Hey. I love action-rpgs, and therefore tried out the Gothic 2 demo. I know that I shouldn't judge the game from just playing the beginning. The one thing I found quite disturbing was the combat. I didn't like the controls/feeling of it. Just wondering if I should buy the game, and give it a chance, or if I wont like it. It just felt that I pressed forward + mouseclick all the time.

Thank you :)

I myself am rather new to the world of Gothic but haveing just completed Gothic2 I would highly recommend it. The control does take some time to get used to but the games offers so many hours of adventure that even 1 or 2 spent mastering the control scheme is well worth the effort.

Later after you have become better at combat the controlls actually offer a great advantage over many RPG games as the combat is more realistic you can parry, block, string combo moves etc. And nothing humanoid is easy to kill.

PS. While holding down the left mouse button try left then right then forward (watch your weapon to get the timing down) for an easy beginner combo so you can see what the combat is all about.

Gothic 2 is on one level with Morrowind and KotOR. Which one the player prefers is only a matter of taste. So yes, itīs one of the 3 best RPGs released in the last few years - but itīs not mainstream. Thereīs a certain chance youīll hate it. And itīs an RPG with approximately 60-70% action - less in the beginning, more in the 2nd half of the game - but itīs no hack & slash game.

It just felt that I pressed forward + mouseclick all the time.
Itīs "mouseclick + 1 directional key". ;) First the LMB, then 1 of 4 choices. Later you get combo attacks and the higher stats will make sword handling more fluid. Your character is in newbie mode in the beginning.
If this didnīt sound familiar you should try the other combat system. It can be enabled somewhere in the options.

Most people say they got used to the combat system and actually liked it when they were over the initial shock.

You can enable "pure" mouse-controls in the options if you disable the "Gothic1-Controls"...
But I would recommend you to try to get used to the "normal" controls, īcause if you once got used to them, you wouldnīt want to play without...
I needed a few hors to understand them but later on I even bet an orc with a normal club... The controls allow you to do whatever you want... Itīs more or less like in MW, but I like it more...
Just a matter of taste...

Not if the person doesn't like the controls. Gothic 1 has worse controls then number two. When you had to pick up sth, one had to push the action button and press forward to get it. In number two, one can just press the action button.

Yes that`s right! In the begining it is quite hard to get use to them, but if U have played Gothic I then G2 controls are peace of cake and U realy love them, because they are beter! :D

But one thing is sertain! If the only problem are controls, then U should get the game wright awai, but of curse, it WOULD be beter to play Gothic I before Gothic II. :D

Thank you for all your responses :). I'll give Gothic 2 a try. BTW I have one question... I find the game really hard now that I killed everything easy between Xardas tower and the Khorinis city like young wolfs etc. I'm just lvl 1 and don't quite know what to do right now. I lose like 50-90% of my life against wolves, and always get killed against two of them.

U can be happy that u don't have the addon. There the beginning is very very very hard^^.

(PS: If u choose a Gothic forum to give u a hint to buy a game u made the decision to buy it before u created the thread)

Hehe Thank You. It's without a doubt the best game-forum I've been to :). I'm very impressed by the city of Khorinis, it feels very alive , even though it's not of a very great size. I think I will become a Paladin, and will try to find some easier quests to do to gain some experience.

Man, now you know that you can change your controls in standard mode.

And the game story is great. It's real that game have a few bugs, but in that world nothing can be perfect. I want you to buy that game, because from all like Morrowind, KOTOR, games that now i play, my favourite game remain gothic 2 (for me with notr now, i'm verry happy).

So Gothic 2 is the best game you can play, and buy.

I hope you understand me !!!

@vane505

By the way! If U want to gain expiriance then after some levels U can go to woods and hunt some animals! But in the begining only scavangers, rats and molaters! :D So good luck! ;)

Godcrusher
16.05.2005, 22:22
If you want expiriance try to acomplish as many quests as you can. The longer nad harder the quest is, the more expiriance do you get ;) :D

Zaratul
16.05.2005, 22:24
But later U will gain more expireace during the quests not for the quests! :D

Right Godcrusher!?!?

vane505 you should buy it and play it. You will see that it is the best RPG ever made.

And BTW: You can get exp. points without fighting when you do some quests in Khorinis, raise you hero there and THEN go back to the beasts they attacked and maybe killed you, then you can show them whoīs the boss http://people.freenet.de/WernerTWC/s/aufmaul.gif

Edit: I strongly recommend to play and buy Gothic 1 first, the Story is an essential part of the game, played in right order makes sense and more playfun (like speekings in g2, you donīt understand if you donīt play the first part,... you meet old frinds in G2, known from G1... things like that)
For me, itīs the best Game (Gothic is ONE game for me, all parts)...
BUY IT!!!! Itīs the best game buy, I ever made !!!

@WernerTWC

As U said it`s nuch better to play Gothic 1 the first! Because U don`t have to say thouse sily txt in Gothic 2 when meet old friends (from Gothic 1) like: "hmm...do I know You?" or "You remember Lee right?" - "No."

hmm regarding the difficulty level of gothic.

i always found it conveniently challenging, but it wasn't before watching one of my friends (a standard "occasional" player) that i realized how deterring this game must be for any unexpecting new player. if you are not used to similar games, chances are high that people will just ditch the game even before succesfully making their way to khorinis.

rekinu
30.09.2005, 22:25
ohohohoho, did you played G1 ? :D :D :D If you play it for the first time you will ditch it after 5 minutes of play...you have to play more patiently.about the hard level of the game, I think that the backgrounds and the npcs makes you play more and more (G2) .

Shiver
30.09.2005, 23:15
gothic1 was my very first roleplay game of its kind. i've always disliked them for their linear worlds and game concenpts behind a thin surface, but instead of ditching it after your 5 minutes, the game already had me at this moment. :p

didn't care about not being able to control my character as long as i could just walk him down into this wide valley - no flat diablo-surfaces, no game restrictions preventing you from stumbling down into the abyss, just an open land in front of you... :)
