
      — Search for files by name: 0.000006 sec vs. 0.000216 sec in the original.
      Hence the loading time of "Gothic 1" has decreased by a considerable margin. With the original library Vdfs32g.dll it took ~5-6 seconds to load a save, with mod-fix ~20-22 seconds, and now it takes only ~1-1.5 seconds, even with mod-fix...

    EXECUTABLE:
    • GOTHIC.exe:
      — Fixed problems with low FPS and display of the frame in full-screen mode for Windows 8 and 8.1. On these operating systems "DisableMaxWindowedMode" is by default enabled for all DirectX 5-7 applications. Because of this, the full-screen mode did not work properly; instead the frame hides the health bar of NPCs and causes a low framerate of ~30 fps:

      — Using the parameter "SetAppCompatData" disables "DisableMaxWindowedMode" so that the frame does not appear and the framerate is unaffected.
      — Disabled FPS limit for "Gothic 1", whenever you pressed any key the framrate dropped to ~24 fps.
      — Fixed test mode, after pressing F8 to enter Marvin mode you can now "fly" in each direction, not just to the north as before.
      — Fixed inability to activate a switch in the Sleeper's Temple, which appeared after turning off the FPS limit, which made it impossible to activate. The function responsible for activating the switches has been fixed, so now the switch works. In case of problems with other switches, this fix can be turned off in the following file (SystemPack.ini option MoverBugfix).
      — Added a check and auto-patching solution for the executable file of "Gothic 2" with the Game_InitEngIntl function in the GOTHIC.DAT file.
      — Changed function keys of Gothic 1" for easier navigation of the game menus and inventory. Added the ability to set the speed of the auto-repeat keys and slightly increased its delay, configurable through file (SystemPack.ini options keyDelayRate and keyDelayFirst).
      — Partially changed keyboard layout of "Gothic 1"; by default the game uses the German keyboard layout which is inconvenient for people who use other keyboard layouts when using the console. You can switch the layout in the file (SystemPack.ini option USInternationalKeyboardLayout).
      — For a more responsive mouse control, the game "Gothic 1" was enhanced by the option "Variable speed rotation model" from "Gothic 2" (in which this option is available in Gothic.ini), in the "System package" it can configured in the file (SystemPack.ini option zMouseRotationScale).
      — Disabled separate thread for the game's resource manager which he was running by default. This thread was sometimes prioritized before everything else, causing the game to freeze.
      — Disabled the loading of the cache when "Gothic 1" has been minimized. When you now minimize the game, it no longer crashes with an error:

      — Increased the minimum value of the texture cache of the game (for all operating systems), this avoids flickering of some textures and increases stability of the game. The parameter can be adjusted in the file (Gothic.ini option zTexCacheSizeMaxBytes).
      — Fixed problems with rendering radial fog which caused a sort of "jerk and pull" movement of the camera. Moreover, on Windows 8.1 more significant bugs appeared in the form of graphical glitches (disappearance of textures) on NVIDIA cards. The problem of the "jerky" camera appears in some parts of the game world and with the newer version of the driver (290.53) some objects' textures are partially absent/missing:

      For Nvidia cards the flag WRITEONLY has now been deleted by default when creating the vertex buffer, this solves the problem of the "jerky" camera and missing textures. You can enable or disable the flag WRITEONLY via file (SystemPack.ini option Disable_D3DVBCAPS_WRITEONLY).
      — Due to some texture glitches, the setting Disable_D3DVBCAPS_WRITEONLY in the file SystemPack.ini is now enabled for "Gothic 1".
      — Now when you run the game on any OS, the screen resolution uses 32-bit color instead of the previous 16-bit. This is necessary to ensure correct video playback (fixing a bug in the Binkw32.dll library) and it solves the problem with running the game on Windows 8.1, which does not a 16-bit color configuration (Gothic.ini option zVidResFullscreenBPP).
      — To prevent this error: "SmartHeap Library. MEM_BAD_POINTER" from happening, the library has been updated to version 10.00.45; the error however has not been fully fixed and even the updated version does not guarantee its absence. Thankfully this error does not occur too often and if, merely after the game and only in "Gothic 1".
      — Implemented support of GothicMod.exe with the patch GothicFps-108 by NicoDE.
      — Restored operability of quick save/load in "Gothic 1" only for GothicMod.exe (option QuickSaveEnable in SystemPack.ini).
      — Fixed a bug concerning compiling font files for the game (only for the "Gothic 1" version by 1C-Snowball), due to which text of notes and books was missing.
      — Fix which prevents disabling active NumLock when starting "Gothic 1" (option NumLockDisable in SystemPack.ini).
      — Fixed error in the musical theme of Xardas' tower for "Gothic 2" and "Gothic 2: Night of the Raven." Now it plays on Windows 8.0 and OS 8.1 without any unwanted sounds.
      — Fixed error concerning the functionality of movers and disappearing vobs, sometimes when activated, sometimes on their own.
      — Fixed error concerning the disappearance of the torch in "Gothic 1" (option TorchFix in SystemPack.ini).
      — Fixed error concerning the disappearance of the PFX-fire effects of the flames in "Gothic 1" (option PFXfix in SystemPack.ini).
      — Implemented option to control how the barrier in "Gothic 1" works (option ShowBarrier in SystemPack.ini).
    • GOTHIC.ini:
      Automatic patching:
      Warning: Any change of the values for all these parameters happens only while running the game, after leaving it, all settings will be returned to their original state!

