"Insufficient Memory" Installation Problem
Hi there
I've been having a problem installing Gothic 2 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The dreaded "Insufficient Memory" error. I have searched the forum, and Google, and as I understand it this is not a memory error, but rather a compatibility error. Downgrading to Windows XP is not an option for me, and neither is dual booting unfortunately.
Posting and asking for help is my last resort, as I have searched high and low for a solution.
So, here are the things I have tried thus far and the issues I have encountered:
1) Using the batch file to install the game. This encounters an error simply stating "an error has occurred". I have copied the CD to my harddrive and re-tried, with the same issue.
2) Installing the game in safe mode. This caused a Windows error report to show when I double clicked the setup executable. I have tried safe mode with different driver options, no success.
3) Attempting to install in "XP Mode" (virtual machine). No success, more errors.
4) Extracting the files with Universal Extractor. I managed to extract the files from the cab file off the first CD, and the result was 33 files with an .EWI extension. CD2 would not allow me to extract (the archive type, .w02, was not recognized by Universal Extractor. Any help on using this method successfully would be appreciated, as it seems to be the only one where I have managed to get somewhere.)
As I have said before, I doubt it is an error related to system specs, but here are my PC specs anyway:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
2GB RAM
XFX Geforce 9600
30+ GB harddrive Space
2.66ghz core 2 duo Chip
Intel DP35DP mainboard
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.
Update: Strangely enough, I have managed to make some progress. When running the installer through command prompt, it throws up a new error: math64.dll not found. I've done some reading up and I'm going to try and repeat these steps through safe mode. I will let you know what happens.

The math 64 dll issue is due to Jowood's marvelous install software. Try posting on their forums for the solution, I don't think it's ever been answered though.

So there is no solution? I had a look at the JoWood forums and it looks like there's not much activity on their boards. Safe mode, which I read would "fix" it, just resulted in an illegal operation when I tried to run the setup exe. Strange that I can get into the setup program when Windows is running normally, and not in safe mode.

Sorry mate, I've never heard of one. Perhaps try the .bat setup in safe-mode? With DEP/UAC disabled and all that good stuff. Try combinations of the stuff you did before. Yes, this suggestion is really grabbing at straws, but the issue is one that's "unknown" (it's a problem many have been having, but nobody at Jowood seems to care enough).

In that case, I'll let you know if I do manage to find a solution so people can refer to the thread if they get stuck in the same way.
Edit to say thanks for the help

I don't know if you could possibly help me here? I have managed to extract all the files extracted during installation. Unfortunately, they are not sorted into folders. Is there any way I could find out what goes where? There is a massive amount of files.
Edit: Through running the bugged original install, I managed to create a set of folders. I assume these are the correct folder trees (I hope they are):
In my Gothic 2 folder I have:
_work
Data
Miles
Saves
System
in the _Work folder I have another Data folder, leading to:
Anims
Meshes
Music
Presets
Scripts
Textures
Videos
Some of these folders contain other folders, but I'm sure you get the gist of it and know if it's correct or not. I'm now trying to figure out which file types go into which folders. I've assumed so far that dll files go into Gothic II\system, bik files go into Gothic II\_work\Data\video and that's about it Any help would be appreciated, I know it's a lot to ask, thanks in advance.
Not to worry, found where everything goes by editing the setup batch file. Will you let you know if it works

How did you managed to extract the files? With the /x <path> command line for the setup.exe?
You managed to extract all the files, even the ones from the .w0* files?
Maybe a batch file can be created, to extract the fileS, create the folders, move the files there, etc.

Using Universal Extractor (http://legroom.net/software/uniextract)
Originally the w02 and w03 files gave me issues, until I selected the cab file on CD1 with UE, and selected the option of extracting it using the WISE Installation Package option. This essentially mimicked the install process, as it opened the installer and "installed" the files. In this way, the extractor was able to detect the 2nd and 3rd disc were needed, and the "installer" prompted me for them. It also extracted the actual game files as opposed to the odd file format I encountered earlier. Still trying to get the game running, the file sorting is tedious. I'm sure that it would be possible to create a batch file to do this - a slight modification of the setup batch file would do as it has that function in it already. But sadly I have no idea how
Edit to say that the option I selected was "Wise installer /x switch". I assume this uses the same command you mentioned, so it would most likely be possible to create one batch file to do everything.

I gave a bit of info on the directory structure here. It's more usable for modders, so idk how much help it'll be for you. But it's something. If you get it to work, let us know how you did it, we'll post the solutions here.

Yes, basically, with the switch uniextract tells the WISE installer to extract the files to a folder, without asking all that stuff about where to install, create registry keys, make desktop shortcuts and other nice stuff an installer does.
That weird file format .ewi I think the files were correctly extracted, but that extractor didn't know how to rename the files.
I'm investigating right now the possibility of an batch alternative (it means some experimenting).
EDIT: I couldn't find a switch for the wise installer to also make the right paths for files, but I found a nice little freeware that does that just fine.
Edit2: could someone help me and post the contents of their G2 dvd? Open a command prompt (start, run, cmd), enter the letter of the optical drive, there run this command: dir /s /og > c:\listy.txt
then paste here the contents of listy.txt.
Not sure in how many flavors comes the G2 dvd, from the gold edition, the universe edition, etc.

OK, I will do, the game opens, but I appear to be missing a few files... I think my CDs are a bit old. So I've created ISOs of the problem CDs. I'll give you a list of everything you need as I extract the CDs.

Ahhhhhh....... my CD 2 is corrupt. As a result, I have files missing or corrupt. I'm 80% sure this is a workable fix for the insufficient memory and math64.dll error. The game opens and then crashes out on a corrupt file (Visualfx.dat). Now I really have to accept that it isn't going to work for me

Success! The game runs
Thanks for all the help, possibly we have found a solution to this problem for anyone who has it (most people on Vista or Windows 7 from what I can gather).
Thanks a lot
