Exclamation Contest: Girlfriend for a Gnome
Now we all know Risen like the back of our hand. We found every existing cave with gnomes and robbed all the treasure chests. We found everything - white elephants, valuable scrap and all of the treasures.
But there is something no one found until today: female gnomes!

That's why we call out for all the explorers to find female gnomes until the 15.12.2009. Cook up a story about a possible girlfriend of a gnome or portray them.
Where are they from, how do they look like and why aren't they on Faranga anymore? Do they hide? Or do they just look alike the male versions.

Here you can show off your stories

Here you can show off your pictures

Before you send in your pics or stories you can present your works in this thread to moot them proliteratively. There is more than one contribution per user possible.

You need prices?
There are Gnome figurines, signed books of "The Art of Gothic 3" (German), signed Risen-posters, T-Shirts, writing pads and many more merchandise products.

The contest is open up until the 15.12.2009 at 23:59 o'clock CET.

The submitted works will be judged by our jury afterwards.

Informations:

You need an account on www.worldofrisen.de. You cannot upload your works with your forum account.

The submitted works from the first part of the contest (september-october) are still valid and will also be judged in the end.

Continuing my saga on Gnork and Blargina...

http://www.worldofrisen.de/english/contestentry_274.htm

Quote:
”Over here!”, shouted Bink.

Gnork heard but did not see his friend. The large gathering cavern was filled with gnomes from all over the island, going about their social interactions - trading, gossiping or just meeting with friends. It was a place of feast and solitude, a mix too important for the average gnome to ignore. Gnork, however, had not want to come this evening but Bink had insisted.

At the other side of the throng, Gnork saw his friend standing beside a table, waving his short arm. Sighing, Gnork walked up to him with a sort of anxious curiosity, wondering what all the fuzz was about which had forced him there. Bink just grinned as Gnork took his place next to him and they both sat down.

”Bink”, he greeted. ”So I'm here. Now will you tell me what's the big deal?”
”Not WHAT but WHERE, my friend. And it's over THERE” said Bink with a smile, pointing in in a direction behind Gnork.

Gnork turned around, gazing where Bink had pointed. And there, at the other side of the throng, he saw her. A pair of big, beautiful, intelligent brown eyes: A large and perfectly bulky nose; Pale, creamy skin; Figure so proportional it made Gnork go mad with attraction. There she was just this moment, the love of his life since they had both been little gnomers. He looked at Bink with a frozen expression of panic. Bink looked back, knocked him on the shoulder.

”Just go. You can thank me later.”

Heda leaned forward, whispering.

”There he is!”

Blargina gleaned at where Heda was looking, saw Bink sitting by a table with a friend at the other side of the cavern. The two of them were looking right back at the two ladies and Heda quickly turned her head away, blushing.

”You are so childish,” Blargina said.

Heda giggled at the accusation but Blargina seemed quite serious. She had always been a loner herself; always been afraid of letting someone close to her. Heda, on the other hand, was a real boy-magnet.

”What 'bout Gnork, ' Gina? He's kind of cute as well. Besides, he's always looking at you. He's doing it right now!”
”I know, I know..” muttered Blargina.

She had never given Gnork any attention although it was obvious he had emotions for her. He was simply too quiet. Gnome women normally went for the shouty ones, like Bink. In spite of this, Blargina knew she shouldn't be so closed up. An increasing number of humans arriving at the island had become a growing threat which underlined the fact that she and Heda was at their right ages of settling down, raise a family.

Heda wore jewelry in her ears along with a fashionable leather hat and a brown, patterned dress. Blargina sighed, feeling poor and unattractive in comparance. She took a sip out of her jug of rice wine, thinking she would wait this evening out – Heda would walk over to Bink and Blargina herself would either be left behind or forced to go home. That's how it works.

She turned around and was surprised to find Gnork standing nervously in front of her:

”Hello”, he said.
And here is my earlier contribution

http://www.worldofrisen.de/english/contestentry_252.htm

Quote:
- "You are late!" accused Blargina, piercing Gnork with her unforgiving eyes.

Gnork entered the dimly lit cavern which was their home, sighing at the unwelcoming greeting of his wife. It had been a rough day although he and his friends had not made any profit from their work; Raiding merchants was not as easy now as it had been before the underground temples. Security had tightened and humans seldom travelled alone anymore - often with the company of well-equipped, well-experienced bodyguards.

- "I'm not late," Gnork mumbled in objection.

He sat down on a stool at the table, tired and hungry. Dinner had already been served and on the table stood a bowl of potatoes, some stew and a jug filled with water. It was a sparse diet but times were tough and neither of them could really afford anything better. Gnork began to fill his plate with the food with one hand, picking his nose with the other one, while Blargina stood beside watching him in a judgemental way.

- "You are late and the food is cold!" she squealed.
- "I'm not late. You cooked dinner too early! And the food is just fine."
- "Fine!" she repeated sarcastically.

She began going through his bags, checking for what prize her husband might have brought home. But it was empty. Thoroughly enjoying the first big meal of the day, Gnork was not interested in arguing with her. It had been like this for months, the two of them always ending up in fights over trifles like this. Tension was greater than ever. It all was connected to what was currently happening on the island.