    • SHW32.dll:
      — To prevent this error: "SmartHeap Library. MEM_BAD_POINTER" from happening, the library has been updated to version 10.00.45; the error however has not been fully fixed and even the updated version does not guarantee its absence. Thankfully this error does not occur too often and if, merely after the game and only in "Gothic 1".
    • GameUX and the rundll32 process:
      In Windows 7, the system uses GameUX for "Gothic 1" and "Gothic 2" to add them to the game browser:

      What this means is that when you first start the game it will be added to the browser for which the system attempts to download a display picture from the internet. And if there is no internet, or the process rundll32.exe is blocked by antivirus software or a firewall, the game simply does not start.
      — Drastic steps have been taking to address this problem. In the file responsible for this, AcGenral.dll, the function rundll32.exe has been shut down, so that this process does not interfere with the launch of a game, (option FixGameUX in SystemPack.ini).

    OTHER:
    • Used files:
      — When installing the system package in the game's directory "..\system" it forcibly removes the files MssDS3D.m3d.exe and D3dim700.dll, and in the root directory of the game it deletes all *.dmp files.
      — When you install / uninstall the system package in the game's directory: "..\system" it creates backups / restores the files Vdfs32e.dll, Vdfs32e.exe, Vdfs32g.dll, Vdfs32g.exe and Shw32.dll.
      — All the files of the virtual system are no longer used by the game after installing the "system package", regardless of the version and localization of the original game.
      — Fixed problem with running the games if the latest Logitech SetPoint driver were installed, because of which the game appeared in the processes showing no activity at all. The reason was a bug in the SetPoint driver, which prevented a Windows function from working, which is used by every "Gothic" game. Fixed by replacing the obsolete function call with its modern counterpart.
    • Steam fixes:
      — Library not being able to use another directory of the game instead of "..\Gothic II\System"; now "Gothic 2: Gold" should run without any hassle on Steam.
      — Implemented fix for SteamOverlay; it is now blocked in both versions of the game, statistics works however (requires testing).


    New features and abilities (ModKit)

    SPLASH SCREEN:
    • SPLASH.bmp
      Implemented automatic patching of the splash screen for all supported game versions and the mods based on them.
      — Support for reading/loading of volumes MOD/VDF (compressed file); from the directory: "..\System\Splash.bmp" (unpacked) file.
      Method of reading/loading:
      Always checks the first MOD/VDF files if the directories of the game have multiple virtual volumes containing the splash screen, then goes on to sort by "date of creation" (as in the original) and eventually selects the newest one. If a mod/vdf file splash-screen is not found, it checks the directory of the game: "..\System". If it did not find there anything as well, the standard one will be loaded from the resources of the exe-file of the game.
      Properties of the file:
      "Splash" is an unchangeable file name, *.bmp its format, 24-bit color, 500x200 pixels in size.
      Case sensitivity:
      If packaged in a MOD/VDF volume, then it is UPPERCASE; if it is unpacked in the directory: "..\System", then both upper and lower case (case sensitive).

    ENGINE:
    • LOD:
      In order to optimize the processing load to display geometry, the game engine switches between levels of detail (LOD) – parameters which affect the visual display of models in the game.

