I was at the cave where Romanov wants me to get Stealbeard's treasure. After I got it and came out I traded the "Map" for Patty's location and then killed Romanov and his accomplice.

Is this safe to do so? Or did I miss out on any future quests, etc.

I saved it so I will go back and re-play diff. scenarios; but, maybe someone has something else interesting to add about this.

Basically yes. If you let him live, you'll have to find and kill him after you freed Patty. That's all.

Thank you for the quick and apt response. It is greatly appreciated.

Now I seem to have a different problem connected to this quest. After killing Romanov at the beach near Harbour-town I am getting this "voice" that follows me in the area and talks to me. Also I now have this casket in my inventory that I can't open with a warning that says it's a very bad idea! Can you or anyone else shed any light on this?

Greatly perplexed.

What voice that follows you? Can you elaborate a bit more on that? It's a curious thing ... never heard of it.