- "What's this?" she asked, holding up his empty bag.
- "No loot today," he responded. "Too dangerous."
- "Why, you thought it would be easy, gnomes going up against humans? They're both smarter and stronger than us, you know. You think you can just sit on your ass all day, expecting them to just hand over their inventory to you? Well, DO you?"

He dropped his fork and looked at her, annoyed and suddenly gloomy. He very well knew their situation, and was reminded of it every time he went up in the morning to join his friends for their daily raids. She did not need to bring it up, causing fights like this every single day! But then, as he looked at her - that soft and bulky nose, those large and aggrivated eyes, her fast and round shape - he was reminded of how lucky he was having her by his side at these times.

He left the table, stepped up to her, grabbed her by her arms, and then embraced her tightly.

- "G-Gnork!" she panted, surprised by this unusual behaviour.
- " 'Gina", he said, "I love you so much."
If time allows, I might even make it a trilogy.

Yes, the last submission would be as straight-faced as the previous ones.

My last and finishing entry about Gnork and Blargina

http://www.worldofrisen.de/english/contestentry_276.htm

Quote:
They rushed through the cave, panting. It was a new type of fear, a sensation of having everything torn down in an instant – their home, friends, lives; What would be left would only be remains of that reality, never the same and irreparable. They could only hope to save themselves.

Behind them roared the low pitched sounds of human voices, wood breaking against metal, the crackling of burning fires and aggitated screams of gnomes. The humans had streamed into the great gathering cavern, swords slashing in a frenzy, advancing like furious giants. Surprised gnomes trying desperately to hold their ground had been no match for them.

Gnork and Blargina held hands as they ran breathlessly along the dark stone walls. They had chosen a different escape route than some of the rest of the gnome families, hoping to have drawn less attention. Why had the humans attacked - wasn't the war over with? No time for answers; Only time for running. Further ahead they could see the hole which was their exit, moonlight shining in at the stone floor.

- ”We'll be safe soon,” gasped Gnork while they ran.

They hurried through the opening and then, after having laid some distance behind them, saught cover under the roots of a large tree. For the moment, they were safe. Gnork looked at Blargina and noticed she was crying. He took his arm around her but remained silent. It was a dark and cold night, the jungle only visible by a thin layer of blue moonlight.

- ”I'm so frightened” whispered Blargina.

Gnork stroke her hair behind her ears, looked into those large, brown eyes. He could not promise her that they would be safe through the night, because he did not know what was going on back there. Maybe they were all dead. Maybe they had escaped like him and Blargina.

Blargina felt embarassed for showing herself this sensitive, otherwise being so selfconfident and on her feet. It was different now: She was confused, scared and angry at the same time, and on top of that she felt like she had no control of what was going on. She clutched to Gnork, thanking the earth he was with her at this hour. He responded by holding her tighter.

They spent the night there, alert although tired and fatigued. When dawn came they had heard no sounds of neither humans nor other gnomes and was beginning to feel like they could finally leave their hiding place.

- ”Wait here, I'll have a look before we go,” Gnork said.

She was watching him as he cautiously stuck her head above the roots and looked around. He hoisted himself out of their hiding place, disappearing from her sight. Blargina heard his feet wander for a few seconds and then something like a 'thump' after which everything became silent.

- ”Gnork!” she shouted!

Panicking she sprang out of the hole only to see Gnork lying on the ground with an arrow pierced through his head. Looking up she saw stood three humans at a distance, of which one had just prepared his bow for a second shot. Another arrow struck her right in her chest, killing her instantly.

You know what they say about running in contests: You don't do it because winning is fun, you do it because watching everyone else lose is.

Bam! Just joking. I'm very happy for getting a gnome. Anyways, I already have the signed Gothic III artbook after winning another contest. I'm glad you got one as well!

It's an artbook with a lot of text - in german. It feels kind of silly just looking at the pictures (and autographs). I think the book should have been translated for english. But, hey, it's still cool to have. And it's hardcover with a size of perhaps 30x20cm

Yes, Ralf put a lot of effort into that book. He explains things and tells little anecdotes from what I've heard (don't have it myself). It's definitely more than your average artbook with just some artworks unlovingly thrown together.

The commercial success of the book was not very convincing, even on the german market where PB has a home advantage. I think this is part of the reason why there's no such "Art of RISEN" book anymore. And for the same reason, no publisher wanted to make a translation.

And an excellent opportunity to polish your german.

@doc: does it have Ralf's autograph? I hope mine will too, I don't know for sure since Ralf is not working with them at this time.

Yes, and I would have loved to read it all. Fortunately, I already own the Gothic III Collector's Edition which includes a sized-down copy of the same book, in english (although softcover). I don't think I will ever attempt learning the german language so I'll just be happy to simply own the book for fanboyism's sake.

Mine does and I suppose your does too. After all, he worked on Gothic III. Even so, I think these books were signed quite some time ago, probably long before Ralf quit the team.

Congrats to Doc and Maladiq. Also those guys from the picture contest have made some great images.
It was quite a surprise for me, as I thought only one of us will win. Can't wait to get those posters

I'm glad that in the end I've been surpassed by only 2 and beaten all others.
3th out of 3... my lucky number