      In the screenshots 1 and 2 you can see how the NPC model loses polygons if the camera is farther away, while in the third screenshot LOD is disabled.
      — Added option to disable LOD applied to static and dynamic models (in game); the option to which is in the file (SystemPack.ini option DisableLOD).
    • Tessellation (CPU):
      Activation of dynamically loadable progressive *.3ds model meshes with additional polygons in the model in game:

      When tessellation mode is active, in conjunction with LOD and without it, some test models are displayed incorrectly in game:

      1. If the LOD is active and when the model is near the camera, only the head of the model remains while the body disappears.
      2. If the LOD is inactive, the body is not displayed at all, at any distance from the camera. Similar problems arise with the dragons in the original game, if you get too close, they disappear.
      — Fixed one of the function arguments of zCVertexBufferDyn, which affected the exectuion and start of the game with tessellation mode enabled for animated 3D-models; now the game no longer crashes (option zSubdivSurfacesEnabled in Gothic.ini).
      — Increased value for parameter zPM_NUM_VBUFFER_VERT from 4096 to 65535, which solves the problem of the disappearing models. Now when you activate tessellation and change the parameters of the LOD, nothing disappears.
      Quick performance test (using a SSD):
      With active tessellation and disabled LOD there can be a quite significant drop in performance, but only in scenes with many NPC, since tessellation operates only on models with a skeleton. The more polygons in the scene the greater the load on the CPU will be:
      — LOD on, tessellation off: 174 FPS.
      — LOD off, tessellation off: 160 FPS.
      — LOD on, tessellation on: 160 FPS.
      — LOD off, tessellation on: 109 FPS.
    • Supported exe-files:
      — Implemented the option to set the size of the windows and dialog subtitles (option DialogBoxX, DialogBoxY, SubtitlesBoxX in SystemPack.ini).
      — Implemented the option to display and hide the status bars in the game (options ShowManaBar, ShowSwimBar, HideHealthBar in SystemPack.ini).
    • Class ITEM_SHIELD:
      Fully restored and revived the use of shields in combat (option EnableShields in SystemPack.ini).
      — This shield fix applies only to "Gothic 2: Night of the Raven" (Gothic2.exe) and "Gothic 1" (GothicMod.exe).
      — In the game or mod the shields must be added by modders, who can use the materials from our mod database: SystemPack_mdb.rar.

    3D MODELING:
    • Increased the maximum number of polygons for 3D-models:
      Previously, any 3D model with more than 2048 vertices would not be displayed, now:

    Gothic ½ - SystemPack — das ist ein Updatepacket, welches das Sytem und die ausführbare .exe-Datei von Gothic 2 verändert. Gothic1, Gothic 2 "Classic" sowie Gothic 2 "Die Nacht des Raben" und etwaige Addons/Mods können durch dieses SystemPack problemlos starten.
    Allerdings gilt das nicht für ausnahmslos alle Addons/Mods, sondern nur für die bisher getesteten, die im unteren Abschnitt erwähnt werden.



    Hauptänderungen:
    • Funktionaliät mit WinXP, WinVista, Win7, Win8, WinBlue, Win10 gewährleistet;
    • Unterstützung von Gothic1, Gothic 2 "Classic" und Gothic 2 "Die Nacht des Raben" unter Berücksichtigung aller Änderungen und Korrekturen;
    • ein dynamischer, automatischer Speicher sorgt für das regelmäßige Patchen der Systemdateien für alle unterstützten Versionen;
    • ein Surround-Sound-System "X3DAudio" für alle unterstützten Versionen wurde eingefügt;
    • das Systempack beinhaltet eine eigene .INI für unterstützte Spiel-Versionen, die interne Optionen erweitern, verändern oder sogar hinzufügen.

    Grafische Veränderungen:
    • Unterstützung für sehr hohe Auflösungen;
    • angepasste FOV Hor+
    • sehr hohe Weitsicht, Distanz zu Objekten oder Npc's sehr weit zu erkennen;
    • die Darstellung der Karte wurde überarbeitet;
    • es ist möglich, die LOD (Level of Detail/Detaillierungsgrad von virtuellen Welten) zu deaktivieren;
    • Fehler behoben, der bei aktiviertem Tessalation (Tesselation ist das Zerlegen von Polygonen in kleinere Teile) dafür gesorgt hat, dass Objekte oder Modelle nicht deutlich dargestellt wurden.

    Stabilität im Spiel:
    • minimale Erhöhung des Textur-Speicher;
    • für einen verbesserten Resourcen-Manager wurden ungerade Streams deaktiviert;
    • wird das Spiel minimiert, wird der Speicher nicht entleert (deaktiviert);
    • FPS-Anhebung (frames per second/Bildpunkte pro Sekunde) und verbesserte Vollbildunterstützung bei Windows 8 und 8.1.

    Veränderung in der Videodarstellung:
    • die Skalierung bei der Videowiedergabe wurde vervielfältigt;
    • die Begrenzung für die Videoauflösung wurde aufgehoben.

    Veränderungen im Sound:
    • Unterstützung für Surrondsysteme X3DAudio/XAudio2.

    Virtuelle Dateisystem:
    • Spielstart und Streams werden um einiges schneller geladen.

    Sonstige Änderungen:
    • Startproblem durch rundll32.exe in Windows 7 behoben;
    • Startproblem, ausgelöst durch Logitech SetPoint-Treiber, behoben;
    • Problem der Kameraführung und das Verschwinden von Texturen auf NVIDIA-Grafikkarten behoben;
    • FPS-Grenze (frames per second/Bildpunkte pro Sekunde) aufgehoben;
    • im Marvinmodus bereiten die Funktionen über F8 keine Probleme mehr;
    • das Spiel wird auf 32bit-Farbtiefe gestartet;
    • einige Funktionen haben nun eine automatische Wiederholfunktion;
    • Aktivierung im Schläfertempel ist nun jederzeit möglich, wurde vorher behindert;
    • Möglichkeit hinzugefügt, vom Spiel das Splash-Bildschirm (Ladebildschirm) zu ändern;
    • Teilweise, neue veränderte Tastenbelegung;
    • Erhöhung der max. Polygonen in Modellen;
    • Set Model Geschwindigkeit hinzugefügt.

    Changelog(Short description):
    Spoiler:(zum lesen bitte Text markieren)

    • SystemPack now reads *.patch file, to apply fixes for game *.exe file
    • Updated memory allocator "Shw32.dll" library, for better game stability
    • Added support *.OGG-vorbis sound format


    EXECUTABLES:
    • Overall changes for all games:
      — Fixed 0xc0000005 error at game startup, which happens on systems with Nvidia Optimus technology;
      — Fixed mouse control, when using OS user interface scaling, i.e. 125%; 150% etc.;
      — Fixed possible game freeze ~1-5 seconds, when you open map in the inventory;
      — Disabled assert "D: OBJ: deleting an already deleted zCObject ?!";
      — Added duration control for subtitles;
      — Added borderless fullscreen mode;
      — Added an option to change the size of some interface elements;
      — Added an option to use alternative FOV formula, models doesn't look slightly vertically stretched with it.
    • Changes for Gothic 1
      — Fixed very low FPS in some game areas (Fog Tower undergrounds, Xardas tower);
      — Fixed low FPS in inventory (occur only in russian Russobit-M version);
      — Fixed game crashes with the error "zCollisionDetection";
      — Limit for particles increases from 4096 to 65536, to prevent disappering PFX effects;
      — Orcs can shroud weapon;
      — Killed from the back NPC goes into sDead state, instead of s_WoundedB animation.
      — Quck Save/Load buttons remapped from F9/F10 to F5/F9.
    • Changes for Gothic 2
      — When the hero gets hit, it does not start an endless mouth animation;
      — NPC is no longer equip a bow and crossbow at the same time;
      — Added Polish keyboard support, and some Polish localization features.

    ATTENTION:
    1. Starting with this version G2Returning-SystemPack-1.5.exe file only supports the version of the addon Returning-2.0, for all previously released versions of the add-on (1.0, 1.1 and mods on their basis), use a file: G2NoTR-SystemPack-1.5.exe;
    2. For the version addon Returning-2.0 (build: 0060) This update package is not required, the current version SystemPack it is already included;
    3. For the version addon Returning-2.0 (build: 0056-0060), most of the settings of the file is transferred to SystemPack.ini Gothic.ini file to change the settings directly from the game, be careful!

    Installation:
    1. Delete old version SystemPack uninstaller.
    2. Install new version.
    and start the game..

    Ich habe die Version 1.5 des Odyssee Systempack installiert, doch Gothic startet nicht mehr. Ich habe das Virenprogramm Avast deaktiviert und das Systempack als Admin installiert habe. Auch eine Neuinstallation brachte nichts. Was tun?

    I need some help. First of all I am german so feel free to answer me in german.
    I decided to play Gothic 1 again, installed it, installed the playerkit and the systempack, because the game was running in some kind of weird windowish mode.

    Now the problem occurs that there is lots of flickering when I start the game. It's not like some minor issue, the game is flickering that massive that I can't even see anything once I started to play.

    I tried to reinstall, same problem.
    As I uninstalled just the systempack the game runs fine but in a windowish mode again, though this one appears to be better than the one without the playerkit.

    So... does anyone know how this flickering coulr be fixed, because I'd really wish to play at higher resolution and fps...

    Small note: The "Installation info" section in the first posting is still listing the 1.1 SystemPack files.
    G1/G2 SystemPack - macht die Spiele voll kompatibel zu Win7/8/10 inkl. hoher Auflösungen, Breitbild, Surround-Sound, uvm.!
